Background: Few studies have explored the relationship between macronutrient intake and sleep outcomesusing daily data from mobile apps. Objective: This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the associations between macronutrients, dietary components, and sleep parameters, considering their interdependencies. Methods: We analyzed data from 4825 users of the Pok & eacute;mon Sleep and Asken smartphone apps, each used for at least 7 days to record objective sleep parameters and dietary components, respectively. Multivariable regression explored the associations between quartiles of macronutrients (protein;carbohydrate;and total fat, including saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fats), dietary components (sodium, potassium, dietary fiber, and sodium-to-potassium ratio), and sleep variables (total sleep time [TST],sleep latency [SL], and percentageofwakefulness after sleep onset[%WASO]). Thelowestintakegroupwasthereference. compositional data analysis accounted for macronutrient interdependencies. Models were adjusted for age, sex, and BMI. Results: Greater protein intake was associated with longer TST in the third (+0.17, 95% CI 0.09-0.26 h) and fourth (+0.18, 95% CI 0.09-0.27 h) quartiles. In contrast, greater fat intake was linked to shorter TST in the third (-0.11, 95% CI -0.20 to -0.27 h) and fourth (-0.16, 95% CI -0.25 to -0.07 h) quartiles. Greater carbohydrate intake was associated with shorter %WASO in thethird (-0.82%, 95% CI -1.37% to -0.26%) and fourth (-0.57%, 95% CI -1.13% to -0.01%) quartiles, whilegreaterfat intake was linked to longer %WASO in the fourth quartile (+0.62%, 95% CI 0.06%-1.18%). Treatment of table olives with 1-methylcyclopropene, heat shock, and dimethyl dicarbonate impacts the microbial fermentation profile and composition of the fruit biofilm

In this study, we used an experimental design to assess the influence of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), a mild heat shock, and dimethyl dicarbonate (DMDC) on microbial evolution in brines and the biofilm composition of Spanish-style and naturally fermented table olives. data were statistically analyzed using classical and compositional data analysis (CoDA). In the brines, the natural processing style raised the presence of yeast/fungi, while heat shock increased the populations of lactic acid bacteria populations. The interaction among heat shock, natural fermentation, and DMDC favored the survival of Enterobacteriaceae. Concerning biofilms, the meta- taxonomic analysis showed that the five most frequently detected bacterial genera were Lactiplantibacillus (66.79%), Secundilactobacillus (15.12%), Pediococcus (7.50%), Marinilactibacillus (4.92%), and Enterobacter (3.88%), while most common fungal genera were Saccharomyces (63.13%), Bannoa (11.49%), Candida (8.34%), Wickerhamomyces (4.15%), and Kluyveromyces (2.04%). Treatments also affected microbial diversity in biofilms. Adding DMDC significantly reduced the number of bacterial taxa compared to untreated olives. Additionally, the Spanish-style processing resulted in lower bacterial diversity. In contrast, fungi displayed an opposite trend, with the highest similarity found in naturally processed olives. CoDA revealed that the bacterial genera Marinilactibacillus and Lactiplantibacillus were characteristic of Spanish-style olives, while Secundilactobacillus and Pediococcus were associated with naturally processed olives. For fungi, Saccharomyces was related to both Spanish-style and naturally processed olives. The results indicate that the treatments influenced bacterial and fungal populations in brines and olive biofilms and their relationships. These effects may help modulate/control the microbial evolution during olive fermentation.

A compositional analysis of time spent in physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep with quality of life in Canadian older adults aged 65 years and above: findings from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging

Associations between daily time spent in physical activity (PA), sedentary behaviour (SB), and sleep (collectively referred to as "movement behaviour") and quality of life (QOL) are typically studied without considering they are compositional, codependant variables. Study objectives were to use compositional data analysis to: (1) examine the relationship between movement behaviour composition and QOL, (2) estimate the degree to which changing time spent in any movement behaviour within the movement behaviour composition is associated with QOL. 7918 older Canadian adults >= 65 years of age from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging were studied using a quasi-longitudinal study design. Daily time spent in PA and SB were derived from self-reported Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly responses. Nighttime sleep was self-reported separately. QOL was assessed through the Satisfaction with Life Scale. Movement behaviour composition was significantly associated with QOL. Relative time spent in SB was negatively associated with QOL (HR = 0.89 (95% CI: 0.86-0.93)). Relative time spent in sleep was positively associated with QOL (HR =1.10 (95% CI: 1.05-1.16)). Time displacement estimates revealed that greatest change in QOL occurred when time spent in PA was decreased and replaced with SB (HR = 0.96 (95% CI: 0.92-0.99) for 45 min/day displacement). Using compositional data analysis is advantageous because it shows how reduction in SB and increase in PA and sleep can lead to improvements in QOL for older Canadian adults.

