Systems are expected to evolve during their service life in order to cope with changes of various natures, ranging from fluctuations in available resources to additional features requested by users. For dependable embedded systems, the challenge is even greater, as evolution must not impair dependability attributes. Resilient computing implies maintaining dependability properties when facing changes. Resilience encompasses several aspects, among which evolvability, i.e., the capacity of a system to evolve during its service life. In this paper, we discuss the evolution of systems with respect to their dependability mechanisms, and show how such mechanisms can evolve accordingly. From a component-based approach that enables to clarify the concepts, the process and the techniques to be used to address resilient computing, in particular regarding the adaptation of fault tolerance (or safety) mechanisms, we show how Adaptive Fault Tolerance (AFT) can be implemented with ROS. Beyond implementation, we draw the lessons learned from this work and discuss the limits of this runtime support to implement such resilient computing features in embedded systems.

A large majority of existing software development approaches in the vehicle industrial domain have a limited or no modeling support to fully reuse legacy nodes at the highest abstraction, called the vehicle level. In this paper, we introduce a new technique for model- and component-based development of vehicular distributed embedded systems at the vehicle level. The proposed technique supports not only modeling of crude nodes or Electronic Control Units but also modeling of legacy nodes whose software architectures can be partially or completely reused. As a proof of concept, we implement the modeling technique in an industrial model, the Rubus component Model. In order to show the usability of our approach, we model a vehicular application using the extended component model and its tool suite.

component-based software engineering has achieved wide acceptance in the domain of software engineering by improving productivity, reusability and composition. This success has also encouraged the emergence of a plethora of component models. Nevertheless, even if the abstract models of most of lightweight component models are quite similar, their programming models can still differ a lot. This drawback limits the reuse and composition of components implemented using different programming models. The contribution of this article is to introduce Fraclet as a programming model common to several lightweight component models. This programming model is presented as an annotation framework, which allows the developer to annotate the program code with the elements of the abstract component model. Then, using a generative approach, the annotated program code is completed according to the programming model of the component model to be supported by the component runtime environment. This article shows that this annotation framework provides a significant simplification of the program code by removing all dependencies on the component model interfaces. These benefits are illustrated with the Fractal and OpenCOM component models.

component-oriented software has become a useful tool to build larger and more complex systems by describing the application in terms of encapsulated, loosely coupled entities called components. At the same time, asynchronous programming patterns allow for the development of efficient distributed applications. While several component models and frameworks have been proposed, most of them tightly integrate the component model with the middleware they run upon. This intertwining is generally implicit and not discussed, leading to entangled, hard to maintain code. This article describes our efforts in the development of the GCM/ProActive framework for providing distributed and adaptable autonomous components. GCM/ProActive integrates a component model designed for execution on large-scale environments, with a programming model based on active objects allowing a high degree of distribution and concurrency. This new integrated model provides a more powerful development, composition, and execution environment than other distributed component frameworks. We illustrate that GCM/ProActive is particularly adapted to the programming of autonomic component systems, and to the integration into a service-oriented environment. In the participatory sensing model, humans may serve as opportunistic sensors and flexible actuators while also consuming sensing services. Integrating humans into sensing systems has the potential to increase scale and reduce costs. However, contemporary participatory sensing software provides poor consideration of user dynamism, which includes: mobility across networks, mobility across devices and context-awareness. To address these limitations we propose the User component and User Bindings. The former represents the user as a first class reconfigurable element of evolving and shared participatory sensing platforms. The latter allows the middleware to support multiple communications channels including Online Social Networks (OSN) to connect users with sensing applications. Our approach increases user participation, reduces out-of-context interactions and only consumes a limited amount of energy by sharing context information between applications. We support these claims by evaluating our approach on a two weeks experiment in which three participants take part in three concurrent participatory applications.

A code generator systematically transforms compact models to detailed code. Today, code generation is regarded as an integral part of model-driven development (MDD). Despite its relevance, the development of code generators is an inherently complex task and common methodologies and architectures are lacking. Additionally, reuse and extension of existing code generators only exist on individual parts. A systematic development and reuse based on a code generator product line is still in its infancy. Thus, the aim of this paper is to identify the mechanism necessary for a code generator product line by (a) analyzing the common product line development approach and (b) mapping those to a code generator specific infrastructure. As a first step towards realizing a code generator product line infrastructure, we present a component-based implementation approach based on ideas of variability-aware module systems and point out further research challenges.

The growing complexity of modern real-time embedded systems makes component-based software engineering (CBSE) technology more desirable. Although many ideas have been proposed for building component-based real-time embedded software, techniques for testing component-based real-time systems have not been well developed. A typical component-based embedded system consists of multiple user tasks, as well as hardware, middleware and software layers. Interaction problems between different components can cause system failures in field applications. The challenges not only come from the integration of multiple components through their interfaces, but also include the composition of extra-functional properties. A real-time embedded system needs to achieve its functionality under the constraints caused by its extra-functional properties. Since the time at which the system actions take place is important, correct functional behavior with regard to timing properties is essential to real-time embedded systems. Therefore, this research is intended to help detect both functional and temporal faults during the integration of component-based real-time embedded software. This dissertation presents a test model that depicts both inter-component and intra-component relationships in component-based real-time embedded software and identifies key test elements. The test model is realized using a family of novel graph-based test models in which not only are the functional interactions and the dependence relationships illustrated, but also the time-dependent interaction among components, are illustrated. Time dependent behavior is modelled by means of timers and clocks. I use the graph-based test model to develop a novel family of test adequacy criteria that help generate effective test cases. I also present new algorithms to facilitate automate generation of the test cases. In an embedded system, extra-functional requirements are as important as functional requirements. Correct functional behavior with regard to timing properties is essential to real-time embedded system. This paper focuses on real-time requirements instead of all extra-functional requirements. Therefore, they should be considered while testing embedded software behavior. This paper addresses problems that emerge during the integration of component-based real-time embedded software.
