Providing real-time support through component object model

While there has been substantial work on real-time CORBA-to offer real-time support in a distributed heterogeneous environment with standard real-time middle-ware, comparatively less work has been done to investigate support for real-time applications in COM, the direct competitor of CORBA. In this paper, we examine the COM technology and explore the possibility of providing real-time support in COM. We argue that real-time COM should provide a policy specification interface between the application and the underlying (real-time) operating systems that is as declarative as possible, and we conclude that COM can be extended to provide various real-time support services through this interface. We shall discuss an experimental prototype targeted for real applications along the Line of our proposal. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Analysis of a conflict between aggregation and interface negotiation in microsoft's component object model

Many software projects today are based on the integration of independently designed software components that are acquired on the market, rather than developed within the projects themselves. A component standard, or integration architecture, is a set of design rules meant to ensure that such components can be integrated in defined ways without undue effort. The rules of a component standard define, among other things, component interoperability and composition mechanisms. Understanding the properties of such mechanisms and interactions between them is important for the successful development and integration of software components, as well as for the evolution of component standards. This paper presents a rigorous analysis of two such mechanisms: component aggregation and dynamic interface negotiation, which were first introduced in Microsoft's component object model (COM). We show that interface negotiation does not function properly within COM aggregation boundaries. In particular, interface negotiation generally cannot be used to determine the identity and set of interfaces of aggregated components. This complicates integration within aggregates. We provide a mediator-based example, and show that the problem is in the sharing of interfaces inherent in COM aggregation.

Optimal design of heat pump assisted thermally coupled distillation sequences

This work presents a comprehensive methodology for the optimal design of heat pump-assisted, thermally coupled distillation sequences, aiming to support the electrification and decarbonization of energy-intensive industrial processes. A rigorous simulation-based optimization approach is developed, coupling Aspen HYSYS with MATLAB through a client–server architecture. Optimization is carried out using a customized Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm. The methodology simultaneously considers optimal column sequencing, thermal coupling, direct and indirect heat integration (via vapor recompression and bottom flashing cycles), process intensification strategies such as Divided Wall Columns, and heat recovery techniques inspired by Self-Heat Recuperation Technology. The model is applied to several case studies involving the separation of zeotropic quaternary mixtures. Results indicate that the electrification of distillation sequences can be usually achieved with minimal or no economic penalties while reducing reliance on fossil-based utilities. But even in cases in which the full de-fossilization has an important penalty cost, the optimal solution usually includes heat pumps (partial electrification) with significant economic and environmental benefits compared with the actual configurations without heat pumps.

Geographical information system-based computational implementation and application of spatial three-dimensional slope stability analysis

Three-dimensional (313) evaluation of slope stability is a widely addressed problem in the domain of geotechnical engineering. The growing popularity of the geographical information system (GIS) approach, with capacities ranging from conventional data storage to complex spatial analysis and graphical presentation, means that it is also becoming a powerful tool for geotechnical engineers. In this study, in which we combine GIS grid-based data with four proposed column-based models of 3D slope stability analysis, we have devised new correspondent GIS grid-based 3D deterministic models to calculate the safety factor of the slope. Based on the four GIS-based 3D slope stability analysis models, a GIS-based program, 3DSlopeGIS, has been developed to implement the algorithm where all the input data are in the same format as the GIS dataset. The 3DSlopeGIS system, which is an extension of the widely used GIS software package, represents the combined development of 3D slope stability analysis and GIS-based component object model (COM) skills. Since all related data are supplied in the GIS format, this new database approach will be convenient for the repeated renewal and consulting of data. Certain widely addressed examples are evaluated in this paper and the results show the correction and potential of this GIS-based tool as a means of assessing the 3D stability of a slope. Two practical slope problems have been evaluated using the 3DSlopeGIS system. The results illustrate the convenience of data management as well as the effective range selection of Monte-Carlo random variables and the critical slip surface location in some parts of a lava dome. Developing extendible component-oriented finite element software

The component-oriented software development can greatly improve the implementation efficiency and ease the extensibility and maintenance of large engineering software. In this paper, a prototype component-oriented software system for structural analysis using the finite element method is presented. The prototype program is completely based on the component object model that enables the development of modular, object-oriented, customizable and upgradable, distributed programming systems using a number of different programming languages. CALHIDRA 3.0-New software application for river water quality prediction based on RWQM1