BackgroundStudies investigating the associations of 24-h movement behaviours (including moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA), light-intensity PA (LPA), sedentary time (ST) and sleep) with depressive symptoms are scarce. It is also unclear whether possible associations differ between urban and rural residents. Hence, we aimed to investigate these associations in a population-based sample of middle-aged Finnish *** study population consisted of 4295 adults, aged 46 years, from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966. The participants wore a hip-worn accelerometer for 14 days. Time spent in sedentary, LPA and MVPA was obtained from accelerometer data and then combined with self-reported sleep duration to obtain the 24-h composition. The residential environment was classified as urban or rural based on the participants' home addresses. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Multivariable adjusted regression analysis using a compositional data analysis approach based on isometric log-ratio transformation was used to determine the associations between movement behaviours and depressive symptoms in urban and rural residential *** 24-h movement behaviour composition was significantly associated with the BDI-II score both in urban and rural residential environment. More time spent in sleep relative to other behaviours was associated with lower BDI-II score in rural residential environments. More time spent in ST among urban residents and in LPA among rural residents was associated with higher BDI-II scores. When modelling pairwise reallocations of time, more MVPA or more sleep at the expense of LPA or ST was associated with lower BDI-II score among rural residents. Background: Although movement behaviors are linked to mortality risk, few studies investigated the associations between daily steps and movement behaviors and all-cause mortality in low- and middle-income countries. Objective: We investigated associations of step count, total activity volume, moderate-and-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), light-intensity physical activity (LPA), sedentary behavior, sleep duration, and various isotemporal substitutions with all-cause mortality in middle-aged and older Brazilian adults. Methods: ELSA-Brasil cohort study 3rd wave (2017-2019) participants wore an ActiGraph wGT3X-BT on the waist for seven days and completed a sleep diary. We followed participants to January 1st, 2024. Using Cox regression models, we estimated adjusted hazard ratios (HR). Using compositional data analysis, we examined changes in mortality associated with isotemporal substitutions. Results: Overall, 8832 participants (55.8 % female, age 59.2 +/- 8.6) were followed for a median of 5.43 personyears (total 46,793.2), with 216 deaths. All behaviors except sleep showed curvilinear associations with mortality. Mortality declined with a plateauing effect at a daily total activity volume of 15.9 millii-g (HR 0.36, reference 7.83), 7300 steps (HR 0.48, reference 3881), 49.4 MVPA minutes (HR 0.28, reference 11.34), and 245.8 LPA minutes (HR 0.67, reference 135.6). Engaging in less than 842 sedentary behavior minutes/day was linked with an HR of 0.67. Reallocating 10 daily minutes from other behaviors to MVPA showed a consistent 10 % decrease in mortality. Conclusion: In Brazilian adults, step count, total activity volume, MVPA, LPA, and sedentary behavior were nonlinearly associated with lower mortality. Reallocating any time from other behaviors to MVPA predicted lower mortality.

A comparison of methods for analysing compositional data with fixed and variable totals: a simulation study using the examples of time-use and dietary data

Backgroundcompositional data comprise the parts of a 'whole' (or 'total'), which sum to that 'whole'. The 'whole' may vary between units of analyses, or it may be fixed (constant). For example, total energy intake (a variable total) is the sum of intake from all foods or macronutrients. Total time in a day (a fixed total) is the sum of time spent engaging in various activities. There exist different approaches to analysing compositional data, such as the isocaloric or isotemporal model, ratio variables, and compositional data analysis (CoDA). Although the performance of the different approaches has been compared previously, this has only been conducted in real data. Since the true relationships are unknown in real data, it is difficult to compare model performance in estimating a known effect. We use data simulations of different parametric relationships, to explore and demonstrate the performance of each approach under various possible *** simulated physical activity time-use and dietary data as examples of compositional data with fixed and variable totals, respectively, using different parametric relationships between the compositional components and the outcome (fasting plasma glucose): linear, log2, and isometric log-ratios. We evaluated the performance of a range of generalised linear and additive models as well as CoDA, in estimating a 1-unit and either 10-unit (for physical activity) or 100-unit (for dietary data) reallocations under each parametric scenario. We simulated 10,000 datasets with 1,000 observations in *** performance of each approach to analysing compositional data depends on how closely its parameterisation matches the true data generating process. Overall, we demonstrated that the consequences of using an incorrect parameterisation (e.g. using CoDA when the true relationship is linear) are more severe for larger reallocations (e.g. 10-min or 100-kcal) than for 1-unit reallocations. INTRODUCTION: Traditional multivariate methods for neuroimaging studies overlook the interdependent relationship between brain features. This study addresses this gap by analyzing relative brain volumetric patterns to capture how Alzheimer's disease (AD) and genetics influence brain structure along the disease continuum. METHODS: This study analyzed data from participants across the AD continuum from the Alzheimer's and Families (ALFA) and Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) studies. compositional data analysis (CoDA) was exploited to examine relative brain volumetric variations that (1) were linked to different AD stages compared to cognitively unimpaired amyloid-beta-negative (CU A-) individuals and (2) varied by AD genetic risk. RESULTS: Disease stage-specific compositional brain scores were identified, differentiating CU A- individuals from those in more advanced stages. Genetic risk-stratified models revealed a broader genetic landscape affecting brain morphology in AD, beyond the well-known apolipoprotein E epsilon 4 allele. DISCUSSION: CoDA emerges as an alternative multivariate framework to deepen understanding of AD-related structural changes and support targeted interventions for those at higher genetic risk. Highlights compositional data analysis (CoDA) revealed the relative variation of brain region volumes, captured in compositional brain scores, capable of discerning between cognitively unimpaired amyloid-beta-negative individuals and subjects within other disease-stage groups along the Alzheimer's disease (AD) continuum. CoDA also uncovered the genetic vulnerability of specific brain regions at each stage of the disease along the continuum. CoDA is capable of integrating magnetic resonance imaging data from two different cohorts without stringent requirements for harmonization. Addressing the compositional character of international humanitarian aid delivery in humanitarian hubs: Case applied to CLRAH

