A new universal lossless source coding theory is presented. Within this theory, a lossless source code called a grammar based code first transforms the original data sequence to be compressed into a context free grammar, from which the original data sequence can be fully reconstructed by performing parallel substitutions, and then uses an arithmetic coding algorithm to compress the context free grammar of the corresponding sequence of parsed phrases. It is shown that if a grammar-based code transforms each data sequence into an irreducible context free grammar, then the grammar-based code is universal for the class of stationary, ergodic sources. Specific redundancy bounds are also given.

In automatic fractal image compression, most of the encoding time is spent on finding the best match between each range block and the domain blocks. We propose the use of the local complexity of the image domain blocks to reduce the number of pairs to be tested on this search. Indexing the contracted domain pools according to their local fractal dimension and using multiple contraction factors we can confine all potential matches to a relatively small number of possibilities. By selecting an appropriate criterion for close match, the compression time can be shortened without image quality degradation. The performance of the proposed algorithm, evaluated by means of fidelity versus encoding time and compression ratio, is compared with five approaches. Future developments can also improve the compression ratio by using fractal dimension in the definition of the size of range blocks.

Combining the Internet with a geographic information system (GIS) provides a way of sharing geographical data remotely from the various locations without replication of the databases or the GIS software. An advanced raster map, VRRG (vectored restored raster graphics), and its compression algorithm for CVRRG (compressed VRRG) are introduced and it is shown how the CVRRG data could be manipulated in developing the GIS software which can support interactive geographic information efficiently over the World Wide Web using the client-side programming technique based on Java. As a result, this research shows that the CVRRG data are very useful and convenient for developing Web based GIS applications.

We analyze the spread spectrum technique of watermarking images and video. The technique can be used for both spatial and spectral domain watermarking. The watermarking procedure could be incorporated with the standard compression algorithm or could be performed on already available JPEG or MPEG streams after partial decoding. The spread spectrum method has the advantage that the watermark extraction is possible without using the original unmarked image. The simulation results show the robustness of the watermark to image degradations such as lossy compression as in JPEG and MPEG, spatial filtering, cropping, etc.

This paper describes a system designed to support a range of 'virtual clubs', video-enabled meeting places on the Internet emulating a real-world club where friends, acquaintances and business colleagues meet in a social context. The distinguishing feature of virtual clubs is support for multiple, simultaneous group interaction, where users can move dynamically from one group to another, and participate in a range of activities. An architecture supporting application development has been implemented, incorporating session management software and multipoint layered video. Features of the system include dynamic session management, flexible policy support, and novel user interfaces. Several virtual club applications are under development.

Image communication over telephone wireline and wireless networks is becoming a standard way of communication due to very efficient compression algorithms for reducing the required channel capacity. However, all standard compression techniques are strongly sensitive to channel noise and their application is suitable only for practically noiseless channels. For noisy channels it is reasonable to investigate an integrated source and channel coding method as a tradeoff between the image quality and the ability to control errors caused by noise. A real number (4,2) BCH code defined in the frequency domain via the DFT is presented. The major contribution of this paper is a new approach to decoding real number codes based on not only one but three syndromes which is not possible with binary codes. It is shown that a real number (4,2) code has the ability to correct up to 3 errors regardless of the presence of noise or even all i.e. four errors. The efficiency of the proposed decoding method is tested on a 2-D example of a gray scale image.

Decreasing the program size has become an important goal in the design of embedded systems targeted to mass production. This problem has led to a number of efforts aimed at designing processors with shorter instruction formats (e.g. ARM Thumb and MIPS16), or that can execute compressed code (e.g. IBM CodePack PowerPC). Much of this work has been directed towards RISC architectures though. This paper proposes a solution to the problem of executing compressed code on embedded DSPs. The experimental results reveal an average compression ratio of 75% for typical DSP programs running on the TMS320C25 processor. This number includes the size of the decompression engine. Decompression is performed by a state machine that translates codeworks into instruction sequences during program execution. The decompression engine is synthesized using the AMS standard cell library and a 0.6 /spl mu/m 5V technology. Gate level simulation of the decompression engine reveals minimum operation frequencies of 150 MHz.

Two major emerging standards, MPEG-4 and JPEG-2000, have recently adopted wavelet-based coding as the basic framework for coding still images and textures. Although both MPEG-4 and JPEG-2000 are based on wavelet coding, they are different. This paper presents an overview of these two emerging standards and highlights the differences in terms of coding scheme, performance, scope, functionalities, and applications. Both qualitative and quantitative comparisons are provided.

Variants of delay-cost functions have been used in a class of technology mapping algorithms. We illustrate that in an industrial environment the delay-cost function can grow unboundedly and lead to very large runtimes. The key contribution of this work is a novel bounded compression algorithm. We introduce a concept of /spl alpha/ delay-cost curve, (/spl alpha/-DC-curve) that requires up to exponentially less delay-cost points to be stored compared to that stored by the delay function. We prove that the solution obtained by this exponential compaction of the delay-function is bounded to /spl alpha/% of the optimal solution. We also suggest a large set of CAD applications which may benefit from using /spl alpha/-DC-curve. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our compaction scheme on one such application, namely technology mapping for low power. Experimental results on industrial environment show that we are more than 17 times faster than on certain MCNC circuit.
