In this paper we will take a look at the inside of connected homes, which build up complex IT systems. The building blocks of such systems are electronic devices, networks, and services, which empower the user to interact with his environment. Web-enabled eHome services offer functionality to the user by abstracting from devices and realize connectivity in three dimensions: ( 1) inner connectivity, ( 2) outer connectivity, and ( 3) integrative connectivity. Generations of Web-enabled eHome services have been developed based on proprietary hard- and software. Today, an extensible and modular platform is required for forward-looking design and implementation of such services. We describe a new view on component-based development of Web-enabled eHome services. While there is an adequate framework ( open service gateway initiative) for the development of state-of-the-art Web-enabled eHome services, there is no knowledge about the system and service structure and its architecture in detail. We propose an 3-layer system structure (called PowerArchitecture), which incorporates several established design ideas and show how this cookbook makes system architects' and developers' life easier.

component-based development (CBD) is the building of software systems out of prepackaged generic elements. The current excitement about CBD results from the convergence of four phenomena originating from quite different backgrounds: on the scientific side, the progress of modern software engineering ideas with their special emphasis on reuse. On the industrial side, the widespread success of theoretically unpretentious but practically useful techniques for building GUIs, databases, and other parts of applications out of components. On the political side, the push by some of the major players for competing interconnection technologies: CORBA, COM, and Enterprise JavaBeans. In the software world at large, the generalization of object technology, which provides both the conceptual basis and the practical tools for building and using components. The catalyst behind component-based development is the growing realization by the software industry that something must be done to control the costs of developing software products and boosting their quality

Modern User Interfaces (UIs) are increasingly expected to be plastic in the sense that they retain a constant level of usability, even when subjected to context changes at runtime. Adaptive UIs (AUIs) have been promoted as a solution for context variability due to their ability to automatically adapt to the context-of-use at runtime. However, development of AUIs is a complex task as different aspects such as context monitoring and UI adaptation have to be supported. In previous work, model-driven engineering approaches were proposed to support the development of AUIs in a systematic and efficient manner. However, existing model-driven development approaches for AUIs face challenges regarding flexibility, reusability, and compatibility to de facto standard UI frameworks like Angular, which hinder their industry-wide usage and adoption in practice. To address this problem and explore an alternative approach, we propose a component-based development framework for AUIs (CoBAUI). CoBAUI defines a modular framework for supporting the development of AUIs and consists of various components to cover aspects like context monitoring and UI adaptation at widget level. The CoBAUI framework was implemented based on Angular and aims to support the development of AUIs through highly reusable and flexible components. We demonstrate the benefit of our CoBAUI framework based on a case study of an AUI for a library web application.

In this paper, we present a scheme for the design of mobile agents applications based on components. There is still a paramount issue to overcome in mobile agent technology to allow its popularization: the high programming complexity. The proposed scheme enables secure mobile agent creation by the composition of code components, significantly simplifying the work for the developer. Agent features like itinerary protection, results retrieving, or fault-tolerance can be achieved through reusable components. Our proposal is a steady step forward for the promotion of mobile agent applications.

The energetic operation planning of a hydrothermal power system aims to provide an economic and reliable operational policy that embraces time frames ranging from the long term energy control of hydroelectric resources to the electric and hydraulic aspects of daily generation dispatch. Due to the planning complexity and different aspects that this problem has to address, it may require a chain of computational tools to be solved. Those computational tools should permit to evaluate the current and future system performance, reliability, safety, and ability to grow with production or operating requirements. This work applies component-based development (CBD) towards the energetic operational planning of the Brazilian hydrothermal system. CBD is different from previous approaches, such as procedural programming or object-oriented programming, in its separation of component specification from implementation, and in the division of component specifications into interfaces. Further, CBD reestablishes the idea of reuse and introduces new elements.

