The object-oriented technology has provided practical tools and basic theories which can be realized and applied in the software component. This paper will present the relationship between object-oriented methods and software reuse technology;it will also present the method process of extracting components in order to realize software reuse.

Developing software product-lines based on a set of shared components is a proven tactic to enhance reuse, quality, and time to market in producing a portfolio of products. Largescale product families face rapidly increasing maintenance challenges as their evolution can happen both as a result of collective domain engineering activities, and as a result of product-specific developments. To make informed decisions about prospective modifications, developers need to estimate what other sections of the system will be affected and need attention, which is known as change impact analysis. This paper contributes a method to carry out change impact analysis in a component-based product family, based on system-wide information flow analysis. We use static program slicing as the underlying analysis technique, and use model-driven engineering (MDE) techniques to propagate the ripple effects from a source code modification into all members of the product family. In addition, our approach ranks results based on an approximation of the scale of their impact. We have implemented our approach in a prototype tool, called Richter, which was evaluated on a real-world product family.

A Framework-based Approach for Fault-Tolerant Service Robots Regular Paper

Recently the component-based approach has become a major trend in intelligent service robot development due to its reusability and productivity. The framework in a component-based system should provide essential services for application components. However, to our knowledge the existing robot frameworks do not yet support fault tolerance service. Moreover, it is often believed that faults can be handled only at the application level. In this paper, by extending the robot framework with the fault tolerance function, we argue that the framework-based fault tolerance approach is feasible and even has many benefits, including that : 1) the system integrators can build fault tolerance applications from non-fault-aware components;2) the constraints of the components and the operating environment can be considered at the time of integration, which - cannot be anticipated eaily at the time of component development;3) consistency in system reliability can be obtained even in spite of diverse application component sources. In the proposed construction, we build XML rule files defining the rules for probing and determining the fault conditions of each component, contamination cases from a faulty component, and the possible recovery and safety methods. The rule files are established by a system integrator and the fault manager in the framework controls the fault tolerance process according to the rules. We demonstrate that the fault-tolerant framework can incorporate widely accepted fault tolerance techniques. The effectiveness and real-time performance of the framework-based approach and its techniques are examined by testing an autonomous mobile robot in typical fault scenarios.

Improving interpretation of component-based systems quality through visualisation techniques

component-based software development is increasingly more commonplace and is widely used in the development of commercial software systems. This has led to the existence of several research works focusing on software component-based systems quality. The majority of this research proposes quality models focused on component-based systems in which different measures are proposed. In general, the result of assessing the measures is a number, which is necessary to determine the component-based system quality level. However, understanding and interpreting the data set is not an easy task. In order to facilitate the interpretation of results, this study selects and adapts a specific visual metaphor with which to show component-based systems quality. A tool has additionally been developed which permits the automatic assessment of the measures to be carried out. The tool also shows the results visually and proposes corrective actions through which to improve the level of quality. A case study is used to assess and to show the quality of a real-world component-based software system in a graphic manner.

A language implementation with proper compositionality, enables a compiler developer to divide-and-conquer the complexity of building a large language by constructing a set of smaller languages. Ideally, these small language implementations should be independent of each other such that they can be designed, implemented and debugged individually, and later be reused in different applications (e.g.. building domain-specific languages). However, the language composition offered by several existing parser generators resides at the grammar level, which means all the grammar modules need to be composed together and all corresponding ambiguities have to be resolved before generating a single parser for the language. This produces tight coupling between grammar modules, which harms information hiding and affects independent development of language features. To address this problem, we have developed a novel parsing algorithm that we call component-based LR (CLR) parsing, which provides code-level compositionality for language development by producing a separate parser for each grammar component. In addition to shift and reduce actions, the algorithm extends general LR parsing by introducing switch and return actions to empower the parsing action to jump from one parser to another. Our experimental evaluation demonstrates that CLR increases the comprehensibility, reusability, changeability and independent development ability of the language implementation. Moreover, the loose coupling among parser components enables CLR to describe grammars that contain LR parsing conflicts or require ambiguous token definitions, such as island grammars and embedded languages. PaMS: A component-based service for finding the missing full text of articles cataloged in a digital library

Providing access to the full text of cataloged articles is a highly desirable feature for a digital library. However, in many such systems, not all metadata records have (a direct pointer to) a corresponding full-text document. In this article, we present PaMS: a new service for finding the missing full text of articles cataloged in a digital library. This service is implemented as a software component in order to be readily deployable to existing systems. It works as a parameterized meta-search engine and allows digital library administrators to easily set up a search strategy, i.e., a list of existing search engines to be queried for the missing full text, as well as the filtering and ranking policies to be applied to the results retrieved by each search engine. We evaluate our service with respect to its effectiveness and efficiency with collections from two distinct fields: computer science and biomedical and life sciences. Our results attest the effectiveness of PaMS for finding missing full-text documents as well as other relevant material while keeping its overall execution time at a reasonable level. component-based software engineering has recently emerged as a promising solution to the development of system-level software. Unfortunately, current approaches are limited to specific platforms and domains. This lack of generality is particularly problematic as it prevents knowledge sharing and generally drives development costs up. In the past, we have developed a generic approach to component-based software engineering for system-level software called OpenCom. In this paper, we present OpenComL an instantiation of OpenCom to Linux environments and show how it can be profiled to meet a range of system-level software in Linux environments. For this, we demonstrate its application to constructing a programmable router platform and a middleware for parallel environments.

Biomedical Text Mining (BioTM) is providing valuable approaches to the automated curation of scientific literature. However, most efforts have addressed the benchmarking of new algorithms rather than user operational needs. Bridging the gap between BioTM researchers and biologists' needs is crucial to solve real-world problems and promote further research. We present @Note, a platform for BioTM that aims at the effective translation of the advances between three distinct classes of users: biologists, text miners and software developers. Its main functional contributions are the ability to process abstracts and full-texts;an information retrieval module enabling PubMed search and journal crawling;a pre-processing module with PDF-to-text conversion, tokenisation and stopword removal;a semantic annotation schema: a lexicon-based annotator: a user-friendly annotation view that allows to correct annotations and a Text Mining Module supporting dataset preparation and algorithm evaluation. @Note improves the interoperability, modularity and flexibility when integrating in-home and open-source third-party components. Its component-based architecture allows the rapid development of new applications, emphasizing the principles of transparency and simplicity of use. Although it is still on-going, it has already allowed the development of applications that are currently being used. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The paper Researches on the component-based software development(CBSD) method, brings forward and analyses several key technologies of component-based software reuse. This paper first designs the architecture fits for the CBSD method, explains the development process fits for the architecture, then designs and analyses the component, which is the basic part of the CBSD method, and analyses the requirements and constraints of the component. From this paper we can realize the advantage of CBSD method with these technologies.

A Web services-based framework for building componentized digital libraries

We present a new Web services-based framework for building componentized digital libraries (DLs). We particularly demonstrate how traditional RDBMS technology can be easily deployed to support several common digital library services. Configuration and customization of the framework to build specialized systems is supported by a wizard-like tool which is based on a generic metamodel for DLs. Such a tool implements a workflow process that segments the DL design tasks into well-defined steps and drives the designer along these steps. Both the framework and the configuration tool are evaluated in terms of several performance and usability criteria. Our experimental evaluation demonstrates the feasibility and superior performance of our framework, as well as the effectiveness of the wizard tool for setting up DLs. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc.
