Simple inference heuristics versus complex decision machines - Introduction to special issue

Deep-thinking humans have striven to emulate deep thought in the machines being built, creating artificial intelligences and decision tools that mimic or enhance the human mind. Expert systems, data-mining software, artificial theorem provers, and chess-playing computers all perform elaborate calculations or process great amounts of information in an attempt to approach or exceed human decision making power. These complex decision machines are compared to simple inference heuristics. Results of these comparisons are presented and discussed.

Hybrid modulation strategy for eliminating low-frequency NP voltage oscillations in NPC using redistribution of NTV duty ratios

Neutral point (NP) clamped (NPC) inverters produce low-frequency NP voltage oscillations when modulated with nearest three-vector (NTV) methods for certain loading conditions. Non-NTV modulations can address these oscillations at the expense of increased switching frequency, output voltage distortion and complexity. This study presents a new generalised algorithm to implement hybrid modulation strategies which can also eliminate NP voltage oscillations using a combination of the aforementioned methods. The proposed algorithm avoids abrupt changeover between the two modulations and ensures minimum contribution of non-NTV operation and hence its drawbacks. Moreover, the algorithm is computationally efficient compared with its counterparts, since it only uses redistributed NTV duty ratios to generate NTV and non-NTV modulations instead of using two separate complex algorithms which result in increased computational burden. A non-NTV method called selected three-vector (STV) modulation is chosen to perform the detailed analysis of above proposed algorithm for hybrid NTV-STV modulation. Additionally, a simplified STV (SSTV) is derived to develop a new hybrid NTV-SSTV modulation strategy which further reduces losses and complexity compared with the hybrid NTV-STV modulation, without affecting the performance of NPC. The proposed algorithm and the derived hybrid modulation strategy are validated using simulation and experimental results.

Flexible image processing in Embedded Systems using Multi-agents Systems

Efficient Image processing can lead to complex algorithms. In Embedded context resources are limited and the approach of linear algorithm does not allow to decrease complexity regarding the variations of these resources availability. Agents are autonomous entities brought together into systems. They interact between them and with their environment to perform tasks. Their interactions allow them to share knowledge and capacities in order to adapt themselves to a changing context. In this paper we propose to use Multi-agents systems algorithms to perform flexible Image processing in an Embedded context. We will introduce our hardware context and the architecture choices made to adapt Multi-agents systems to the Embedded field. We will then present an experiment focusing on pixel interpolation process to study the flexibility of our solution. © 2016

Digital Signal Processing (DSP) chips are getting faster, with higher available performance and lower power consumption. Simultaneously, the complexity of algorithms that are being implemented on these devices is increasing rapidly. Currently, Texas Instruments (TI) has targeted the TMS320C5000, fixed point (16 bits), family of DSPs to be the most power efficient DSP engine. Implementing complex algorithms on a fixed-point platform is not a trivial task. Fixed-point programs require variables to have a. quantization format, and prevent (minimize) overflow and underflow quantization errors The process of converting a successful floating-point implementation of an algorithm to fixed-point can be a long and tedious process. This paper presents software tool (Fast Quantization Tool (FaQT)), which simplifies the process of converting an algorithm from floating-point to fixed-point. The paper also presents the application of FaQT to a Noise Reduction (NR) algorithm used in speech processing for cell-phone and other audio applications.

Quadrotor or popularly known as quadcopter is an unmanned flying robotic platform that is driven by four fixed rotors. Quadrotors serve as a perfect flying platform in an anonymous and intricate environments eliminating the need to jeopardize human life in such hazardous situations. Apart from serving as a stable flight stage, these can do breathtaking acrobatic and complex maneuvers that are beyond the scope of the conventional aerial vehicles. There has been a tremendous surge in funding for research and development of such Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) as the investors are very well aware of the influence these robots have in military as well as civilian market. However the flip side to these overwhelming abilities the quadrotors have is the need for a robust and an efficient control model. The system designing process is a complex integration of aero-modeling and apt control techniques for stability. Multiple parameters need to be co-ordinated in real time for a smooth control of a multi rotor vehicle. This generally results in complex algorithms which increase computation requirements that can be costly. On the other hand cost reduction implies limitations in performance or poor control. This paper focuses to solve these challenges by dramatically simplifying the complexity of control algorithms without compromising on performance parameters of the quadrotor following strict cost constraints. We streamline the mathematical model simulations and the use of PD and PID control techniques by constraint based optimization that results in a simple, cost-effective and a robust control model. Through rigorous simulations and testing we not only obtain a faithful control model but also execute a self-leveling feature making the quadrotor smart. We also discuss the future possibilities for low-cost autonomous navigation in indoor environments.

Robot positioning and target collaborative control in unknown complex environments

The role of target coordination problem in robot control is very important, but there is a problem of low collaborative control. The goal coordination problem cannot solve the problem of pairing teachers and classrooms in robot control, and it is reasonably Lower. Therefore, this paper proposes a complex algorithm to construct an optimization model for target collaboration problems. First, the management standard is used to divide the robot control data, and the robot control data is carried out according to the management requirements to realize robot control Preprocessing. Then, the management standards are divided according to the teaching standards, forming an optimized set of robot control and digging deeper into the Japanese time. MATLAB simulation shows that complex algorithms' optimization degree and stability are better than those of online control methods because the teaching standards are consistent.
