As data communication becomes more pervasive and complex and the use of digital data evermore wide spread, data security becomes a wider, more complex and more important problem. Encryption can be an important tool to help improve data security. At first thought, data compression and data encryption are incompatible because encrypted data cannot be compressed by any known compression algorithms. Encryption can be applied after compression, but this requires additional processing or hardware. However, fixed library autosophy tree network data compression can combine encryption by using the library as the code key. Under appropriate conditions the compression ratio can be high, the encryption strong, and no additional processing is required for encryption.< >

The method presented here is, conceptually, an extension of dictionary-based text coding to the semi-periodical signal domain. A pool of cycles is used as the dictionary in this case. If a pool cycle matches a signal cycle within a given error criteria, it replaces it in the reconstructed signal. If a satisfactory match cannot be achieved, the signal cycle is placed as is in the compressor's output. In order to be able to replace a signal cycle with one that occurred in the past the authors introduce a transformation method that enables them to preserve a number of preselected measurable features in the reconstructed signal. In addition to the above, the method presented exhibits some unique characteristics, unusual waveforms in the input signal (like in arrhythmia) are preserved exactly, and the reconstructed signal always 'looks' like the original, i.e. no staircase effect is present. The method is suitable for both lossless and lossy compression.< >

A new color image compression technique based on moment-preserving and block truncation coding (BTC) is proposed. An input image is divided into non-overlapping blocks. And each block is coded by two representative colors, or equivalently, by two sets of tristimulus values (R/sub 1/, G/sub 1/, B/sub 1/) and (R/sub 2/, G/sub 2/, B/sub 2/). To compute the two representative colors of each block, some color moments of the block are preserved, and the two sets of desired tristimulus values are computed accordingly using analytic formulas. The compression ratio is 6 when the block size is 4/spl times/4. Furthermore, a simple method is applied to quantize the bit map into 64 predefined bit maps and requantize each color component from 8 bits into 4 bits. An average compression ratio of 14.00 can be achieved.< >

The different mechanisms of principal component analysis (PCA) and vector quantization are combined in an architecture of one functional layer which implements vector quantization without using winner-take-all nets. After introducing cascaded vector quantization, the paper introduces a new network (the binary cascade network) which is composed of lateral inhibited neurons for PCA. They have bell-shaped activation functions which provide binary cascaded quantization stages. It is shown that this architecture is nearly optimal in terms of resource distribution.< >

In this paper, currently existing voice compression technologies have been analyzed and compared with respects to their methods, compression ratios, and features. Among these technologies, IMBE is presented as one of the best technologies for its best compression ratio, voice quality, and applicability to communication networks. Therefore, using this method, a voice supported multimedia service on data communication networks has been realized. Finally, this paper introduces the voice supported HiTEL services and its networks composed of packet switching digital network and public switching telephone network, and suggests the direction for development of the voice supported information services and its database construction toward multimedia systems.< >

In typical MC-DCT compression algorithms, up to 90% of the available bit rate is used to encode the location and amplitude information of the nonzero quantized DCT coefficients. Therefore, efficient encoding of the location and amplitude information is extremely important for high quality video compression. In this paper we describe the position-dependent encoding (PDE) approach for encoding the DCT coefficients. This method attempts to exploit the inherent differences in statistical properties of the run-lengths and amplitudes as a function of position. This paper includes preliminary comparisons between the PDE scheme and conventional coding approaches. The PDE approach can be applied in any transform/subband filtering scheme for image or video compression.< >

Lossless data compressors strive to find a minimal size representation for a given source's output. Commonly used compression algorithms such as Lempel-Ziv, Huffman and arithmetic coding can be shown to achieve source entropy under ideal conditions. In practice however, the performance of these algorithms is limited by issues such as finite-memory in the coder and non-stationary source statistics. This paper presents results from our study of universal adaptive data compression algorithms for non-stationary sources with memory. We argue that by using a "clever" update algorithm, coupled with a compact data structure, a compressor can achieve a more compact data representation than that produced by a non-adaptive or weakly adaptive one. We present update heuristics that can be used. Further, an analytical framework for adaptive compressors is developed, along with an intuitive justification in the context of Kolmogorov complexity. Our study concentrates on dictionary style compressors such as the Lempel-Ziv algorithm and its avatars. However, the ideas contained herein can also be applied to source modeling processes that are used in arithmetic and Huffman type coders. The concepts presented are used in a new lossless compression algorithm for wide band audio.< >

The authors describe a computerized system dedicated to the management of electrocardiographic tracings (ECGs) in a clinical cardiological database, working on a local area network (LAN). Clinical data are recorded during diagnostic procedures, and transfered into a database, built with an Xbase language and working on a LAN system. Management and representation of electrocardiographic tracings is allowed by dedicated procedures developed with the Pascal language. The use of the system consists of the following steps: storage of tracings by an electrocardiographic recorder; transmission of the signal to a network station; compression of the tracing; creation of a stable relationship between tracings and clinical data; and finally the retrieval procedure. The quality of representation is satisfying even on a screen equipped with a VGA board. Memory use is reduced to a few kbytes/ECG, due to a dedicated compression algorithm. Retrieval of the tracings needs less than one second, even on a personal computer with an 80286 CPU. Printing is available by all the clients of the network. Management of ECG and alphanumeric data on the network environment greatly enhances the efficiency of the clinical cardiological database. Satisfactory performance can be obtained even on "low profile DOS machines".< >

The Fastscan system is a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processor for Radarsat. It is capable of producing full resolution ScanSAR imagery in one quarter real-time and reduced resolution imagery in real-time. The purpose of this paper is first to provide an overview of the Fastscan system and secondly to outline some of the processing issues related to ScanSAR. ScanSAR is a SAR imaging technique for achieving wide swath coverage using multiple subswaths. A steerable radar beam switches among the multiple subswaths. The effect of the segmentation of each beam dwell on the design of the azimuth processing algorithm is investigated. The result of the algorithm design is an azimuth compression algorithm based on deramping with short azimuth bursts.< >

Devore, Jawerth, and Lucier (1992) introduced a definition of the smoothness of images that is directly related to the performance of wavelet compression schemes. The present authors survey previous results on the equivalence between smoothness, rate of decay of the wavelet coefficients, and efficiency of wavelet compression techniques applied to images. They report on other applications including deciding how many pixel quantization intervals are needed to preserve smoothness, and the fast solution of variational problems that arise naturally in several areas of image processing.< >