The Regional Logistics Centre for Humanitarian Assistance (CLRAH, for its acronym in Spanish), located in Panama, is the first humanitarian hub dedicated to delivering international humanitarian aid to Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). This study analyses the trends in the delivery of humanitarian assistance from CLRAH between 2017 and 2021. A distinguishing feature of humanitarian aid delivery is the compositional nature of its indicators, which corresponds to the multidimensionality of the strategies adopted to ensure the timely delivery of aid. Within this framework, additive log-ratio, centered log-ratio, and isometric log-ratio transformations were used to assess humanitarian aid delivery from a compositional approach. The findings highlight the growing importance of health supplies and shelter in recent years, as well as the role of air and maritime transport in facilitating humanitarian aid delivery. Cuba, Venezuela, and Haiti stand out among the most aided countries over the analysed period. Additionally, insecurity and corruption were identified as two social problems in recipient countries that should be taken into account in the delivery of humanitarian aid from the CLRAH to LAC. compositional data analysis proves more effective in managing the compositional indicators of CLRAH humanitarian aid delivery than traditional raw data modeling techniques. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to address the importance of managing indicators in a humanitarian centre using the compositional data analysis approach.

Gihawi et al. (mBio 14:e01607-23, 2023, https://***/10.1128/mbio.01607-23) argued that the analysis of tumor-associated microbiome data by Poore et al. (Nature 579:567-574, 2020, https://***/10.1038/s41586-020-2095-1) is invalid because features that were originally very sparse (genera with mostly zero read counts) became associated with the phenotype following batch correction. Here, we examine whether such an observation should necessarily indicate issues with processing or machine learning pipelines. We show counterexamples using the centered log ratio (CLR) transformation, which is often used for analysis of compositional microbiome data. The CLR transformation has similarities to voom-SNM, the batch-correction method brought into question by Gihawi et al., and yet is a sample-wise operation that cannot, in itself, "leak" information or invalidate downstream analyses. We show that because the CLR transformation divides each value by the geometric mean of its sample, common imputation strategies for missing or zero values result in transformed features that are associated with the geometric mean. Through analyses of both synthetic and vaginal microbiome data sets, we demonstrate that when the geometric mean is associated with a phenotype, sparse and CLR-transformed features will also become associated with it. We re-analyze features highlighted by Gihawi et al. and demonstrate that the phenomenon of sparse features becoming phenotype-associated can also be observed after a CLR transformation, which serves as a counterexample to the claim that such an observation necessarily means information leakage. While we do not intend to address other concerns regarding tumor microbiome analyses, validate Poore et al.'s results, or evaluate batch-correction pipelines, we conclude that because phenotype-associated features that were initially sparse can be created by a sample-wise transformation that cannot artifactually inflate machine learning performance, their det

Various life activities, such as sleep, physical activity (PA), screen use, and learning, are closely related to the mental health and subjective well-being (SWB) of the old adults. Previous studies have focused on a single life activity and used flawed statistical methods, which lead to divergent results, as co-dependency between activities were neglected. In this study, we collected data on the sleep, moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), light PA (LPA), screen use, and learning times of 1,738 old adults from 28 provinces in China. Analyses were performed using a compositional data analysis (CoDA) and isotemporal substitution model (ISM). The study results show that, considering changes in time spent on other activities, learning and LPA were positively associated with SWB and negatively associated with depression. In contrast, MVPA time was negatively associated with SWB and positively associated with depression. Screen use was not associated with SWB but positively associated with depression, and sleep was negatively associated with SWB but had no correlation with depression. The ISM showed that the most effective way to improve SWB and reduce depression is to reduce time spent on MVPA and increase time for learning or *** study was the first to analyze life activities from the perspective of time composition (how to change life activities' time allocation) to improve well-being and reduce depression among Chinese old adults and provide some practical life advice.
