In this paper we present a method for reconfiguring Virtual Objects (VOs) during run-time. VOs are semantic descriptions of ICT objects and the associated physical objects and phenomena they observe. VOs also include software modules to expose ICT object functionalities as IoT services for re-use. In our case study we show, by using an analytical model, how the energy efficiency of a wireless battery powered weather station (WS) can be improved. We introduce descriptions of the available operating modes and store them in the WS semantic description. These operating modes of the WS's VO are linked with the ability of the ICT object to change the compression method used to transmit information during run-time. We evaluate the energy efficiency and latency of three operating modes, namely uncompressed, lossy and lossless modes. The results show that the possibility to re-configure the operating mode during run-time from uncompressed to lossy mode lowers the total energy for transmission to 47.9%.

In the past several years, organizations have been changing their storage methods as the volume of data they managed has increased. The cloud computing paradigm offers new ways of storing data based on scalability and on good conditions of reliability and accessibility. This paper proposes the design of HPS3, a service that uses compression and concurrency techniques in order to reduce storage costs and data processing times in public storage providers. Different strategies for compressing and uploading data depending on differential characteristics of the datasets are also explained. The evaluation of HPS3 shows, in comparison with the default use of the cloud storage provider (Amazon S3), an average reduction of 61.6% in data transfer volume, 85.5% in upload time and 73.2% in incurred costs. Compared to Drop box, HPS3 shows an average improvement of 27.4% in data transfer volume and 93.6% in upload time.

Sensor cloud is an emerging technology which integrates wireless sensor network with cloud environment. The major issues to be addressed in the sensor cloud are storage and transmission. The existing compression algorithm inappropriate for small size files. The sensor data taken from different sensor are compressed based on their similarity but it is not appropriate when large numbers of sensors in the network. In this paper, we proposed an energy efficient middleware model for sensor cloud named as senud controller which is the combination of sensor gateway and cloud gateway. It can deal with the adverse situation in case of continuous and long duration monitoring of data. Senud compression Algorithm (SCA) reduces the replication of data and suitable for the numerical data compression. It is basically designed for numerical valued sensor data that supports large voluminous data collection in an efficient manner.

It is vital for a chronic medical patient to continuously take readings of his/her vital functions (e.g. heartbeat, etc.) and present to the physician. The problems are how to take readings without affecting the patient's normal life and how to send large amounts of data associated with vital readings like ECG, EEG, etc. to the physician effectively. In this article we propose a framework which will collect readings from ECG monitoring devices in a wireless network, then compress the collected data and automatically send this data to the physician through the patient's handheld device like 'smart' phone. We have also proposed an efficient compression algorithm for compressing the ECG waveforms in real time into a form that can be easily transmitted from the handheld device using SMS. The results obtained after implementing this compression algorithm using Java platform, micro edition version 2 (J2ME) are compared with existing ECG compression algorithms in terms of percent mean square difference (PRD), compression ratio (CR) and execution time.

In this paper, we give a survey on mesh compression approaches of the past few years. Since this technique has gradually become mature, we not only have summarized the previous methods such as single-rate mesh compression and progressive mesh compression, but also review mesh compression methods with random accessibility. The classification for each kind of methods is given, and the trend of mesh compression techniques development is analyzed based on the limitation of the current approaches.

We show that circuit lower bound proofs based on the method of random restrictions yield non-trivial compression algorithms for “easy” Boolean functions from the corresponding circuit classes. The compression problem is defined as follows: given the truth table of an n-variate Boolean function f computable by some unknown small circuit from a known class of circuits, find in deterministic time poly(2 n ) a circuit C (no restriction on the type of C) computing f so that the size of C is less than the trivial circuit size 2 n /n. We get nontrivial compression for functions computable by AC 0 circuits, (de Morgan) formulas, and (read-once) branching programs of the size for which the lower bounds for the corresponding circuit class are known. These compression algorithms rely on the structural characterizations of “easy” functions, which are useful both for proving circuit lower bounds and for designing “meta-algorithms” (such as Circuit-SAT). For (de Morgan) formulas, such structural characterization is provided by the “shrinkage under random restrictions” results [52], [21], strengthened to the “high-probability” version by [48], [26], [33]. We give a new, simple proof of the “high-probability” version of the shrinkage result for (de Morgan) formulas, with improved parameters. We use this shrinkage result to get both compression and #SAT algorithms for (de Morgan) formulas of size about n 2 . We also use this shrinkage result to get an alternative proof of the recent result by Komargodski and Raz [33] of the average-case lower bound against small (de Morgan) formulas. Finally, we show that the existence of any non-trivial compression algorithm for a circuit class C ⊆ P/poly would imply the circuit lower bound NEXP ⊈ C. This complements Williams's result [55] that any non-trivial Circuit-SAT algorithm for a circuit class C would imply a superpolynomial lower bound against C for a language in NEXP1.

This paper examines the problem of of developing a loss-less compression scheme for data from a nano-satellite being developed by the University of Saskatchewan Space Design team, the USST-Sat. The benefit of compressing scientific data from the satellite will be an increased ability to perform experiments and downlink the results. Goals for the compression scheme are to maximize space savings and result in a net energy savings over storing and transmitting uncompressed data. Our evaluations show that the custom scheme that we developed, called USST-Compress, performs compression as well as or better than the generic compression schemes evaluated, and additionally results in better net energy savings.

In section I, some aspects of an electrical energy quality estimator-analyzer are briefly introduced, and a notion of how data compression could augment the process of developing such a device, is presented. In subsequent sections, after a short introduction to data compression algorithms, a variety of Huffman code is introduced. The paper is concluded with a summary of an experiment, testing the efficiency of such a code, when using an offline-generated dictionary to compress measured voltage signals.

In 3-D animations and graphics, triangulated meshes play an important role to build 3-D surfaces of simple objects as well as complex objects. Generally meshes require a huge amount of data for storage and transmission. Consequently, compression of 3-D meshes. In this paper geometry and connectivity data are compressed seperately. Although connectivity data is compressed independently, the geometry compression uses connectivity data. For geometry data, we propose a compression technique using projection and connectivity guided prediction. The 3D mesh is transformed into two 2D images and standard image processing techniques are applied to obtain compression. We used JPEG coding for compression of images. For connectivity data, we present a new compression algorithm, based on the idea of making strips. The algorithm first encodes the connectivity information of mesh into a output text file which is half in size compared to the original mesh size. This is done by using recursion and stack operations. These text files can be further compressed into rar file or strip file resulting in faster transmission and rendering of complex graphical objects.
