McAfee SecurityCenter Firewall is one of the most popular security software installed on millions of Internet connected computers worldwide. ¿McAfee claims that if you have installed McAfee SecurityCentre with anti-virus and anti-spyware and Firewall version 9.3 then you always have the most current security to combat the ever-evolving threats on the Internet for the duration of the subscription¿. In this paper, we present our findings regarding the effectiveness of McAfee SecurityCentre software against one of the most popular distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, namely ping-flood attack on the computer which has McAfee SecurityCentre installed. The McAfee SecurityCentre software has an in built firewall which can be activated to control and filter the inbound/outbound traffic. It can also block the ping requests in order to stop or subside the ping based DDoS Attacks. To test the McAfee Security Centre software, we created the ping traffic in the controlled lab environment of Networking Research Lab here at The University of Texas-Pan American. It was found that the McAfee Firewall software itself was incurring DoS (denial of service) by completely exhausting the available memory resources during its operation of stopping the external ping attack.

Proximity aware mobile service is a wireless application for mobile users to interact with services offered by service providers present in the user's environment. Many issues are still prevalent in this area which includes context modeling, sensors integration, proximity resolution and service management. One important aspect in service management is congestion control which plays a key part in providing proximity aware services in a wireless networking environment. This paper investigates the feasibility of neural network based connection admission controllers by comparing simulated Back-Propagation and Learning Vector Quantization Neural Networks. It is found that the Back-propagation Neural Network has higher performance.

Position messages will be the foundation for many emerging traffic safety applications based on wireless communications. These messages contain information about the vehicle's position, speed, direction, etc. and are broadcasted periodically by each vehicle. The upcoming IEEE 802.11p standard, intended for vehicle ad hoc networks (VANETs) has flaws caused by the unpredictable behavior of its medium access control (MAC) scheme, which imply that traffic safety applications cannot be supported satisfactorily when the network load increases. We study the MAC mechanism within IEEE 802.11p being a carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) algorithm and compare it with a self-organizing time division multiple access (STDMA) scheme when used for broadcasting periodic position messages in a realistic highway scenario. We investigate their scalability in terms of the number of vehicles that the VANET can support using metrics such as channel access delay, probability of concurrent transmissions and interference distance. The results show that STDMA outperforms CSMA of 802.11p even when the network is not saturated.

This paper proposes and studies a differentiated congestion control for Ethernet congestion management. Following the popular approach that uses a cooperation of an Additive Increase and Multiplicative Decrease (AIMD) based rate limiter and Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) active queue management to combat the congestion in Ethernet, the proposal considers differentiated AIMD settings for rate limiters to achieve congestion control differentiation for traffic of different priorities. We illustrate that while the operation of AIMD and ECN are independent, by using different AIMD settings, we can achieve differentiated control of bandwidth utilization. We provide an analysis and its numerical results showing the effectiveness of this method. Our proposed method is also implemented in OMNET++ simulator with results showing the effectiveness of bandwidth ratio differentiation.

According to the importance of loop freeway and the marked interference of the traffic accident of fog loop freeway to traffic flow, based on network, propose the emergency traffic organization in the influence region which includes protection, control and buffer in this paper. Through collecting traffic accident interference data of Xi'an loop freeway, firstly calculate maximum queue length of buffer under the action of the interference and the corresponding moment, resolution time of accident. Secondly, according to the location of every influence area and traffic flow characteristics, give the concrete measures of fog emergency traffic organization of every influence region in order to reduce secondary accidents and provide the basis for playing a role of loop freeway transportation hub.

In this paper a new algorithm based on the centralized algorithm for mutual exclusion in distributed systems is proposed that instead of one coordinator uses two coordinator On separate sites (But every moment One of them as coordinator whole system).In our method, if for any reason main Coordinator crashes, until recovery it, secondary coordinator controls critical section versus Simultaneous accesses of processes and prevents simultaneous accesses to shared resources. Its functionality is like to centralized algorithm; processes send your request for entrance to critical section first to main coordinator and if it has been crashed, send your request to secondary coordinator. Unlike the centralized algorithm in proposed algorithm coordinator is not a point of failure and with crashing coordinator, entire system doesn't go down. The proposed algorithm against the failure of coordinator is much flexible.

To handle the challenge of increasing node size in wavelength routing networks (WRNs), waveband switching (WBS) is introduced to group multiple wavelengths together as a band or fiber and switch them using a single port whenever possible. Literature studies with the off-line traffic confirm that WBS can effectively reduce the port count and cost as well as control complexity. In the cases with online traffic, both the port reduction and call blocking probability should be considered due to the unknown traffic pattern and limited resources. In this work, we first analyze a reconfigurable switching architecture and the blocking probability in WBS networks. Based on the analysis, we then propose a novel dynamic graph-based waveband assignment algorithm in conjunction with adaptive routing. The proposed algorithm employs the ant optimization techniques to reduce ports and blocking probability in the network with online traffic in a distributed manner. Our simulation results show that our graph-based waveband assignment algorithm combined with the adaptive routing scheme can achieve the best performance when compared to other schemes. Our study also shows that even with limited resources, WBS can achieve port saving and an allowable blocking probability.

This paper considers relay wireless network whose users are noncooperative to transmit the traffic to the gateway. To investigate network performance, the tandem queueing model is developed based on multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system with space-time block code (STBC) transmission in a physical layer. Based on this queueing model, optimal traffic rate control is formulated as the noncooperative game. Three scenarios are considered in this game formulation, i.e., identical-priority, leader-follower, and cooperative rate control. In identical-priority scenario, the users have identical priority to transmit data to the relay nodes. Nash equilibrium is considered as the solution of this scenario. In leader-follower scenario, the users have different priority to transmit data. Stackelberg equilibrium is the solution. In cooperative scenario, the users transmit data according to the total benefit of the network, and optimal rate is the solution which maximize this benefit. With the queueing model and noncooperative game formulation, the behavior of networks can be investigated analytically.

BitTorrent(BT)-like P2P traffic which occupy main network bandwidth affect other normal network applications badly. This paper presents a triggered dynamic mechanism for BT-like P2P bandwidth management. According to the variety of utilization percentage of egress router input/output cache, this mechanism could estimate the potential network congestion and be triggered to control the BT-like P2P bandwidth dynamically. This paper puts forward a new way to control BT-like P2P bandwidth by intercepting the massage packets of BT-like P2P. The experiments results verify that the proposed method for BT-like P2P bandwidth management can manage BT-like P2P bandwidth effectively.

Due to increasing data traffic rates and rollout of advanced radio transmission technologies wireless networks consume increasing amount of energy and contribute a growing fraction to the CO2 emissions of ICT industry. Thus, climate and cost issues now shift the research focus of wireless communications to energy consumption and energy efficiency. Two approaches can be followed: Incremental improvements of existing systems or a clean slate re-design with a fundamental change of paradigms. We describe two such initiatives and discuss their differences. The EC FP7 project EARTH is a 30 month project aiming for a reduction of the overall energy consumption of 4G mobile broadband networks by 50%, regarding network aspects and individual radio components from a holistic point of view. The Green Touch Initiative is a privately financed consortium addressing fundamental research that will pave the way to much higher reductions for future systems in the order of several magnitudes, with first proof of concepts available in 5 years.
