Dealing with crosscutting and dynamic features in component software using aspect-orientation: requirements and experiences

Coping with crosscutting and dynamic features of software systems has significant impacts on software modularity, reusability, adaptability, and maintainability. However, dealing with such features is a tremendous challenge for different software paradigms, particularly component-based software development (CBSD) where components can be used as black box software units. Fortunately, dealing with crosscutting features is the main focus of aspect-orientation (AO). To compromise, a plethora of different AO and CBSD combinations are available. There is, however, little consensus on how AO and CBSD can be combined and what AO qualities need to be integrated for getting maximum benefits from the combination. In the aim to reach a consensus and increase the understanding of requirements for proper combinations that deal with crosscutting and dynamic features, the authors conduct a domain analysis study of existing combination endeavours;they first identify a set of requirements ought to be fulfilled for proper modelling of crosscutting and dynamic features in component software using AO;second, they group the identified requirements into an evaluation model;third, they check the capability of existing combinations to validate the evaluation model. The study highlighted mandatory requirements for proper combinations and revealed that none of the existing endeavours validates the evaluation model.

The idea of developing software components was envisioned more than forty years ago. In the past two decades, component-based software Engineering (CBSE) has emerged as a distinguishable approach in software engineering, and it has attracted the attention of many researchers, which has led to many results being published in the research literature. There is a huge amount of knowledge encapsulated in conferences and journals targeting this area, but a systematic analysis of that knowledge is missing. For this reason, we aim to investigate the state-of-the-art of the CBSE area through a detailed literature review. To do this, 1231 studies dating from 1984 to 2012 were analyzed. Using the available evidence, this paper addresses five dimensions of CBSE: main objectives, research topics, application domains, research intensity and applied research methods. The main objectives found were to increase productivity, save costs and improve quality. The most addressed application domains are homogeneously divided between commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS), distributed and embedded systems. Intensity of research showed a considerable increase in the last fourteen years. In addition to the analysis, this paper also synthesizes the available evidence, identifies open issues and points out areas that call for further research. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. HW/SW Co-design of the Instrument Control Unit for the Energetic Particle Detector on-board Solar Orbiter

ESA's medium-class Solar Orbiter mission is conceived to perform a close-up study of our Sun and its inner heliosphere to better understand the behaviour of our star. The mission will provide the clues to discover how the Sun creates and controls the solar wind and thereby affects the environments of all the planets. The spacecraft is equipped with a comprehensive suite of instruments. The Energetic Particle Detector (EPD) is one of the in-situ instruments on-board Solar Orbiter. EPD is composed of five different sensors, all of them sharing the Instrument Control Unit or ICU that is the sole interface with the spacecraft. This paper emphasises on how the hardware/software co-design approach can lead to a decrease in software complexity and highlights the versatility of the toolset that supports the development process. Following a model-driven engineering approach, these tools are capable of generating the high-level code of the software application, as well as of facilitating its configuration control and its deployment on the hardware platforms used in the different stages of the development process. Moreover, the use of the Leon2ViP virtual platform, with fault injection capabilities, allows an early software-before-hardware verification and validation and also a hardware software co-simulation. The adopted solutions reduce development time without compromising the whole process reliability that is essential to the EPD success. (C) 2013 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. component-based derivation of a parallel stiff ODE solver implemented in a cluster of computers

A component-based methodological approach to derive distributed implementations of parallel ODE solvers is proposed. The proposal is based on the incorporation of explicit constructs for performance polymorphism into a methodology to derive group parallel programs of numerical methods from SPMD modules. These constructs enable the structuring of the derivation process into clearly defined steps, each one associated with a different type of optimization. The approach makes possible to obtain a flexible tuning of a parallel ODE solver for several execution contexts and applications. Following this methodological approach, a relevant parallel numerical scheme for solving stiff ODES has been optimized and implemented on a PC cluster. This numerical scheme is obtained from a Radau IIA Implicit Runge-Kutta method and exhibits a high degree of potential parallelism. Several numerical experiments have been performed by using several test problems with different structural characteristics. These experiments show satisfactory speedup results.

component adaptation is widely recognised to be one of the crucial problems in component-based software Engineering (CBSE). We present here a formal methodology for the soft adaptation of components presenting mismatching interaction behaviour. The notions of access rights (associating components with the services they are allowed to use) and subservicing (providing alternative services in place of those requested by components lacking the required access rights) are exploited to feature a secure and flexible adaptation of third-party components. What makes service oriented requirements engineering challenging? A qualitative study

