The definition of functions of complex system, like aircraft system, is the first step in a complex system design. The relationship between functions determines all of the behaviors of system. However, the relationship between aircraft functions of previous functional model is static, which means that it is not able to have a deeper analysis of aircraft level functions and the dynamic functional relationship. Finding a method that can model dynamic aircraft system is therefore necessary. This paper presents the results of a research study related to the application of functional modeling and design optimization methods in a Model Based system Engineering Environment. Therefore, the simulation is set to verify that the specified requirements are satisfied by the system model and optimized after a proper selection of the design variables for the aircraft system under analysis. Furthermore, a sample case study of an aircraft functional modeling is presented and the discussion on how to combine the client requirement and design capabilities is given.

The paper considers the problem of determining a suitable link structure for a set of networked interdependent processes, then providing a simplified description for their unknown underlying topology, also giving useful insights about their mutual influences. There are many scenarios where this problem has a prominent relevance. Indeed, it is often possible to measure the outputs of a large number of systems which are not independent, with no a priori knowledge of what the interconnections are. Examples can be found in fields as diverse as Economics, Biology, Ecology and Neural Sciences. The main idea of this work is to provide both a qualitative and quantitative description of the links among the processes in terms of modeling errors, assuming no a priori knowledge about the network features. To this aim, Wiener filtering and graph theory are exploited in a linear framework, in order to reconstruct a suitable connected and acyclic scheme for the internal connections of the whole system. Moreover, we show the consistency of the proposed technique, when the underlying network is actually connected and acyclic, proving that the structure obtained through the identification method coincides with the actual one and that this goal cannot be achieved via simple Wiener filtering. An application to real data illustrates the effectiveness of the suggested approach. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Flight test subjects have high risk and difficult to evaluate quantificationally. A test pilot model based on distribution hypothesis verification is proposed to obtain the test pilot's manipulation parameter. Delay time is selected as an example to illustrate the method. Aircraft model and hydraulic system model is established. Failure model of hydraulic system's sensor and actuator malfunction, oil block and pump power were set up and simulated by Simulink and AMESim. To improve the precision of flight risk assessment, an improved extreme value risk evaluation model based on nonlinearly decreasing weight particle swarm optimization (NDW-PSO based EVT) is proposed. Dynamic simulation from component level to aircraft level was realized by a comprehensive virtual flight testing (VFT) framework based on AMESim, MATLAB/Simulink and Flightgear cross-connect. NO. 43 risky subject about "hydraulic system malfunction" in Chinese GJB 626A-2006 was chosen as an example. Influence of hydraulic system failure to flight safety was analyzed and safety amelioration measures were proposed, which illustrate the former proposed method's validity.

In virtuo Experiments Based on the Multi-Interaction system Framework: the ReISCOP Meta-Model.

Virtual reality can enable computer scientists and domain experts to perform in virtuo experiments of numerical models of complex systems. Such dynamical and interactive experiments are indeed needed when it comes to complex systems with complex dynamics and structures. In this context, the question of the modeling tool to Study such models is crucial. Such tool, called a virtuoscope, must enable the virtual experimentation of models inside a conceptual and experimental framework for imagining, modeling and experimenting the complexity of the studied systems. This article describes a conceptual framework and a meta model, called ReISCOP, that enable the construction and simulation of models of biological, chemical or physical systems. The multi-interaction conceptual framework, based on the reification of interactions, is built upon the concepts of autonomy, structural coupling and synchronous scheduling of those reified interactions. Applications and virtual reality experiments described in the last Section show the expressiveness of this approach and its capacity to actually formulate heterogeneous models in heterogeneous time and space scales, which is required for studying biological complex systems.

