Context modeling has recently drawn much research interest to improve the performance of a compression algorithm for binary data such as images. This is because it can help to remove the remaining statistical redundancy among the data after the prediction stage. In this paper, a simple context modelling scheme is proposed in the lossless compression of ionogram data. Experiments show that compared with the method without context modelling, this scheme can provide over 13% increase in the average compression ratio for the sample data files with almost nothing added to the computational complexity.

The huge amount of data that are being stored/or communicated between different terminals motivates the need for data compression. The compression of data helps in saving the required storage and transmission bandwidth, Several methods for data compression have been proposed in the literature. A new data compression technique is presented here. Its performance is investigated with respect to both English and Arabic texts. In this paper some of the Arabic text statistics are calculated, then the new technique and the other techniques are applied to different types of Arabic and English texts. A comparison is worked out, and an improvement in the compression ratio is observed.

A new method for reversible compression of multispectral images is presented. 3D data are decorrelated by means of an inter-band causal prediction obtained through the fuzzy switching of a set of predictors representative of 3D micro-patterns occurring across bands, whose coefficients are LS-estimated in a preliminary learning phase. The outcome residuals are entropy coded by exploiting context information. Results of compression on both Landsat TM and AVIRIS images show that the proposed approach outperforms other schemes reported by the most recent and advanced literature.

We present a novel video compression system resulting in very low bit rates, using dynamic object oriented compression. Our method separates important objects from the background and from trivial details, so as to keep good visual quality of the objects of interest. The resulting bit rate can be significantly reduced by sacrificing information on less relevant parts of the scene, or from portions of the video sequence which are of less interest to the end users. The method is based on an active dynamic contour algorithm which tracks the external contour of designated objects, and which we improve to provide more accurate dynamic tracking. The performance of the object tracking algorithm, as well as of our compression scheme are presented. Experimental results concerning bit rates and video quality are provided and compared with respect to the standard H.263.

Increasing the search speed for matching range and domain blocs is the main challenge facing fractal-based images compression. One way to remedy at this problem is to classify image blocs into categories and only search among domain blocs which are in the same category as the target range bloc. Since image blocs with a simple edge are a very important portions of the perceptual information content in image, we propose a method to both identify and classify this kind of blocs according to their edge presentation. We refer to this method as forced classification. This method is combined with other suitable methods of blocs classification available in the literature to allow a fast and encoding of grey-scale images. The result obtained is good, the encoding time for a 512/spl times/512 image is reduced by a factor of 37.52% than using the Fisher classification only, while the loss of image quality is low.

An adaptive space-frequency quantization scheme in a scalar fashion applied to wavelet-based compression is presented. Because of strong demands due to detail preservation in lossy image archiving and transmission, as in for example medical applications, different modifications of uniform threshold quantization are considered. The main features of the elaborated procedure are as follows: fitting the threshold value to the local data characteristics in a backward way and quantization step size estimation for each subband as a forward and backward framework in the optimization procedure. Many tests conducted with a real wavelet compression scheme confirm the significant efficiency of the presented quantization procedures. The achieved total compression effectiveness is promising in spite of the simple coding algorithm.

Presents a new method for compressing temporal series of SAR images. Well suited to noisy images, the algorithm requires a reference scene used as an input in the description process. This description is achieved through affine transformations, comparable to the ones used in fractal coding but applied here in a non-convergent way. Blocks in the image to be compressed are defined by a non-overlapping recursive partition. They are replaced by blocks taken from the reference image on which affine transformations, containing isometries and grey level adjustments, have been applied. Furthermore, the algorithm can take into consideration regions of interest specifying the local compression quality requested. Comparisons with classical compression algorithm, such as JPEG, EPIC or fractals, showed that the authors' method gives better results especially at high compression rates. This algorithm was applied to a set of RADARSAT images acquired over Antarctica. Those images were compressed at a rate of 0.25 bits per pixel, and brought on an icebreaker via an affordable INMARSAT connection, while still remaining of sufficient quality for ship routing usage. The affine description algorithm proved to be very efficient for local characterization of fine details (such as icebergs, or rivers on ice pack), thanks to the recursive partition used: a quadtree partition upgraded with triangles.

In this paper, we describe a new compression algorithm for encoding acoustic features used in typical speech recognition systems. The proposed algorithm uses a combination of simple techniques, such as linear prediction and multi-stage vector quantization, and the current version of the algorithm encodes the acoustic features at a fixed rate of 4.0 kbit/s. The compression algorithm can be used very effectively for speech recognition in network environments, such as those employing a client-server model, or to reduce storage in general speech recognition applications. The algorithm has also been tuned for practical implementations, so that the computational complexity and memory requirements are modest. We have successfully tested the compression algorithm against many test sets from several different languages, and the algorithm performed very well, with no significant change in the recognition accuracy due to compression.

In this paper we describe the application of a fuzzy perceptual classifier to improve still image encoding. A weighted low-pass filtering is applied before standard compression algorithms, which blurs image pixels according to their perceptual relevance. This results in a reduction of the number of bits required to encode an image without reducing perceived quality.

Memory is one of the most restricted resources in many modern embedded systems. Code compression can provide substantial savings in terms of size. In a compressed code CPU, a cache miss triggers the decompression of a main memory block, before it gets transferred to the cache. Because the code must be decompressible starting from any point (or at least at cache block boundaries), most file-oriented compression techniques cannot be used. We propose two algorithms to compress code in a space-efficient and simple to decompress way, one which is independent of the instruction set and another which depends on the instruction set. We perform experiments on true instruction sets, a typical RISC (MIPS) and a typical CISC (x86) and compare our results to existing file-oriented compression algorithms.
