Today, the newly available embedded boards with GPUs provide a solution to satisfy the ever-increasing requirements of modern embedded systems. component-based development is a well-known paradigm used to develop embedded systems. However, this paradigm lacks GPU support to address the specifics of these new boards. This leads to components that typically have reduced reusability, poor maintainability and portability. One way to tackle the existing shortcomings is through flexible components, i.e., platform-agnostic components that, at design time, offer the possibility to be executed either on CPU or GPU. The current realization of flexible components, i.e., as regular components with functionality tailored for the selected hardware, introduces additional overheads such as component communication overhead. In order to tackle the introduced overheads, our solution groups connected flexible components under a flexible group that conceptually behaves as a component. We introduce an algorithm to identify the existing groups in a given component-based system and the generation rules that automatically realizes groups as regular components. To evaluate the feasibility of the new concept, the flexible group is implemented using a state-of-the-practice component model (i.e., Rubus) and examined through the vision system of an underwater robot.

Open Design Architecture for Round Trip Engineering

This chapter introduces a component design of application logic in special type of information system architecture called Open Design Architecture for Round Trip Engineering (ODARTE). This architecture supports model-driven development and integrates information system design with its executable form. It is possible to extract design anytime, modify it, and load back to change the activity and behavior of information system. In this approach, the application logic represents solely functionality and can be described either by sequential model of Windows Workflow Foundation or by UML activity or interaction diagrams. This approach allows creation of flexible and modifiable meta-design of application logic. Finally, an experimental simulation is shown demonstrating the effect of proposal which relates to pilot version of runtime environment for ODARTE support.

This paper describes a formal component language, used to support automated component-based program development. The components, referred to as templates, are machine processable, meaning that appropriate tool support, such as retrieval support, can be developed The templates are highly adaptable, meaning that they can be applied to a wide range of problems. Some of the main features of the language are described, including: higher-order parameters;state variable declarations;specification statements and conditionals;applicability conditions and theories;meta-level placeholders;and abstract data structures.

Identifying drawbacks or insufficiencies in terms of safety is important also in early development stages of safety critical systems. In industry, development artefacts such as components or units, are often reused from existing artefacts to save time and costs. When development artefacts are reused, their existing safety analysis models are an important input for an early safety assessment for the new system, since they already provide a valid model. component fault trees support such reuse strategies by a compositional horizontal approach. But current development strategies do not only divide systems horizontally, e.g., by encapsulating different functionality into separate components and hierarchies of components, but also vertically, e.g. into software and hardware architecture layers. Current safety analysis methodologies, such as component fault trees, do not support such vertical layers. Therefore, we present here a methodology that is able to divide safety analysis models into different layers of a systems architecture. We use so called Architecture Layer Failure Dependencies to enable component fault trees on different layers of an architecture. These dependencies are then used to generate safety evidence for the entire system and over all different architecture layers. A case study applies the approach to hardware and software layers.

An empirical study of variations in COTS-based software development processes in the Norwegian IT industry

More and more software projects use Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components. Although previous studies have proposed specific COTS-based development processes, there are few empirical studies that investigate how to use and customize COTS-based development processes for different project contexts. This paper describes an exploratory study of state-of-the-practice of COTS-based development processes. Sixteen software projects in the Norwegian IT companies have been studied by structured interviews. The results are that COTS-specific activities can be successfully incorporated in most traditional development processes (such as waterfall or prototyping), given proper guidelines to reduce risks and provide specific assistance. We have identified four COTS-specific activities-the build vs. buy decision, COTS component selection, learning and understanding COTS components, and COTS component integration - and one new role, that of a knowledge keeper. We have also found a special COTS component selection activity for unfamiliar components, combining Internet searches with hands-on trials. The process guidelines are expressed as scenarios, problems encountered, and examples of good practice. They can be used to customize the actual development processes, such as in which lifecycle phase to put the new activities into. Such customization crucially depends on the project context, such as previous familiarity with possible COTS components and flexibility of requirements.

This research paper proposes experimental support to secure round trip engineering and use of security performance flexibility trusted operating systems for the designing of secure web applications. In this research paper, to address security concerns, we suggest use of trusted operating systems as a platform to run these web applications. For improving the performance of these web applications, we observe that all security checks in a trusted operating system are not necessary. As per our suggestion, various unnecessary security checks can be skipped by administrator, so that system performance of these web applications can improve. These unnecessary security checks, system calls and operations can be easily identified at the time of requirements elicitation. For example, as we know, the popular web servers deal with public information. The majority of this information is publicly readable and available to all users, but these users should not be able to alter this data. This research paper aims to support the efficiency of object-oriented class-based programming and object-oriented modeling in secure software development. The round trip engineering for the development of complex web applications, helps developers in code restructuring, identify probable bugs or deficiencies for probable improvements and helps from the analysis phase to the maintenance phase. © 2017, Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of Computer Applications and Management.

The development of information technology and the improved performance of embedded devices have led to embedded software of increasing scale and complexity. component-based development (CBI)), which divides software into components and subsystems, is effective for efficiently developing large-scale embedded software. However, components created in CBD are not interchangeable dynamically while the application is running, and components written in C must be compiled to change and run. To address this issue, this paper proposes the component framework using mruby to change the component behavior dynamically. The proposed framework works on TOPPERS Embedded component System written in C. Experimental results show that the time it takes to change the behavior of the component is shorter using the proposed framework than using a component written in C. The proposed framework can realize CBD more efficiently.

Retrieval of software components from a library relies on techniques for matching user requirements against library component interfaces. In this paper we introduce a number of techniques for matching formally specified, state-based modules. These techniques will form the basis for retrieval tool support. The techniques described in this paper build on existing specification matching methods, based on individual functions, specified using pre- and post-conditions. We begin by defining a basic module matching technique, based on snatching the individual units within a module. We consider variations of this technique that take into account two important features of modules: the visibility, of module entities;and the use of state invariants. An advanced technique, based on data refinement and the use of coupling invariants, is also described.

Software systems and applications are increasingly constructed as assemblies of pro-existing components. This makes software development cheaper and faster, and results in more favorable preconditions for achieving higher quality. This approach, however, introduces several problems, most of them originating from the fact that pre-existing software components behave as black boxes. One problem is that it is difficult to analyze the properties of systems in which they are incorporated. To simplify the evaluation of system properties, different techniques have been developed to predict the behavior of systems on the basis of the properties of the constituent components. Because many cannot be formally specified, these techniques make use of statistical terms such as probability or mean value to express system properties. This paper discusses ethical aspects of the interpretation of such predictions. This problem is characteristic of many domains (data mining, safety-critical systems, etc) but it is inherent in component-based software development.
