A compression algorithm is presented, which utilizes the special properties of ultrasonic radio frequency (RF) data. The compression is done in two steps: First, linear predictive coding (LPC) is applied, using an one-step-predictor. Further, the remaining error of the prediction is stored using only the necessary word length to store the signal. A lossy extension of the algorithm is presented, which stores only the upper bits of the error signal. The algorithm has been tested with both, data of a speckle phantom and in vivo data. The data could be compressed to approximately 30-55% of the original data size using the lossless algorithm. In comparison, a conventional compression tool achieves 65-75 % of the original data size.

The linear feature detection task can be efficiently accomplished by means of the joint Radon transform (RT) and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) analysis. With regard to the former, a fast algorithm for its computation is described in detail, and the compression and robustness capabilities of the transform are discussed. It is found that the RT is suitable for transmission and fast detection purposes. A completely new, highly efficient CWT based algorithm, to be applied in addition to the classical thresholding methods in the Radon domain, is then discussed. The algorithm is capable to detect linear features even in the presence of large amounts of noise.

An emerging trend in the banking industry is to digitize checks for storage and transmission. An immediate requirement for efficient storage and transmission is check image compression. General purpose compression algorithms such as JPEG and wavelet-based methods produce annoying ringing and blocking artifacts at high compression ratios. A layered approach to check image compression is proposed, based on which a check image is represented in several layers. The first layer describes the foreground map; the second layer specifies the gray levels of foreground pixels; the third layer is a lossy representation of the background image; and the fourth layer describes the error between the original and the reconstructed image based on the first three layers. The layered coding approach produces images of better quality than traditional JPEG and wavelet coding methods, especially in the foreground, i.e., the text and graphics. In addition, this approach allows progressive retrieval or transmission of different image layers.

The ever-increasing volume of speech generated for transmission and storage motivates a continuing search for an improved cost-effective means to effectively compress speech. Earlier work by various researchers has resulted in various compression algorithms. Of particular interest to us are those waveform compression techniques utilizing the principle of silence deletion developed by Gan (1988) and by Rose (1991) which was implemented on good quality speech signals. We further modify, optimize and evaluate these waveform compression algorithms, and test their viability and performance on noisy speech from actual telephone circuits. The results show that up to 50% compression of continuous speech is achievable at an acceptable level of playback quality.

JPEG compression algorithms produce little degradation of echocardiographic images even at high compression rates. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of different compression levels on the quantitative tonal and textural properties of myocardial structure provided by first and second order statistical algorithms on digitally stored echocardiographic images. JPEG algorithms did not induce significant derangements of quantitative parameters up to high compression rates, suggesting its utilization for digital storage of echocardiographic images to be used also for tissue characterization.

We have studied some of the features incorporated into the baseline versions of the emerging standard called JPEG-LS. The baseline version had its genesis in response to the call for algorithm contributions submitted by Hewlett-Packard Company (Marcelo et al., 1995). A set of test images are used to evaluate various aspects of this very effective, yet relatively simple, lossless image compression algorithm.

We consider the problem of optimal, data-dependent zerotree design for use in weighted universal zerotree codes for image compression. A weighted universal zerotree code (WUZC) is a data compression system that replaces the single, data-independent zerotree of Said and Pearlman (see IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, vol.6, no.3, p.243-50, 1996) with an optimal collection of zerotrees for good image coding performance across a wide variety of possible sources. We describe the weighted universal zerotree encoding and design algorithms but focus primarily on the problem of optimal, data-dependent zerotree design. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm by comparing, at a variety of target rates, the performance of a Said-Pearlman style code using the standard zerotree to the performance of the same code using a zerotree designed with our algorithm. The comparison is made without entropy coding. The proposed zerotree design algorithm achieves, on a collection of combined text and gray-scale images, up to 4 dB performance improvement over a Said-Pearlman zerotree.

Digital images require a large amount of data to be represented. To make image storage and transmission practical and economical, image compression has become a major issue. In the past few years, several image compression methods using fractal theory have been developed. These methods promise better performances for compression. One of the most efficient approaches is based on iterated function systems (IFS), and has been promoted by Barnsley (1988). The basic idea is that an image can be reconstructed using the self-similarity it contains. A way to speed up the encoding process is to implement parallel processing using PVM (parallel virtual machine) software. The system utilizes both static and dynamic load allocations to obtain substantial compression time speedup over the original, sequential encoding implementation. In this paper, considerations such as PSNR, compression ratio, compression time versus number of processors and the workload granularity are also presented.

A new compression algorithm for fingerprint images is introduced. Using lattice vector quantization (LVQ), a technique for determining the largest radius of the lattice and its scaling factor is presented. The design is based on obtaining the smallest possible expected total distortion (ETD) measure, using a given bit budget, while using the smallest codebook size. In the proposed piecewise-uniform pyramid LVQ, the wedge problem encountered with the pyramidal lattice point shells is resolved. At very low bit rates, for the coefficients with high-frequency content, the positive-negative mean (PNM) method is proposed to improve the resolution of the reconstructed image. The proposed algorithm results in a high compression ratio and a high reconstructed image quality with a low computational load compared to other existing algorithms.
