This paper focuses on the data compression for fronthaul link in cloud radio access network (C-RAN). We introduce a linear predictive coding (LPC) based compression algorithm, which includes three main modules, linear predictor, piecewise quantizer and arithmetic coding. The linear predictor is used to eliminate redundancies caused by the correlations of LTE signals. According to the distribution characteristics of the output from the linear predictor, a piecewise quantizer is designed to decrease the quantization noise. To get extra coding gain, arithmetic coding is applied based on the output codebook from the piecewise quantizer. Furthermore, an alphabet reconstruction scheme is proposed to reduce the complexity of arithmetic encoding and decoding. Omitting the up/down-sampling and low-pass filtering operation in traditional schemes, our solution has simpler structure, but demonstrates better compression performance with comparable computational complexity. Remarkably, our scheme presents strong flexibility to different load ratios. Taking 40% load ratio as an example, within 2% error vector magnitude (EVM) distortion, our algorithm can achieve 23% compression ratio for uplink and 17% compression ratio for downlink, which has nearly 15% gain compared with the traditional algorithm.

Automotive stereo-based camera systems are at the focus of new vehicle functions development. Advantageous interconnections between automotive cameras and electronic control units are possible using IP-based technology in the vehicles. Because automotive implementation of this technology allows only limited data rates camera stream compression is necessary to transmit over such a medium. The image processing algorithms can be applied after a decompressing of the camera streams. This paper introduces a method for comparing the impact of different image compression algorithms on automotive stereo algorithms. We propose a comparison metric based on disparity error to compare the effects as a function of image compression algorithms, compression ratio and vehicle velocity.

Enabling Reliable Change Detection for Independently Compressed SAR Images

This paper develops distortion metrics for compressed synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery from change detection test statistics. These metrics are used to predict lossy image compression's impact on change detection performance. The metrics do not require the intended change detection comparison image to provide these benefits. An SAR compression system leveraging the distortion metrics is proposed. The system generates a bad-pixel mask highlighting potential false alarms that are generated due to compression and are subsequently discarded in the change detection process. The proposed system's performance is demonstrated through noncoherent change detection analysis after JPEG2000 and JPEG image compression. Similarly, a coherent change detection system is evaluated after JPEG2000 image compression. For noncoherent change detection at large compression ratios (CRs) using JPEG2000, the proposed system provides a 33% reduction in false alarms at a 0.1 probability of detection as well as the ability to maintain near-distortionless false alarm rates across a wide range of CRs. At a 0.1 probability of detection for coherent change detection, the system provides a 37% reduction in false alarms at modest CRs. The coherent change detection system is also demonstrated to maintain low false alarm rates across a range of CRs.

The tremendous growth in genomic data generation present an important issues in handling, storage and transmission of these data. General purpose compression tools such as Bzip2 fail in this respect;hence many algorithms have been specially suggested for the genomic data. This work introduces a new, loss-less and reference-free compression method to increase the compression performance of Bacterial DNA Sequences using Bzip2. The results show a decreasing in compression ratio by 7.74% on average with compression speed about ten times faster than ever before.

The design of conventional sensors is based primarily on the Shannon?Nyquist sampling theorem, which states that a signal of bandwidth W Hz is fully determined by its discrete time samples provided the sampling rate exceeds 2 W samples per second. For discrete time signals, the Shannon?Nyquist theorem has a very simple interpretation: the number of data samples must be at least as large as the dimensionality of the signal being sampled and recovered. This important result enables signal processing in the discrete time domain without any loss of information. However, in an increasing number of applications, the Shannon-Nyquist sampling theorem dictates an unnecessary and often prohibitively high sampling rate (see “What Is the Nyquist Rate of a Video Signal?”). As a motivating example, the high resolution of the image sensor hardware in modern cameras reflects the large amount of data sensed to capture an image. A 10-megapixel camera, in effect, takes 10 million measurements of the scene. Yet, almost immediately after acquisition, redundancies in the image are exploited to compress the acquired data significantly, often at compression ratios of 100:1 for visualization and even higher for detection and classification tasks. This example suggests immense wastage in the overall design of conventional cameras.

Member State Bitmask Technique (MSBT) is a hardware oriented transition compression technique which can compress the redundant transitions in a finite automaton. While the compressed automaton is stored in on-chip memories;a dedicated hardware accelerator performs signature matching by comparing the network streams against the compressed automaton at line rate. The MSBT consists of three functional steps which include the intra-state transition compression, state grouping and the inter-state transition compression. The state grouping algorithm which is currently used in MSBT is not compression aware and results in sub-optimal transition compression. To address this weakness, a compression aware Divide and Conquer state grouping method is proposed in this paper, which can efficiently group states that improves the transition compression in MSBT. Experimental evaluation of the proposed state grouping method, results in a reduced on-chip memory usage of the order of 10-30%. The reduction in the memory usage allows to accommodate more signatures in on-chip memories and perform signature matching with them at line rate. © 2017 IEEE.

Modern compression algorithms are often the result of laborious domain-specific research;industry standards such as MP3, JPEG, and AMR-WB took years to develop and were largely hand-designed. We present a deep neural network model which optimizes all the steps of a wideband speech coding pipeline (compression, quantization, entropy coding, and decompression) end-to-end directly from raw speech data - no manual feature engineering necessary, and it trains in hours. In testing, our DNN-based coder performs on par with the AMR -WB standard at a variety of bitrates (～9kbps up to ～24kbps). It also runs in realtime on a 3.8GhZ Intel CPU.

Today, electronically controlled modules or electronic control units (ECUs) are part of any automobile. These are deployed for managing critical and not so critical operations in automotives. Thus, a lot of communication occurs between these ECUs. Use of Data Reduction (DR) algorithm reduces the amount of data transferred in a given time thus improving the performance of the communication between the ECUs. Supriya Kelkar and Raj Kamal have proposed and implemented Quotient Remainder compression (QRC) algorithm for Controller Area Network [1] and showed the improvement in the range for the parameters compared to the earlier Enhanced Data Reduction (EDR) algorithm [2]. In this paper, authors of [1] have developed two more versions of QRC algorithm. Here, all the three versions of QRC algorithm are compared and their merits and demerits are stated.

Identifying the type of a codec that used to compress data is essential in digital forensics since many trials and errors required to restore data can be reduced. Nevertheless, most compression algorithms have been configured by using several parameters whose values can be different according to each user. Therefore, in order to restore data more effectively, the values of parameters as well as the type of the codec must be identified. In this paper, we present an identification and restoration method for Lempel-Ziv-77 (LZ77) compressed data. In the proposed method, we identify whether a given data is compressed by LZ77 or not. Moreover, we estimate the values of parameters that were used for compression. Using the estimated parameters, we restore the original data from the LZ77 compressed data. The simulation results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method with a successful compression identification and parameter estimation accuracies of 100% and 84.41%.

Gamut mapping is an important component in colour management and has drawn much attention in the last decades. However, previous researches mainly focused gamut mapping algorithms (GMAs) and paid little attention to the uniform colour space (UCS) where gamut mapping was taken place. In this paper, two new GMAs were proposed and compared with other commonly adopted GMAs. Two specific UCSs, i.e. CAM16-UCS and J z a z b z were tested by a psychophysical experiment to verify their impact on the mapping performance. Experimental results show that a newly proposed GMA based on vividness perception performed well and J z a z b z is a promising UCS for gamut mapping.
