The highly integrated JADE (Joint Audio Decoder-Encoder) device implements audio compression using either G.711, G.722 or G.728 compression algorithms. The integration of peripherals, interfaces and memories with a fixed point DSP (digital signal processor) to implement complex speech algorithms such as G.728, opens up the market for low cost digital telecommunications applications. Using the G.728 Low Delay Code Excited Linear Prediction (LD-CELP) algorithm, the device compresses/decompresses a digitized PCM (64 kbps) or linear (128 kbps) voice signal to/from a 16 kbps bit stream. The device has been fabricated in a 0.5 /spl mu/m n-well CMOS process.

With limited additional effort, one can obtain valuable information on the subjective performance of image compression schemes. The choice of an appropriate experimental technique, however, is not always trivial. We show that the different nature of the artifacts introduced by different coders causes problems when evaluations are carried out using direct numerical category scaling. We demonstrate this by comparing the results of a direct scaling method and a scaling technique in which subjects have to determine quality differences between all possible combinations of coded images.

Currently, a variety of the MBONE video tools provide video conferencing capabilities on different platforms and with a variety of compression algorithms. However most of these tools lack the ability to interact with other media agents that might be used during a conferencing session. Such interaction is required, for example, for achieving lip synchronisation between audio and video streams or for quality of service control. In this paper we present a new video tool, NEVIT. This tool provides the basic capabilities needed for video conferencing services such as video capturing, compression and decompression engines and multicasting and ATM network interfaces. To ease the interaction with other media agents, NEVIT incorporates a message handling facility to interact over a local conference bus with other media agents, a floor controller of the conference controller. Currently, we are working on adding lip synchronisation and quality-of-service control using this conference bus.

We present low power techniques for mapping arrays in behavioral specifications to physical memory, specifically for memory intensive behaviors that exhibit regularity in their memory access patterns. Our approach exploits this regularity in memory accesses by reducing the number of transitions on the memory address bus. We study the impact of different strategies for mapping arrays in behaviors to physical memory, on power dissipation during memory accesses. We describe a heuristic for selecting a memory mapping strategy to achieve low power, and present an evaluation of the architecture that implements the mapping techniques to study the transition count overhead. Experiments on several image processing benchmarks indicate power savings of upto 63% through reduced transition activity on the memory address bus.

In this paper, an error resilient, wavelet-based compression algorithm is studied for the transmission of images and video over severely band-limited tactical communications channels. The underlying communications system uses both direct sequence spreading and fast frequency hopping to provide anti-jam capability. As a result of the hopping, noncoherent detection is used. The bit rate available for video will generally be under 300 kb/s. To make effective use of the channel, an optimal trade-off between source and channel coding is desired. For system variants, when it will be possible to also change the modulation, the optimization should include the source, channel, and modulation.

A fundamental drawback to increasingly popular ATM-based switching is the possibility of information loss with congestion. We demonstrate that with intelligent, fovea driven priority assignment of image data, we can reduce the negative impact of information loss over ATM networks. ATM standards allow a single bit to indicate high or low packet priority. To reduce the effect of this restriction we introduce the concept of priority dithering. Network multimedia multicast scenarios over heterogeneous link capacities where foveal prioritization would be of benefit are described. Network simulation results of this method are included which demonstrate the advantages of priority dithered foveal prioritization over traditional methods.

The MPEG coding scheme is expected to be the compression algorithm for the first ATM video applications. On account of its wide variability and the type of coding used, usage parameter control (UPC) of MPEG video traffic is critical. As the widespread leaky bucket policing algorithm has proved to be unable to control the MPEG traffic, we investigate the performance of a new mechanism based on fuzzy logic as a policer for MPEG video transmission. The simulation results given demonstrate that the fuzzy policer performs very well in reducing both cell losses due to UPC and their effects.

This paper takes a compression scheme that infers a hierarchical grammar from its input, and investigates its application to semi-structured text. Although there is a huge range and variety of data that comes within the ambit of "semi-structured", we focus attention on a particular, and very large, example of such text. Consequently the work is a case study of the application of grammar-based compression to a large-scale problem. We begin by identifying some characteristics of semi-structured text that have special relevance to data compression. We then give a brief account of a particular large textual database, and describe a compression scheme that exploits its structure. In addition to providing compression, the system gives some insight into the structure of the database. Finally we show how the hierarchical grammar can be generalized, first manually and then automatically, to yield further improvements in compression performance.

The results of both normal-hearing and profoundly hearing-impaired adults, tested with spectrum-compressed speech via a modified chirp-z algorithm with and without visual stimuli, are reported. Ten normal-hearing adult listeners and three profoundly hearing-impaired adult listeners were asked to identify nonsense syllables presented auditorily and bimodally (audition and vision) via video tape under two conditions: low-pass filtered or unprocessed, and spectrum-compressed. The low-pass filtered and spectrum-compressed speech occupies the same spectral width of 840 Hz; at 900 Hz and above, the attenuation is at least 60 dB. The spectrum compression is performed by means of a modified chirp-z algorithm, and the test results are significant.
