A component-based development process for trustworthy systems

This paper introduces a new process for a rigorous component-centered development of trustworthy systems. The rationale for our perspective of the process is two-fold. The activities prescribed in a conventional software engineering development process are neither suitable nor sufficient for developing component-based systems. component-based development methods that are currently practised do not support the explicit specification of trustworthiness properties, and are not based on rigorous principles. Hence they are not suitable for developing trustworthy systems. Trustworthiness is regarded as a composite nonfunctional property comprising the four attributes safety, security, availability, and reliability. They must be rigorously defined for components and systems composed from them. It is essential that the process enforces a direct evidence of trustworthiness in the systems that are developed following the process. Consequently, the development process, in addition to being reuse-oriented, component-oriented, and rigorous in all phases of the system lifecycle, should maintain the chain of evidence that the trustworthiness properties are preserved in every activity of every phase of system development. The proposed process includes several parallel interrelated tracks including component development, component assessment, component reuse, and component-based system development and prescribes specific activities and tools for ensuring trustworthiness in all activities. component-based software development (CBD) is an architecture-centric process that relies on the integration of pre-fabricated software components to construct systems. Architecture plays a central in CBD by providing a means to document system development, verify the integrity and adequacy of component compositions, and to manage change. Architectural analysis can provide an effective and relatively low-cost mechanism for checking design constraints and improving the quality of a component-based system. Architecture description languages (ADLs) offer a potential mechanism for supporting architectural analysis in CBD. However, current ADLs vary markedly in their modelling notations, the kinds of entities they describe, the properties and relationships they express about the entities, and the analysis that may be conducted on the entities. This paper presents iXML ADL, a language-independent scenario-driven architecture description language, to support architecture analysis in CBD.

CoolBOT is a C++ distributed component-based programming framework for robotics. A system can be seen as a distributed network of software components interconnected by port connections where system behavior emerges from the interaction and independent execution of the components integrating the system. Recently we have endowed CoolHOT with two new types of software components: views and probes. On one side, in order to separate and decouple robot control from graphical displays, we have introduced the concept of view as an integrable, composite and reusable graphical interface available for CoolBOT system integrators and developers. On the other side, probes have been devised as interfaces for interoperability with non CoolBOT software.

With the continuous emergence of smart portable devices, like TabletPC or smartphones, crowdsensing is becoming an active research topic. While exploiting the wisdom of the crowd provides huge benefits to pervasive applications, one of the key challenges remains to motivate people to contribute to flow of data by sharing some of the capabilities of their device. In this paper, we therefore report on the APISENSE platform, a participative platform that help scientists to collect realistic datasets from a population of voluntary participants. More specifically, we provide a preliminary investigation of how user incentives can be integrated in such a platform to encourage people to contribute while leaving enough flexibility to the scientist for choosing the model that fits their requirements.

Adaptive systems are systems capable of adapting their behaviour to changes in their environment. Creating such systems is not an easy task, however. Especially, creating such a system as one monolithic software component taking all eventualities and environments into account bears the risk of bad system design. To circumvent this risk, an adaptive system can be composed from partial solutions handling only a subset of all possible circumstances and environments. Then, the system can be changed through reconfigurations as the environment evolves. In this paper, we propose an approach for the verification of systems using reconfiguration as means of adaptation. For the specification of such systems and their components we introduce REMITL which is based on Metric Interval Temporal Logic (MITL) and allows to express connectivity of components. based on an example from the domain of pervasive computing, we show how a system undergoing reconfigurations can be verified to satisfy a global assume-guarantee contract expressed as a pair of REMITL formulas. A policy-based publish/subscribe middleware for sense-and-react applications

With the inclusion of actuators on wireless nodes, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are starting to change from sense-and-report platforms to sense-and-react platforms. Applications for such platforms are characterised by actuator nodes that are able to react to data collected by sensor nodes. Sensor and actuator nodes use a variety of interactions, for example, intra-node, inter-node (1-hop to n-hop), and global (all nodes). As a result, the functionality that coordinates the activities of the different nodes towards common goals has to be efficiently distributed in the WSN itself. In addition, multiple sense-and-react applications are being deployed within the same WSN, with each application characterised by different requirements and constraints. The design and implementation of these applications is becoming an increasingly complex task that would benefit from new approaches. In this article, we describe a novel middleware that separates the interaction behaviour of sense-and-react WSN applications from the components that implement the basic functionalities (sensing, reacting, computation, storage). This is achieved using policies that govern the interaction behaviour of sense-and-react WSN applications. The middleware is composed of a Policy Manager, a Publish/Subscribe Broker, and a set of Extensions that reside on each node. The broker manages subscription information, while extensions provide mechanisms orthogonal to the publish/subscribe core including diffusion protocols, data communication protocols, and data encryption. We conduct a detailed evaluation of the performance of our framework and show that the framework is close to TinyOS in performance but leads to more explicit and flexible application designs. We present extensions to the existing industrial component model Rubus component Model (RCM). By introducing special purpose components to encapsulate and abstract the communication protocols in distributed embedded systems we allow use of legacy nodes and legacy protocols in a component-based and model-based software engineering environment. With the addition of these components, RCM will be able to support state-of-the-practice development processes of distributed embedded systems where communication rules are defined early in the development process. The proposed extension also allows model-based and component-based development of new nodes that are deployed in the legacy systems that use predefined communication rules. We also demonstrate how an end-to-end timing model can be extracted from a distributed embedded system modeled with extended RCM. The extracted model is then used to perform an end-to-end timing analysis that we implemented in the Rubus Analysis Framework.

The state of the art in distributed simulation is described and the current challenge and requirement for distributed simulation are discussed. A simulation framework based on service-oriented architecture is proposed for its virtues in achieving simulation composability. Three component-based software engineering technologies for constructing service-oriented simulation platform are compared. As a case, multi-tier model architecture for navy warfare simulation is proposed and the simulation platform is established according to Java EE/EJB specification. The implementation and experiment of this simulation platform are expatiated in details.

A validation process for integrated model-based methodology for component-based embedded real-time software with a profile is presented in this paper. Unified Modeling Language for Modeling and Analysis Real-Time and Embedded System, as a newly developed profile has been introduced to overcome problems in previous profiles. Nevertheless, a sound and systematic methodology is needed in order to tackle complexity problems that arose. The objective of this paper is to validate the integrated profile and a selected component-based methodology component model for satisfying embedded real-time software requirements, thus helping engineers to model their system, enhancing the structure and component modeling. For that, this paper described a component model meta-model validation process using quality matching for the integration process, involving a profile and a methodology. Nevertheless, this paper focused more towards the validation of the integrated component model before can be implemented on Embedded Real-Time software development, whereby the proposed integration component model is applied on a case study to show its enhancements. The integration result will support to solve complexity whereby the profile is used to solve the lack of specific modeling language notation for embedded real-time system and the method can provide a systematical software process.