This paper presents CalHidra 3.0, a new software package developed for dynamic simulation of water quality in rivers. CalHidra 3.0 combines a 1-D hydrodynamic model based on Saint Venant equations, a transport sub-model that incorporates the advection-dispersion terms, and a simplified version of the River Water Quality model 1 (RWQM1) for the biochemical transformations. This advanced biochemical sub-model allows the dynamic simulation of the bacterial populations in rivers, making possible the simulation of the river acclimatisation to changes of pollutant load or environmental conditions. The software also includes new tools for a Monte Carlo based Bayesian calibration of the unknown model parameters. CalHidra 3.0 is implemented based on the component object model (COM) programming paradigm and uses the Windows graphical environment. Three case studies illustrate the possibilities of the CalHidra 3.0 software. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A SOTER management system was developed by analyzing, designing, programming, testing, repeated proceeding and progressing based on the object-oriented method. The function of the attribute database management is inherited and expanded in the new system. The integrity and security of the SOTER database are enhanced. The attribute database management, the spatial database management and the model base are integrated into SOTER based on the component object model (COM), and the graphical user interface (GUI) for Windows is used to interact with clients, thus being easy to create and maintain the SOTER, and convenient to promote the quantification and automation of soil information application.

STAO: a component architecture for raster and time series modeling

Implementation of spatially distributed models using Geographic Information System (GIS) involves accessing and processing of spatial and time series data. Most of the GIS software do not provide an explicit functionality to support handling of time series data in modeling and also requires exclusive client storage of one-dimensional array for raster data access. This paper describes an attempt to overcome such short comings by developing Spatial and Time series data Access objects (STAO) using Microsoft's component object model (COM (R)). STAO has advanced enough modeling objects which are developed for the raster and time series data access and analysis while they are simple enough for the user to implement them in spatial models in a variety of native proprietary formats. The STAO architecture defined in this study has multiple advantages in terms of interoperability, reusability, and extendibility. The usefulness of these objects has been demonstrated by implementing: (1) the USDA's Soil Conservation Service (SCS) method of rainfall runoff estimation and (2) an algorithm for finding time area diagram at sub-watershed level. The results of implementing SCS using STAO in Kolli Hills watershed is discussed and the computed runoff values are in good agreement with field observed values. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Extending a scientific application with scripting capabilities

Like many of us, your application probably started out small. you had severalsubroutines you used daily, and over time, other people started using them as well. the more peopleused your subroutines, however, the more changes and additions became inevitable. To satisfy allthe demands, you decide that adding scripting capability to your application was the answer, butwhat's the best approach? I picked COM (the component object modelto implement scriptingcapability in Shvib for Windows. Shvib is a shock and vibration analysis program based on TomDerby's Fortran subroutines that I have been developing at Barry Controls. Freely and commerciallyavailable scripting languages abound out there, but after investigating some of them, I decided touse Python as a scripting language for Shvib. Shvib has a Visual Basi6 GUI and several Fortransubroutines compiled as Windows DLLs to perform computations. Because Shvib is a Windowsapplication, COM was the natural choice to glue the Visual BasiGUI, the Fortran DLLs, and Pythonscripting together.

PTFIndicator: An IRENE_DLL-based application to evaluate estimates from pedotransfer functions by integrated indices

Pedotransfer functions (PTFs) are physical-mathematical models which allow estimating soil hydraulic properties from soil data. In the absence of direct measurements, they represent a valuable tool for providing agro-ecological models with soil input estimations, whose accuracy is currently a key issue, especially in field- and regional-scale modelling which rely on soil information databases. The class library IRENE_DLL (Integrated Resources for Evaluating Numerical Estimates - Dynamic Link Library) is a repository of statistical methods and procedures designed to properly handle comparisons between model estimates and actual measurements. A distinct feature is the support for developing integrated evaluation indices based on a two-stage, fuzzy-based approach. We implemented this approach into PTFIndicator, a Microsoft Excel application based on IRENE_DLL, to evaluate the performance of PTFs. This paper introduces the overall functioning of the application, and briefly discusses one relevant worked example. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
