The Brazilian education methodology follows a very traditional pattern in the middle and high school years. Although it is very difficult to measure the degree of study between particular and public schools, the first-year university students face many difficulties between the clash of very different teaching learning methods. This paper presents an analysis of competitive programming, a non-traditional approach based on the Algorithm Problem Solving method, applied to teaching first-year programming classes for the Computer Science course at the University of Brasilia (UnB). The main goal is to analyze if there is any correlation between the different teaching methods applied to this specific subject and an increased proficiency toward abilities that are useful not merely to programming, but also to group related projects in their future, such as proactivity and familiarity towards programming logic. The leading method of data acquiring was utilizing a questionnaire and the analysis by data provided by teachers, which brought an in-depth exploration about a disparity between the student's difficulty towards more advanced subjects when introduced with the two different teaching methods, and an improvement in both student's proactivity and familiarity regarding programming.

Seven years have passed since me and my brother Felix Halim released the 3rd edition of our competitive programming book (CP3) on 24 May 2013 that had influenced the competitive programming field in the past decade: 2010s. We have just released the 4th edition of our book (CP4) on 19 July 2020 - the original IOI 2020 arrival day where free preview copies should have been given to all invited delegations. In this short report, we address two groups of readers: those who have read/heard about CP3 and those who are new with this book. © 2020 IOI, Vilnius University.

Building practical programming competency requires a long-lasting journey of discovery, trial and error, learning and improvement. This article presents essential findings of a case study of a Python programming contest with an automatic judgement system for competitive programming training extending the learning experiences for students in an introductory course, computational thinking and problem-solving. The benefits and challenges are discussed. Due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic, a hybrid model of the contest was adopted, that is, some students participated in the contest on-site, while others participated remotely. To alleviate human effort in judging the submissions, the DOMjudge platform, a web-based automatic judgement system, has been deployed as an online automatic judgement system and contest management in competitive programming. The implementation roadmap and framework were provided. The contest problems and contestants' performances were discussed. Not many junior contestants could solve at least one problem(s), and competitive computing training should be offered if the students are keen on open competitions. An empirical study was conducted to evaluate the student feedback after the contest. Preliminary results revealed that the contest offering the chance to stimulate student learning interests could enhance their independent learning, innovative thinking and problem-solving skills, and could thus lead to the overall benefits of the learning experiences, which further encourage them to participate in future contests to improve their learning and therefore enhance their employability. Employers often treasure student experiences in competitive programming events, like association for computing machinery programming contests, Google Code Jam or Microsoft Imagine Cup. Sharp vision requiring skills to tackle unseen problems within a short period is also instrumental to students planning for graduate school.

competitive programming presents challenges for students seeking to enhance programming and algorithmic skills. This research introduces a system that efficiently matches problem statements to editorials that describe the solution, helping students find relevant learning resources. The main component of this system is our learning-to-rank model, which achieves a P@1 score of 0.93, indicating its proficiency in identifying the most relevant editorial for a specific problem statement. While our model is smaller in scale compared to general models like GPT-4, it distinguishes itself with comparable results and notable computational efficiency. Additionally, we have developed a new dataset of 1550 competitive programming problem statements and their editorials. Integrated into a competitive programming platform, it has the potential to evolve into an adaptive learning system, customizing paths based on individual user performance. In competitive programming, understanding a problem often requires more than just the official solution. Users typically turn to comments in the contest's thread for additional insights. These comments often contain irrelevant information, necessitating the manual identification of relevant ones. This paper introduces CommentThreadFilter, a system designed to classify comments as either Relevant or Irrelevant for the main thread post. Leveraging base models like BERT, RoBERTa, and SciBERT, we evaluate the system's performance on the newly created CFComments dataset. The dataset is the first of its kind, comprising 19 labelled comment threads in the competitive programming domain, manually annotated by two experts, alongside 1131 unlabeled comment threads. The proposed models, combined with a weak augmentation on the text, achieve an F1-score of 86%, outperforming the 77% F1-score obtained using gpt-3.5-turbo. By effectively filtering comments as Relevant or Irrelevant, our system enhances the user's ability to gain valuable insights and better comprehend the underlying problem.

