An Experimental Automatic communication system for Air traffic control

The “Experimental Automatic Ground/Air/Ground communication system (AGACS)” under development for the Bureau of Research and Development, Federal Aviation Agency, will provide a two-way traffic control data link permitting automatic mechanized communication for essential routine flight information between the air and ground environments. The system selected is operable in both VHF and UHF aircraft communication bands and permits choice of FSK-carrier or FSK-AM modulation. Up to 500 aircraft may be interrogated and reply on a single channel in a time period of two minutes or less. Information is binary coded and transmitted by time-division multiplex techniques at a data rate of 750 bits per second. Copyright © 1959, by The Institute of Radio Engineers, Inc.

Railway traffic control requires dedicated point-to-point and point-to-multipoint circuits for communication over larger number of signal points spread along the track. A typical despatcher control section spreads over 200 kms with 30 to 40 signal points. Until the mid 1980s, such communication were economically provided by copper quad cable in electrified territory. Development in optical fibre technology has changed the scenario and fibre finds increasing use in railway telecommunication networks due to its distinctive advantages. However some of the railways requirements are too specialized. These include omnibus circuits with large number of tappings, closely spaced repeaters, lineside emergency communication requirement, transmission of safety information and the ability to provide on demand service. The technology of optical fibre therefore requires adoptions to meet these specialized requirements. In this paper, the authors describe an optical fibre based railway communication system used by Indian Railways and conclude that even though large number of repeaters are used in the link, the performance quality is satisfactory and optical fibre based communications are economical in the railway environment. Reliability of the link can be improved through additional fibres or through alternate media. A hybrid solution based on optical fibre and copper cable is proposed to achieve economy without sacrificing quality and reliability.

This work shows the experiment results about the study of radio wave propagation at 5.8 [GHz], under the free line of sight propagation used for air traffic control - ATC communication system as a challenge to discover about the real feasibility of using this C band for air traffic control. The most important results are the evaluation of Rice K factor, and the practical solution to increase the received signal power at the area around the airport by using aluminum reflecting boards putted surround the transmitting antenna. In additional, based on such experimental results, another work was also done. This is the study of OFDMA scheme (orthogonal frequency division multiple access) in both current conventional VHF band and evaluated C band to establish a new wide-band radio communication system that can satisfy the new requirement of air traffic density/airline use in the future.

During the last few years light-weight approaches to formal development methods have been proposed in order to facilitate the technological transfer of formal methods. "Light-weight" means that a precise and unambiguous formal specification language is used in order to raise the quality of a system's description, without focusing on proofs (C.B. Jones, 1996). The article presents the results and experiences gained in an industrial project where VDM++, an object oriented extension of the Vienna Development Method, has been applied in such a light-weight manner. In the joint project of the Austrian company Frequentis and the Technical University Graz (J. Horl, 1999), a safety critical voice communication system (VCS) for air-traffic control has been specified and validated. It serves as the sole communication system between the pilots, the air-traffic control personnel at the tower, the ground personnel on the runways, other parties external to the airport and even other airports.

In Japan, urban traffic congestion is chronic, and drivers want traffic and route information. The Police Agency proposed the UTMS (universal traffic management system) concept and developed a roadside infrared beacon for two-way communication between roads and vehicles. Then, they started the operation of the VICS (vehicle information and communication system) as part of the ITS (intelligent transport system) and realized the dynamic traffic information providing service to on-vehicle units. The IR beacons detect vehicles and calculate their motions. They can be used for giving priority to public vehicles, for vehicle control and for emergency vehicle support. Especially, for the VICS, that provides traffic information from infrared beacons to vehicle drivers, the number of on-vehicle units responding to infrared beacon has increased to 320,000 in only four years. On the other hand, 24,000 infrared beacons have been installed so far all over the nation, and the number will be intentionally increased. To achieve an advanced traffic control system in the 21/sup st/ century, more in-vehicle units will need to be installed, the number of infrared beacons expanded, and preparations made to qualitatively improve the system. The Agency has made efforts to collect more up-link information from on-vehicle units through the infrared beacons in order to promote improvement of the traffic control system.

This paper introduces a new kind of communication system that is proposed for oceanic air traffic control, especially works under the high air traffic conditions. The aircraft position reports are sent to the ground controllers by relaying them via other aircrafts. To do so, multi-hop ad-hoc networks that are based on these aircrafts is proposed to use. In addition, a proper multiple access scheme with optimal values is also proposed that allows the aircrafts to operate autonomously in a valid region. Furthermore, with accurate time obtained from equipped means, the Position aided-autonomous idle timeslot reuse scheme (PA-AITR) is proposed to reuse the idle timeslots caused by the sparse aircraft distributions. And another scheme, that is proposed to improve the connectivity under sparse aircraft distributions; which is aided by interference power in the feedback information (IB-NS). In all, the combined conditions and schemes show the applicability to utilize this system for future air traffic control communications.

Network slicing has emerged as a key network technology, providing network operators with the means to offer virtual networks to vertical users over a single physical network infrastructure. Recent research has resulted mainly in techniques for managing and deploying network slices, but the implementation of network slices on a real physical transport network infrastructure has received much less attention. Standardization bodies, such as the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), have provided some implementation recommendations. Still, there is a lack of mechanisms to implement network slices capable of handling traffic bursts while simultaneously meeting the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the traffic flows associated with the slices. In this paper, we propose a novel fine-grained resource control mechanism to implement transport network slices that meet traffic QoS requirements while both accepting limited traffic bursts, and enabling efficient bandwidth sharing within and across slices. The mechanism is executed at the edge of the transport network. The proposed model aligns with current standards on network slicing and has been tested on an experimental platform. Using this platform, we have conducted an extensive experimental campaign that demonstrates that our proposal can effectively control traffic bursts generated within the network slices while maximizing bandwidth utilization across the network.

A new road vehicle communication (RVC) system that provides continuous communication between vehicles and control centers using a leaky coaxial cable is presented. The system operates in the quasi-microwave band providing high-quality communication through a well-designed communication protocol. An experimental setup and future directions are also included in this article.

When designing the call admission control algorithm for multi-traffic mobile communication system, two priorities must be taken into account: one is the priority between the traffics; other is the priority for handoff call. In this paper, an analytical model, a two-dimension Markov chain is proposed to investigate the performance of the call admission control scheme, which is based on guard channel strategy and movable boundary algorithm. The performance of new call blocking probability, handoff call blocking probability, data packet loss probability and mean delay of data packet can be obtained from the proposed model. This paper also provides an easier-to-compute approximate method for the proposed model. Numerical results show that the two priorities are guaranteed and the result of the provided approximate method is close to the true result.

This paper presents a scalable control system for synchronized control of complex multi-axis non-linear machines utilizing a communication network based on the IEEE I394b high-speed serial bus standard. The system introduces a unique clustered architecture which allows for a high level of centralization of control algorithms in clusters of remote controllers in selected areas while promoting distribution of control algorithms running on substantially autonomous controllers in other areas. As a result, high performance control can be achieved where necessary without burdening the entire communication network by a heavy time-critical traffic and impairing the overall scalability of the control system. The distributed nature of the control system opens numerous challenges in the areas of implementation of model-based control, synchronization of individual controllers, and handling of events associated with inputs on multiple controllers. The paper proposes practical solutions to these challenges in the framework of the IEEE 1394b standard.
