A new distortion measure for ECG signal compression is introduced. This diagnostic distortion measure, called the Weighted Diagnostic Distortion (WDD), is based on comparing the PQRST complex features (such as: P wave duration, P wave amplitude, P wave shape, QT duration, ST elevation, etc.) between two signals (original ECG signal and reconstructed ECG signal). Also in this article, a new compression algorithm is introduced, based on analysis by synthesis coding. In our compression system the encoder consists of a long term and a short term predictors and a quantizer with an adaptive number and values of levels, which are depended on the definition of maximum permitted distortion for each segment in the signal. The algorithm exhibits better results than other known compression algorithms.

Advances in rendering hardware and software over the last decade have led to a steady increase in the popularity of computer-generated animations. This is especially apparent in the entertainment industry as synthetic animations are being used in films, CD-ROMs and video games. The scientific community also makes heavy use of synthetic animations in visualizing data sets. A problem with synthetic animations is that, like video sequences, they contain a large amount of data. In order to store long sequences or send them across a network, the data must be compressed. One approach to performing motion-compensated compression on synthetic animations is to treat them as video sequences and use standard image-based compression algorithms such as MPEG. Alternatively, we can take advantage of information used in rendering the animation to guide the motion estimation algorithm and hence perform better compression. Such information includes the 3D world space movements of the objects in the scene and the projection transformations from world space into screen space. We examine how to use this motion information to perform fast, accurate block-based motion-estimation and design a closed loop compression system like MPEG.

An example of application of the wavelet transform to electrocardiography is described in the paper. The transform is exploited as a first stage of an ECG signal compression algorithm. The signal is decomposed into particular time-frequency components. Some of the components are removed because of their low influence to signal shape due to nonstationary character of ECG. Resulted components are quantized, composed into one block and compressed by a classical entropic Huffman coder. The wavelet transform with the threshold detector, the quantizer, and the Huffman coder can compress data with average compression ratio CR=9.2 and percentual root mean square difference PRD=3.0%. The lossy compression algorithm was tested on CSE library of rest ECG signals.

This paper presents a practical approach of employing parallel digital signal processing (DSP) techniques to accelerate the execution of an image sequence compression algorithm. The proposed parallel DSP platform consists of an IBM-compatible 486DX33 PC and two identical TMS320C32 DSP cards connected in a star configuration. On average, a speed-up factor of 2.3 has been recorded for the proposed platform.

The evaluation of medical image compression algorithms differs from the evaluation of compression algorithms of other classes of images. It is more concerned with preserving the diagnostic information in the image. Moreover, cardiac SPECT images are usually corrupted by Poisson noise which severely degrades the performance of any compression algorithm. This paper presents a region-based approach to lossy compression of noisy cardiac medical images. First, noisy source coding theory is applied to this problem and the noise is filtered optimally. Afterwards, region-based quantization is applied to the image. The region of the heart and the organs are not quantized in order to preserve the diagnostic information in these images.

We report the results of the design and performance evaluation of an ASIC dedicated to fractal image compression. The ASIC is to be hosted on a PC platform by means of an interface board connected to the PCI bus. The obtained speed-up is 300 times with respect to the direct execution of the compression algorithm on a 100 MHz Pentium platform. The ASIC has been synthesized from VHDL and totals 150000 transistors.

The uniform quantizers used in typical wavelet image compression algorithms can introduce perceptually disturbing artifacts by decreasing visual smoothness. In this paper, we use local Holder regularity to quantify changes in visual smoothness and propose a modified quantization scheme which constrains local regularity decreases. The reconstructed images show a significant perceptual improvement as well as an increased PSNR.

We present the results of a recent study on the impact of data compression on automatic target cuing (ATC) in magnitude-detected SAR imagery. Four "off-the-shelf" compression algorithms were tested: JPEG, an optimally-pruned tree-stuctured vector quantizer (PTSVQ), a wavelet coder with scalar quantization, and a hybrid wavelet/PTSVQ coder. At compression ratios of 2:1 and 1:1, all four compression algorithms yielded a similar image quality and we observed no statistically significant impacts on ATC performance. We also evaluated the impact of a noisy transmission channel on the overall system performance and found no measurable ATC performance loss at bit error rates of 10/sup -5/ when error mitigation techniques were used.

This paper discusses the results of a survey on various lossless and lossy image compression algorithms for on-board processing in spacecrafts. Three performance metrics are used to evaluate image compression algorithms and choose the most suitable one: compression ratio, computational requirements, and memory requirements. For evaluation of lossy compression algorithm, a fourth metric is also considered: transmission error susceptibility. Furthermore, a scenario involving spacecraft application of these algorithms is discussed. Alternative on-board processing architectures for such a spacecraft application are explored.< >

Astronomical images currently provide large amounts of data. Lossy compression algorithms have recently been developed for high compression ratios. These compression techniques introduce distortion in the compressed images and for high compression ratios, a blocking effect appears. A new algorithm based on the regularization theory is proposed for the restoration of such lossy compressed astronomical images. The image is restored scale by scale in a multiresolution scheme and the information lost during the compression is recovered by applying a regularization constraint. The experimental results show that the blocking effect is reduced and some measurements made on a simulated image show that the astrometric and the photometric properties of the restored images are improved.
