It is difficult to imagine that the statistical analysis of compositional data has been a major issue of concern for more than 100 years. It is even more difficult to realize that so many statisticians and users of statistics are unaware of the particular problems affecting compositional data, as well as their solutions. The issue of ``spurious correlation'', as the situation was phrased by Karl Pearson back in 1897, affects all data that measures parts of some whole, such as percentages, proportions, ppm and ppb. Such measurements are present in all fields of science, ranging from geology, biology, environmental sciences, forensic sciences, medicine and hydrology. This book presents the history and development of compositional data analysis along with Aitchison's log-ratio approach. compositional data analysis describes the state of the art both in theoretical fields as well as applications in the different fields of science. IntroductionThe relationship between 24-h movement behaviours (i.e. sleep, sedentary behaviour and physical activity) and adiposity in preschoolers remains unclear. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the associations between 24-h movement behaviours and adiposity in preschoolers making use of compositional data analysis (CoDA).MethodsAustralian preschoolers (3-5 years) from the Early Start Baseline Study wore an ActiGraph accelerometer to assess sedentary behaviour (SB), light physical activity (LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Their weight and height were measured using standardized protocols and converted to Body Mass Index (BMI) z-scores using the World Health Organisation growth references. Their parents completed a questionnaire to assess their level of education and the child's sleep duration, age and sex. CoDA was employed to investigate the association between 24-h movement behaviours and adiposity in *** study included 169 preschoolers and their overall 24-h movement behaviour composition was associated with BMI z-scores (F = 5.02, p = 0.002). When examining the association between each movement behaviour relative to the others and BMI z-scores, we observed a statistically significant favourable association for sleep (p = 0.025) and unfavourable association for MVPA (p = 0.010), but not for the other behaviours. As such, reallocating 10 min from sleep or from MVPA, proportionally to all other behaviours was associated with a difference of + 0.031 (95%CI = 0.004,0.06) and -0.085 (95%CI = -0.15,-0.02) in BMI z-score, *** the association between more time spent in MVPA and higher BMI z-scores, promoting a balanced amount of time in each 24-h movement behaviour-more MVPA, less sedentary time, and sufficient sleep-remains important for overall health. Association between 24-hour movement behavior and depression in college students: A compositional data analysis

Background: Evidence strongly suggests that moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) can help reduce symptoms of depression. However, the relationship between 24-h movement behaviors and depressive symptoms, as well as the potential substitution effects between different behaviors, remains unclear. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate how the time spent in one behavior relative to others is associated with depressive symptoms. Methods: The study recruited 366 participants, who had their levels of MVPA, light PA (LPA), and sedentary behavior (SB) recorded using tri-axial accelerometers over 7 consecutive days. Participants also self-reported their sleep duration (SLP). Depression scores were measured using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Using compositional linear regression, the study explored the connections between different compositions of time spent in movement behaviors and depression symptom scores. Results: Spending more time on LPA and MVPA relative to other behaviors were associated with lower depression scores, whereas a higher proportion of SB relative to other activities was linked to increased depression scores. Reallocating time spent on SB to LPA and MVPA was associated with decreased depression scores. Limitation: This study is a cross-sectional research design, and causality cannot be inferred. In addition, the sampling method of this study may have imposed some limitations on the representativeness of the sample. Further longitudinal studies could be conducted by selecting a large, representative sample. Conclusion: Within the spectrum of 24-h movement behaviors, increasing the duration of LPA and MVPA emerges as advantageous for reducing depression scores, suggesting a potential benefit in reallocating SB to PA, especially MVPA.

Longitudinal Associations Between Movement Behaviours and Development Among Infants Using compositional data analysis

Background: The study examined the longitudinal associations of sleep time, restrained time, back time and tummy time with development in a sample of infants using compositional data analysis. Methods: Participants were a subsample of 93 parent-infant dyads from the Early Movers project in Edmonton, Canada. Parents completed a 3-day time-use diary at 2, 4 and 6 months of age. Time spent in four mutually exclusive movement behaviours were calculated representing sleep (i.e., sleep time), sedentary behaviour (i.e., restrained time and back time) and physical activity (i.e., tummy time). Communication, fine motor, gross motor, personal-social, problem solving and total development were measured at 2, 4 and 6 months of age with the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3). Gross motor development was also measured by a physiotherapist using the Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) at 6 months. The age six major gross motor milestones (i.e., independent sitting, crawling, assisted standing, assisted walking, independent standing, independent walking) were achieved according to World Health Organization criteria, in the first 18 months of life, were calculated. Results: The composition of movement behaviours across time points was significantly associated with: ASQ-3 gross motor, problem solving and total development scores over time, total and percentile AIMS scores at 6 months and independent standing and walking milestones (ilr model p-value: < 0.001-0.045;model R2: 0.02-0.15). More sleep time or tummy time relative to other movement behaviours was associated with more advanced development and earlier achievement of some milestones. The opposite was observed for back time. Associations with restrained time were mixed. The optimal movement behaviour durations (minutes/day) for AIMS and WHO milestone outcomes, were 38-43 of tummy time, 51-54 of back time, 43-96 of restrained time and 845-900 of sleep time. Association between daily movement behaviors and optimal physical fitness of university students: a compositional data analysis