The focus of Service Oriented software development (SOSD) is to develop software by integrating reusable services to lower the required cost, time and effort of development and increase reusability, agility, quality and customer satisfaction. It has been recognised in the literature that SOSD faces various challenges especially in requirements engineering (RE). The objective of this study is to investigate these challenges of Service Oriented RE (SORE) from practitioners' perspectives in order to gain a deeper understanding of the related issues and to reveal potential gaps between research and practice in SORE. They present a qualitative study of the challenges and issues in SORE. The data were collected by conducting interviews with practitioners working in IT companies in Sydney, who have had substantial experience with service oriented software projects. The authors findings reveal that most of the challenges of SORE are similar to those that are faced during RE in traditional or component-based software development. According to the practitioners, the research and practice has made some advances in the technical direction but the human related issues in SORE have not been addressed adequately.

A component—based software Configuration Management Model and Its Supporting System

software configuration management (SCM) is an important key technology in software development. component-based software development (CBSD) is an emerging paradigm in software development. However, to apply CBSD effectively in real world practice,supporting SCM in CBSD needs to be further investigated. In this paper, the objects that need to be managed in CBSD is analyzed and a component-based SCM model is presented. In this model, components, as the integral logical constituents in a system, are managed as the basic configuration items in SCM, and the relationships between/among components are defined and maintained. based on this model, a configuration management system is implemented.

Customizing component-based software using component coordination model: A use-context driven approach toward role-based model

In this paper, we introduce a component coordination model (CCM) that is embedded into the applications during software architecture design. The CCM is driven by the use-context model, which directly reflects the role-based model that abstracts system behaviors as a computational organization comprising various role relationships. It then focuses on exposing the design of software components to be separated from their execution contexts. These separate concerns - computation, coordination, and policies imposed on a given use-context - form the principal concept of our approach. Finally, a case study using the proposed model has been demonstrated in order to provide the feasibility of the introduced approach.

End-to-end validation process for the INTA-Nanosat-1B Attitude Control System

This paper describes the end-to-end validation process for the Attitude Control Subsystem (ACS) of the satellite INTA-NanoSat-1B (NS-1B). This satellite was launched on July 2009 and it has been fully operative since then. The development of its ACS modules required an exhaustive integration and a system-level validation program. Some of the tests were centred on the validation of the drivers of sensors and actuators and were carried out over the flying model of the satellite. Others, more complex, constituted end-to-end tests where the concurrency of modules, the real-time control requirements and even the well-formedness of the telemetry data were verified. This work presents an incremental and highly automatised way for performing the ACS validation program based on two development suites and an end-to-end validation environment. The validation environment combines a Flat Satellite (FlatSat) configuration and a real-time emulator working in closed-loop. The FlatSat is built using the NS-1B Qualification Model (QM) hardware and it can run a complete version of the on-board software with the ACS modules fully integrated. The real-time emulator, running on an industrial PC, samples the actuation signals and emulates the sensors signals to close the control loop with the FlatSat. This validation environment constitutes a low-cost alternative to the classical three axes tilt table, with the advantage of being easily configured for working under specific orbit conditions, in accordance with any of the selected tests. The approach has been successfully applied to the NS-1B in order to verify different ACS modes under multiple orbit scenarios, providing an exhaustive coverage and reducing the risk of eventual errors during the satellite's lifetime. The strategy was applied also during the validation of the maintenance and reconfiguration procedures required once the satellite was launched. Improving interpretation of component-based systems quality through visualisation techniques

component-based software development is increasingly more commonplace and is widely used in the development of commercial software systems. This has led to the existence of several research works focusing on software component-based systems quality. The majority of this research proposes quality models focused on component-based systems in which different measures are proposed. In general, the result of assessing the measures is a number, which is necessary to determine the component-based system quality level. However, understanding and interpreting the data set is not an easy task. In order to facilitate the interpretation of results, this study selects and adapts a specific visual metaphor with which to show component-based systems quality. A tool has additionally been developed which permits the automatic assessment of the measures to be carried out. The tool also shows the results visually and proposes corrective actions through which to improve the level of quality. A case study is used to assess and to show the quality of a real-world component-based software system in a graphic manner.
