In this work, we propose a sequential distributed MPC algorithm for control of a linear supply chain. The algorithm is developed by closely taking into account supply chain specifics and requirements from practice, e.g., orders and leavings are both treated as decision variables at each stage and communication between stages is kept low. We present the rather surprising result that terminal equality constraints employed in the local MPC formulations are inherently satisfied for the overall system, despite the presence of bilateral dynamic couplings and solving the local MPC problems sequentially. This is due to the stock and flow nature of the problem. The proposed algorithm is shown to be recursively feasible, to asymptotically satisfy a constant customer demand and to achieve asymptotic convergence of the local stock and backlog to the desired levels. In current supply chains (SC), many process steps are not yet being monitored for proper quality. Adding product and process quality supervision can improve supply chain performance by reducing production loss and emergency transports. Due to its globally distributed supply chains, the automotive industry, in particular, offers many opportunities for application of quality supervision. This paper describes an approach for integrating sensor based quality data into supply chain management (SCM). It outlines the structure of a supply chain event management (SCEM) system that includes mobile and stationary sensors, data repositories and software services. In addition, it shows how to enhance the Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPCIS) communication standard in order to share sensor based quality data. In this context, the paper describes the necessary additions to the standard and provides an example how these may be used. Although Digital Twins has gained great momentum in the last few years, even being developed in the scenario of manufacturing systems, scarce attention has been devoted till now to the logistics Digital Twin (LDT). In this paper we describe the first efforts to define the requirements and derive from them the architecture and framework for LDT for fulfilment centres. The analysis stems from actual logistics platforms, for internet orders fulfilment and will use them as verification, validation and accreditation (VV&A) testbed. Copyright (C) 2020 The Authors.

Transport execution influences directly the operational performance of distributed production systems. In order to attain efficiency, many decisions have to be taken, such as, (i) the choice of best route which minimizes travelling distance, (ii) the definition of proper scheduling, which improves the displacement timing, and (iii) the selection of transportation mode. Transport routing and scheduling present stochastic characteristics which can be described as functions of probability. In the recent literature, it has been suggested that complex stochastic problems can be solved using simulation-based optimization approaches (SBO). SBO combines the power of optimization heuristics with the advantages of simulation models which can evaluate the effect of parameter changes even on very complex systems. Since it is capable of capturing the relationships and interactions among various entities and subsequently identifying a good design or solution, SBO might represent a powerful support to decision-making in complex and stochastic situations such as transport routing and scheduling in distributed production systems. Furthermore, transport systems are highly dynamic, which have to adapt permanently to a variety of oscillations such as unpredictable demand, urgent requests of high priority, or disturbances such as vehicle crashes. On the technological frontier, the availability of system state data is facilitated by the introduction of cyber-physical systems and industry 4.0 concepts and technologies. Thereof, a new approach that employs the newly available data, enabling real-time revision of transport routing and scheduling as operations take place, embodies a research opportunity with potential practical impact. complex manufacturing systems are challenging to study because of the high level of information required and the inaccessibility of most of it. Their tractability is however essential for the efficiency of state-of-the-art industries. This is particularly the case in the semiconductor industry that faces high mix and low volume conditions, and for which traditional methods fail to capture the high complexity and require continuous actions and corrections to adjust to heterogeneous toolsets and product-mix. We present the Concurrent WIP (CWIP), a new way of studying such systems at the level of a process-cluster by identifying each job's queue from its own perspective. CWIP is designed to be practical, with a low level of resource investments, yet informative. We explain how CWIP can be computed based on historical data and then used to derive capacity estimates and clearing functions without any assumptions on the system or on the form of the functions. In the process, we derive not only an average workload-dependent capacity, but also a confidence interval on this capacity. The relevance and efficiency of the proposed estimates are experimentally tested on a simulated system mimicking a small but complex process-cluster of the semiconductor industry. The estimates are used to predict WIP absorption times and we show how they characterize well not only the average behavior but also the full range of possible behaviors of the system. Finally, we discuss further applications of CWIP, that could be used to compute refined clearing functions or to monitor complex systems. Copyright (C) 2022 The Authors.

Transport processes directly influence the operational performance of distributed production systems. In this context, the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) aims for optimizing the delivery of goods, choosing the best route, which reduces travel time, distance or cost. This paper deals with a variant of the VRP, known as VRP with Time Windows (VRPTW) considering daily scheduling. Therefore, this paper proposes a simulation based optimization approach for transport scheduling and vehicle routing. The approach was validated in a test case focus on minimize the total cost of the distance travelled in a scenario composed by 13 vehicles and 100 clients. This paper focuses on the optimization of crude oil operations scheduling in a refinery that is supplied with crude oil by ship. One of the main challenges associated with the crude oil operations scheduling problem is the management of crude storage in tanks. Since storage capacity is limited and there are several types of crude oil depending on their composition, it is necessary to store mixtures of crude oil in tanks. This feature makes necessary the inclusion of nonlinear, non-convex constraints, which complicates the resolution of mathematical programming models. To address this problem, we have developed a mathematical programming model based on a continuous-time formulation using time slots, along with a strategy based on piecewise McCormick relaxation that allows us to efficiently handle the nonlinear constraints generated by blending crude oils in tanks.