The paper assumes a software engineering view on game-based learning. It outlines our approach of a component-based educational game framework, presents its implementation, and discusses its usage and utility via three experiments. By proposing a component-based framework, i.e. a reusable software architecture skeleton with a growing library of components that can be plugged together and exchanged, we seek to increase reuse in the development of digital educational games. The paper presents our Plug 'n Train framework and its implementation in Java and XML. Inspired by Clancey's (1984) architecture of Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs), Plug 'n Train expects an eLearning system to consist, at least rudimentarily, of four semantic components: User Interface, User, Expert, and Process Steering. A new eLearning system is constructed by plugging these together. We show how this works in our implementation by reporting on a proof-of-concept implementation of the four-component architecture - a simple, yet functional ITS on organic chemistry. The prospect of composing a new eLearning system by exchanging only a subset of components and reusing the rest is particularly interesting for game-based learning. Our hypothesis is that a traditional eLearning application can be transformed into an educational game by exchanging very few modules. In particular, we assumed that we could turn our proof-of-concept ITS into a game by replacing only the user interface. Experiment 1 re-created the Java-based user interface in the game-like virtual world OpenSim and plugged it into the existing architecture. Experiment 2 tried the same with a Tetris- inspired user interface designed in Flash. Both experiments prove the utility of exchangeable modules. Production planning is a key part of production management of manufacturing enterprises. Since computerization began, modern production planning has been developed starting with Material Requirement Planning (MRP), and today Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS), Supply Chain Management (SCM) has been spreading and advanced. However, in the shipbuilding field, rather than applying these general-purpose production planning methodologies, in most cases, each shipyard has developed its own production planning system. This is because the applications of general-purpose production planning methods are limited due to the order-taking industry such as shipbuilding with highly complicated construction process consisting of millions of parts per ship. This study introduces the design and development of the production planning system reflecting the production environment of heavy shipyards in Korea. Since Korean shipyards such as Hyundai, Daewoo and Samsung build more than 10 ships per year (50-70 ships in the case of large shipyards), a planning system for the mixed production with complex construction processes is required. This study draws requirements using PI/BPR (process innovation and business process reengineering) methodology to develop a production planning system for shipyards that simultaneously build several ships. Then, CBD software development methodology was applied for the design and implementation of planning system with drawn requirements. It is expected that the systematic development procedure as well as the requirements and functional elements for the development of the shipyard production planning system introduced in this study will be able to present important guidelines in the related research field of shipbuilding management. A theoretical foundation of variability in component-based development

component-based development (CBD) is revolutionizing the process of building applications by assembling pre-built reusable components. components should be designed more for inter-organizational reuse, rather than intra-organization reuse through domain analysis which captures the commonality of the target domain. Moreover, the minor variations within the commonality should also be modeled and reflected in the design of components so that family members can effectively customize the components for their own purpose. To carry out domain analysis effectively and design widely reusable components, precise definitions of variability-related terms and a classification of variability types must be made. In this paper, we identify the fundamental difference between conventional variability and component variability, and present five types of variability and three kinds of variability scopes. Each type of variability is precisely defined for its applicable situations and guidelines. Assessing organisational obstacles to component-based development: a case study approach

This paper discusses some human, social and organisational issues affecting the introduction of component-based development (CBD) in organisations. In particular, the paper presents the outcome of a case study aimed at assessing organisational obstacles influencing successful application of CBD in the industry. We present some organisational problems experienced by three organisations in adopting and implementing CBD, including cognitive skills, disincentives, organisational politics and organisational culture. In each case we suggest some solutions that developers and managers should consider in order to minimise these organisational problems. We suggest that applying social-technical approaches can minimise the impact of these organisational obstacles. Examples of social-technical approaches include maintaining a relationship with customers throughout the development process and eliciting support from key sponsors and stakeholders. Understanding 'variation' in component-based development: case findings from practice

This paper discusses the importance of understanding and capturing variation in component-based development using the context of a six-month action research project carried out within a major system solution provider. The issues raised in the empirical context show that the norms of given development disciplines need to adapt for component-based development projects and that this is neither trivial nor easy. In addressing such issues, the implications of adopting a domain-based approach to component-based development are explored alongside the means by which this may be undertaken. This exploration highlights the need to provide an explicit understanding of variation and the ramifications of providing a component with varying degrees of context independence are explored via a scenario developed in practice. The scenario shows that neither reuse nor variation should be allowed to be chaotic if component-based development is to handle flexibility in a more cost-effective and coherent manner than system maintenance currently does. The paper concludes by presenting an example of an elaborated use case to illustrate how existing techniques can be modified to provide a structured environment for understanding variation. Holistically, the discussion shows that component-based development should not be viewed as a singular discipline, but rather as an umbrella activity that requires the melding of a number of important research areas.
