In this work a dedicated pipeline for real time image compression, aimed at document archiving purposes, is described. Page segmentation is performed prior to compression in order to apply different compression methods to picture and text areas, considerably increasing the overall compression ratio. Page analysis and compression algorithms, suitable for implementation on reconfigurable hardware systems, are described.

In video applications, digital encoding techniques are frequently associated to the use of compression algorithms. compression algorithms such as the MPEG 2 standard allow economies in transmission bandwidth, while providing a service with a quality similar or better to the current analogue systems. The reduction in the number of bits necessary to represent a given sequence is achieved by exploiting spatial and temporal redundancy in the original video sequences. The number of bits necessary to achieve a given picture quality level will be variable because the redundancy in the original sequence is also variable. This means that compression algorithms such as the MPEG 2 standard will generate variable bit rate (VBR) encoded bit streams if a constant quality is to be obtained. The goal of the work described in this paper is to develop dynamic multiplexing algorithms to be implemented at the user terminal equipment and to study the potential benefits of jointly controlling the bit rate of several encoders and the channel bit rate. The bit rate of the VBR transmission channel is constrained by leaky bucket policing functions. The source bit rate is determined and controlled on a picture basis by the proposed dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm with the objective of maintaining a minimum level of quality among all video sources using always the least possible bandwidth and without violating the traffic contract.

In this paper, we incorporate the Weber's law into the framework of subband absolute moment block truncation coding (SAMBTC) together with an effective bit-rate control scheme to greatly improve image quality at or around the same bit rates. Or, alternatively it reduces the bit rates further without incurring more noticeable degradation beyond what the SAMBTC has yielded. Experimental results show that the proposed perceptually based SAMBTC distinctly outperforms SAMBTC coded at very low bit rates.

The problem of errors occurring in MPEG-2 coded video sequences, caused by signal loss during transmission, is examined in this paper and an attempt is made to reconstruct the lost parts at each frame. The proposed error concealment scheme exploits reconstructed temporal information from previously decoded frames in order to conceal bitstream errors in all types of frames: I, P, or B, as long as temporal information is available. Since no such information is available for the first frame (I-frame) of an MPEG-2 coded sequence, another concealment technique is added to the proposed scheme, which uses spatial information from neighbouring macroblocks (MBs). The simulation results compared with other methods prove to be better judging from both PSNR values and the perceived visual quality of the reconstructed sequence. Its quality ameliorates with time.

Burst-mode data is obtained when a SAR system is operated in ScanSAR mode. Missing data in the burst gaps makes it difficult to use traditional phase-preserving algorithms to produce single look complex (SLC) data. In this paper, three phase-preserving algorithms for burst-mode data compression are examined and compared to find the best algorithm for precision processing applications such as interferometry.

Presented here is a parallel processing system based on a digital signal processor (DSP) and a PC-AT host processor to increase the computational speed of the MPEG compression algorithm. The algorithm is split into independent tasks of approximately the same complexity, allocated to the DSP and the host processor based on the relative merits of the tasks, and computed concurrently, resulting in a twofold increase in speed. Furthermore, a provision is made to enable the user to effect a compression-quality tradeoff.

We have proposed two techniques to augment the MPEG2 STM5 bit rate control scheme for improving the coding quality of video encoders. The first technique can help control the quantization level in such a way that its statistics such as average and variance can be changed as desired through the adjustment of control parameters. Since the quantization level has very high correlation with the coding quality, this implies that the coding quality can be improved if the control parameters are properly adjusted. This technique improves coding quality at the expense of an increase in encoder output buffer fullness, resulting in extra buffer delay. To alleviate this problem a sliding window based bit budget allocation technique is added. The sliding window technique is effective for absorbing the peaks as well as uniformly lowering the level of the buffer fullness. Combination of the two techniques has brought in average gains in Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) roughly from 0.5 dB to 1 dB while maintaining low memory space requirement and reasonable buffer delay.

We propose the implementation of a MPEG encoder developed by the University of California at Berkeley on a multicomputer system. Since this application is in real time, we present a mapping of the video sequence between the EPs of the architecture, where the communication between EPs is minimized. We also propose the necessary load/store process with a simple mechanism input/output, where the global distribution process latency is compensated. Idonety of the topology of the system is analyzed, together with the most adequate commutation technique for the interconnection network. Finally the incidence of the frame format on the system communication performance is analyzed.

Mean squared error (MSE) and peak signal-to-noise-ratio (PSNR) are the most common methods for measuring the quality of compressed images, despite the fact that their inadequacies have long been recognized. Quality for compressed still images is occasionally evaluated using human observers who provide subjective ratings of the images. Both SNR and subjective quality judgments, however may be inappropriate for evaluating progressive compression methods which are to be used for fast browsing applications. In this paper we present a novel experimental and statistical framework for comparing progressive coders. The comparisons use response time studies in which human observers view a series of progressive transmissions, and respond to questions about the images as they become recognizable. We describe the framework and apply it to the comparison of several well known progressive algorithms.