The academic environment is undoubtedly one of the main means of introduction to the field of computer programming, however, in this environment, where practice is crucial for the development of solid foundations, the number of given assignments falls short from ideal, especially because of the time it takes to evaluate the proposed solutions. To fill this gap, a web platform has been implemented to serve as a repository of programming problems, for practice and learning, but also with a section for competitive programming. Above all things, the platform is capable of evaluating user's submissions in real time. The solution for evaluating submissions involves the use of compilers associated with their programming language and a parallel execution to bring improvements in resource usage efficiency.

We present an initiative that introduced the use of a competitive programming platform as a mechanism for auto-grading assignments for an introductory course on algorithm design and analysis. The specific objective of the intervention was to increase the number of assessed programming exercises to an average of 1 per week. A traditionally large enrolment with only a few graduate assistants available meant that prior to the intervention, few assignments were given, and the duration that students waited for feedback was long. Fresh problems were developed for deployment on the platform, each one targeting the specific learning objectives of the week in which they were given. The assignments were given in the format of a contest, and students were permitted to submit multiple attempts without penalty. There was a public leaderboard that showed real-time standings, but a student's grades depended only on the number of test cases his submissions passed and not on its ranking on the leaderboard. Anecdotally, we observed an increased degree of engagement with the course content. However a statistical analysis shows that the impact of the intervention on student performance, relative to previous instances of the course, was mixed. We discuss these and other findings.

Transformers are becoming more and more used for solving various Natural Language Processing tasks. Recently, they have also been employed to process source code to analyze very large code-bases automatically. This paper presents a custom-designed data analysis pipeline that can classify source code from competitive programming solutions. Our experiments show that the proposed models accurately determine the number of distinct solutions for a programming challenge task, even in an unsupervised setting. Together with our model, we also introduce a new dataset called AlgoSol-10 for this task that consists of ten programming problems together with all the source code submissions manually clustered by experts based on the algorithmic solution used to solve each problem. Taking into account the success of the approach on small source codes, we discuss the potential of further using transformers for the analysis of large code bases.

In undergraduate courses, there is a wide diversity of approaches to teaching various subjects, ranging from the more traditional methods to the utilization of digital media. Students' learning styles and motivational triggers for learning vary from one group to another. It is essential to understand the types of students in order to formulate a strategy that motivates and inspires them to learn effectively. Computer Science students should develop problem-solving skills. To acquire this competency, students must develop algorithmic thinking and not merely understand the syntax of a programming language. The most direct and effective way to obtain this competency is through practice. Students should be motivated by a learning strategy that takes advantage of their potential and enables them to engage in learning through appropriate activities. Gamification is a learning strategy that employs games within the educational environment to enhance student learning, reinforce knowledge, improve skills, or reward specific actions, among other objectives. The gamification strategy aims to motivate students, develop a better commitment in them, and foster the spirit of self-improvement. Under this context, competitive programming enables students to engage in problem-solving using advanced programming algorithms, enhancing their skills in a motivational environment. During competitions, they face real problems, realizing the applications of what they have learned, having the possibility to deepen their knowledge because they have to solve a problem in the most efficient way. The specific objective of this study is to use competitive programming as a gamification strategy in computer science groups to enhance problem-solving skills. The study demonstrates a substantial increase in students' motivation and learning. It illustrates that this learning strategy encourages students to learn more effectively in Computer Science courses.

Insecure code leading to software vulnerabilities can result in damages of the order of millions of dollars, and in critical systems, the loss of life. Hence, developing secure systems free of exploitable vulnerabilities has been a thrust area of research in recent years. Understanding developers' approach towards vulnerabilities in their code can pave the way for improvements in insecure coding practices. Recent studies have explored online Q&A forums, open-source code repositories, and other code information sources to gain important insights into the pervasiveness of security vulnerabilities. However, to the best of our knowledge, competitive programming (CP) data, a rich source of information about coding practices, has not been explored from the perspective of insecure coding practices. The evaluation and assessment of coding practices used in CP is particularly intriguing because it has become a key player in developer recruitment in recent times. In this paper, we make one of the first attempts to draw the attention of the community to the emergent concern of insecure coding practices in CP. We use static analysis tools to identify the prevalence and nature of vulnerabilities in a large amount of CP data (6.1 million submissions) obtained from a top-rated CP platform, CodeChef, and find that 34.2% of submissions contain vulnerabilities. We observe that many programmers consistently follow insecure coding practices and most of the detected vulnerabilities are characterized by security standards (CWE, CVSS) based on real-world software. © 2022 ACM.