Due to computational intractability, large scale coordination algorithms are necessarily heuristic and hence require tuning for particular environments. In domains where characteristics of the environment vary dramatically from scenario to scenario, it is desirable to have automated techniques for appropriately configuring the coordination. This paper presents an approach that takes performance data from a simulator to train a stochastic neural network that concisely models the complex, probabilistic relationship between configurations, environments and performance metrics. The stochastic neural network is used as the core of a tool that allows rapid online or offline configuration of coordination algorithms to particular scenarios and user preferences. The overall system allows rapid adaptation of coordination, leading to better performance in new scenarios.

Meta-synthesis system approach (MSA) is proposed to tackle with open complex giant systems (OCGS) problems by Chinese system scientists since the late 1980s. Its essential idea can be simplified as from con. dent qualitative hypothesis to vigorous quantitative validation. To apply this approach, the synthesis of human expert opinions and emergent knowing, machines' powerful computing capacity and the available knowledge and cases are specifically emphasized from the perspective of systems engineering practice. Then the MSA practice may bring new understandings, knowledge and even paradigms about messy and unknown issues, which are under exploration in knowledge science research. In this paper, MSA to knowledge science is addressed. After brief introduction of meta-synthesis approach, a working flow of MSA during problem solving process is addressed and leads to meta-synthetic view toward knowledge science, especially on knowledge creation. Next comes brief introduction to a test for demonstrating the MSA to a macroeconomic problem, which shows a new paradigm to macroeconomic problem solving, a kind of knowledge creation which is different from general macroeconomic problem solving.

In the early 1990s, Professor Qian Xuesen (Tsien HsueShen) and his colleagues proposed the Metasynthesis system approach for solving the open complex giant system problems. The method emphasizes the synthesis of collected information and knowledge of various kinds of experts, and combining quantitative methods with qualitative knowledge. Later it is evolved into Hall of Workshop for Meta-Synthetic Engineering (HWMSE) which emphasizes to make use of breaking advances in information technologies. Then continuous endeavors have been taken to put those ideas into practice. With tremendous advances in networking and distributed computing technologies, past difficulties in implementation are disappearing together with farther understandings of HWMSE and fruitful results achieved in similar or relevant research fields in recent years in China. In this paper some of those development are introduced, together with some parallel research work abroad.

The Fuzzy modeling Algorithm for complex systems Based on Stochastic Neural Network

A fuzzy modeling method for complex systems is studied. The notation of general stochastic neural network (GSNN) is presented and a new modeling method is given based on the combination of the modified Takagi and Sugeno's (MTS) fuzzy model and one-order GSNN. Using expectation-maximization(EM) algorithm, parameter estimation and model selection procedures are given. It avoids the shortcomings brought by other methods such as BP algorithm, when the number of parameters is large, BP algorithm is still difficult to apply directly without fine tuning and subjective tinkering. Finally, the simulated example demonstrates the effectiveness.

Neural-networks-based nonlinear dynamic modeling for automotive engines

This paper presents a procedure for using neural networks to identify the nonlinear dynamic model of the intake manifold and the throttle body processes in an automotive engine. A dynamic neural network called external recurrent neural network, is used for dynamic mapping and model construction. Dynamic Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is then applied to the weight-estimation problem. modeling results indicate that the neural-network-based models have a rather simple structure. Early results also confirm that the neural-network-based modeling of the manifold dynamics can result in a model that is comparable if not better than the first-principle-based models. In addition, it was verified that the neural model has good generalization capabilities. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Designing parallel models of soil contamination by the CARPET language

This paper describes the main features of the CARPET language and its practical use for programming three-dimensional models of the contamination of soils developed in the CABOTO project. CARPET is a high-level language based on the cellular automata model, which supports rapid prototyping of a large number of applications in science and engineering. A CARPET implementation has been used for programming cellular algorithms in the CAMEL parallel system. The CAMEL (Cellular Automata environMent for systems modeling) system is a parallel implementation of a software environment for the simulation and modeling of complex systems based on cellular automata. CAMEL offers the computing power of a parallel computer although hiding, by the CARPET language, the architecture issues to a user. The CARPET language allows the design of parallel programs for describing the actions of thousands of simple active interacting agents that might simulate the behavior of very complex systems.