Objective This study investigates the relationship between movement behaviors and physical fitness (PF) in university students, and based on the top 5% of model-predicted outcomes for PF to determine the optimal movement behaviors balance. Methods A total of 463 university students aged 15-24 years from Jinhua City wore accelerometers to measure moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), light-intensity physical activity (LPA), and sedentary behavior (SB). Sleep (SLP) was self-reported. The body mass index (BMI), forced vital capacity (FVC), 50-meter dash, standing long jump, sit-and-reach, sit-ups (female), pull-ups (male), 800-meter run (female), and 1000-meter run (male) were used as indicators to assess the physical fitness of university students. Regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between movement behaviors and PF. All possible movement component combinations were investigated to determine the best correlation (top 5%) with each outcome. Results For males, SB (beta = 5.05, p < 0.05) was significantly correlated with an increase in BMI. MVPA was significantly correlated with improvements in BMI (beta = -1.75, p < 0.05), FVC (beta = 494.21, p < 0.05), and endurance qualities (beta = -25.77, p < 0.05). For females, MVPA was significantly correlated with improvements in BMI (beta = -1.03, p < 0.05), FVC (beta = 176.05, p < 0.05), speed capability (beta = -0.26, p < 0.05), and endurance qualities (beta = -16.38, p < 0.05). LPA was associated with improvements in endurance qualities (beta = -24.10, p < 0.05). SB was significantly correlated with a decline in endurance qualities (beta = 24.25, p < 0.05). The average (range) optimal combination of time use was as follows: For males, MVPA = 142 min/day, SB = 534 min/day, LPA = 295 min/day, and SLP = 469 min/day. The relationship between device-measured movement behaviors and optimal mental health in Chinese youth: A compositional data analysis

Background: This study explores the relationship between movement behaviors and mental health indicators (depression, anxiety, and perceived stress) in youth, aiming to identify optimal balance of movement behaviors for mental health benefits. Methods: 327 participants aged 17-24years wore accelerometers for 7 consecutive days to measure moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), light physical activity (LPA), and sedentary behavior (SB). Sleep (SLP) was self-reported. Depression, anxiety, and perceived stress were assessed using self-report questionnaires. compositional data analysis examined the relationship between movement behaviors and mental health indicators. Optimal time-use were identified by investigating all possible 24-h combinations associated with the best 5% of outcomes. Results: More SB time was associated with higher scores for depression (b = 6.34, p < 0.05), anxiety (b = 7.94, p < 0.05), and perceived stress (b = 5.14, p < 0.05). More MVPA time was associated with lower scores for depression (b = -2.24, p < 0.05) and perceived stress scores (b = -1.56, p < 0.05). Substituting 30 min of SB with LPA or MVPA improved depression and perceived stress, while substituting SB with LPA reduced anxiety. Optimal time-use compositions were 503 min for sleep, 503 min for sedentary, 322 min for LPA, and 112 min for MVPA. Conclusion: This study emphasizes the association between movement behaviors and mental health in youth. Reducing sedentary time and increasing MVPA were linked to better mental health. Achieving optimal mental health requires balancing time spent on various daily activities, minimizing sedentary behavior, and maximizing time allocated to MVPA whenever possible.

Identifying lithic production and distribution networks in flint and chert extraction areas is a key issue for better understanding of Neolithic societies. Determining artefact provenance by petrographic characterisation of flint and chert facies is generally efficient, but this method may sometimes be limited by factors such as the opaque white patina that covers many artefacts. This study presents a protocol for geochemical analysis using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-tandem mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS/MS), compositional data analysis (CoDA), and supervised machine learning (Linear Discriminant analysis, LDA, Random Forest Leave-One-Out, RFLOO) to complement the petrographic determination of flint and chert sources. The protocol sought to discriminate siliceous raw material exploited in the Saint-Gond Marshes region (SGM;Marne, France) from the Campanian (Ca;Late Cretaceous) and the Bartonian (Ba;Eocene), and flint raw material exploited in the Pays d'Othe region (PO;Aube, France) from the Coniacian (Co;Late Cretaceous). We tested the discrimination potential of geochemical signatures at different spatial (inter- and intra-regional) and stratigraphic scales (Late Cretaceous vs Eocene;Coniacian vs Campanian), formed in different environments (marine vs lacustrine, or within the same sedimentary basin) on a corpus of 52 samples from 9 sites. Our results demonstrate that all three groups are clearly discriminated, as are all but one of the 9 sampling sites. The CoDA procedure transforms raw data into log-ratios discriminated by LDA and RFLOO: the results obtained are more robust than those obtained from the unprocessed raw data. Discrimination is linked to the geochemical and diagenetic processes involved in the formation of flint and chert nodules. Flints and cherts formed in different palaeo-environments will possess distinctive geochemical signatures. Isometric log ratios of proportions of major ions, derived from intuitive sequential binary partitions, are used to characterize hydrochemical variability within and between coal seam gas (CSG) and surrounding aquifers in a number of sedimentary basins in the USA and Australia. These isometric log ratios are the coordinates corresponding to an orthonormal basis in the sample space (the simplex). The characteristic proportions of ions, as described by linear models of isometric log ratios, can be used for a mathematical-descriptive classification of water types. This is a more informative and robust method of describing water types than simply classifying a water type based on the dominant ions. The approach allows (a) compositional distinctions between very similar water types to be made and (b) large data sets with a high degree of variability to be rapidly assessed with respect to particular relationships/compositions that are of interest. A major advantage of these techniques is that major and minor ion components can be comprehensively assessed and subtle processeswhich may be masked by conventional techniques such as Stiff diagrams, Piper plots, and classic ion ratioscan be highlighted. Results show that while all CSG groundwaters are dominated by Na, HCO3, and Cl ions, the proportions of other ions indicate they can evolve via different means and the particular proportions of ions within total or subcompositions can be unique to particular basins. Using isometric log ratios, subtle differences in the behavior of Na, K, and Cl between CSG water types and very similar Na-HCO3 water types in adjacent aquifers are also described. A complementary pair of isometric log ratios, derived from a geochemically-intuitive sequential binary partition that is designed to reflect compositional variability within and between CSG groundwater, is proposed. Geochemical data are typically reported as compositions, in the form of some proportions such as weight percents, parts per million, etc., subject to a constant sum (e.g. 100%, 1,000,000 ppm). This latter implies that such data are "closed";that is, for a composition of D-components, only D - 1 components are required. The statistical analysis of compositional data has been a major issue for more than 100 years. The problem of spurious correlation, introduced by Karl Pearson in 1897, affects all data measuring parts of some whole, which are by definition, constrained;and such type of measurements are present in all fields of geochemical research. The use of the log-ratio transform was introduced by John Aitchison to overcome these constraints by opening the data into the real number space, within which standard statistical methods can be applied. However, many statisticians and users of statistics in the field of geochemistry are unaware of the problems affecting compositional data, as well as solutions that overcome these problems. A look into the ISI Web of Science and Scopus databases shows that most papers where compositional data are the core of a geochemical research continue to ignore methods to correctly manage constrained data. A key question is how we can demonstrate that the interpretation of the behaviour of chemical species in natural environment and in geochemical processes is improved when the compositional constraint of geochemical data is taken into account through the use of new methods. In order to achieve this aim, this special issue of the Journal of Geochemical Exploration focuses on the correct statistical analysis of compositional data. Applications in exploration, monitoring and environments by considering several geological matrices are presented and discussed illustrating that several paths can be followed to understand how geochemical processes work. Iron oxide copper-gold (IOCG) systems are characterized by a wide range of hydrothermal alteration types that can indiscriminately and intensively replace their host rocks over areas of > 100 km(2). Element mobility and chemical changes associated with alteration can be of a magnitude beyond that of many other types of hydrothermal systems, and may also affect normally immobile elements. Principal component analysis of whole-rock geochemical data on hydrothermally altered samples coming from the Great Bear magmatic zone IOCG systems has enabled the characterization of sodic, calcic-iron, to high to low temperature potassic-iron and potassic alteration types of IOCG systems. Results show that potassic and potassic-iron alteration features are enriched in K, Al, Ba, Si, Rb, Zr, Ta, Nb, Th and U, with potassic-iron alteration being richer in Fe. In contrast, calcic-iron alteration is enriched in Ca, Fe, Mn, Mg, Zn, Ni and Co. These compositional variations can be portrayed by IOCG alteration index and discriminant diagrams. Combined with an IOCG alteration sequencing model, the lithogeochemical footprint of IOCG systems provides a useful tool to assess the potential fertility and maturity of IOCG systems and ultimately a vector towards ore zones during exploration
