In this paper we investigate universal data compression with side information at the decoder by leveraging traditional universal data compression algorithms. Specifically, consider a source network with feedback in which a finite alphabet source X = {X i } i=0 infin is to be encoded and transmitted, and another finite alphabet source Y = {Y i } i=0 infin available only to the decoder as the side information correlated with X. Assuming that the encoder and decoder share a uniform i.i.d. (independent and identically distributed) random database that is independent of (X, Y), we propose a string matching-based (variable-rate) block coding algorithm with a simple progressive encoder for the feedback source network. Instead of using standard joint typicality decoding, this algorithm derives its decoding rule from the codeword length function of a traditional universal lossless coding algorithm. As a result, neither the encoder nor the decoder assumes any prior knowledge of the joint distribution of (X, Y) or even the achievable rates. It is proven that for any (X, Y) in the class of all stationary, ergodic source-side information pairs with finite alphabet, the average number of bits per letter transmitted from the encoder to the decoder (compression rate) goes arbitrarily close to the conditional entropy rate H(X|Y) of X given Y asymptotically, and the average number of bits per letter transmitted from the decoder to the encoder (feedback rate) goes to 0 asymptotically.

A new real-time compression algorithm of bridge monitoring signal is introduced to decrease the data redundancy which result from oversampling of the signal. Based on morphology, two kinds of characteristic points have been chosen and applied in signal resampling with inhomogeneous sampling interval to achieve the compression goal. The Hermite interpolation formula is used to recover the signal waveform in decoding. Through the evaluate indicators which are obtained by calculating, a higher compression ratio and a much higher similitude of original signal and reinstate signal have been achieved by using the introduced algorithm in this paper.

This paper introduced an improved LZW algorithm of data compression. In view of Chinese text characteristic, in this paper, the expansion to the dictionary was carried on, and the first level database of Chinese was added, with some second level of Chinese characters space reserved to improve the dictionary memory method as well as the renewal way which was improved by experiments to the improvements of compression ratio. © 2010 IEEE.

LIDAR sensing collects data to obtain detailed topographical information about a region. A major challenge here is the large amount of data that needs to be collected for accurate surface reconstruction which in turn imposes significant storage, processing and transmission requirements. Current efforts to solve this problem have been focusing on applying compression algorithms to the range measurements. This process, however, requires the collection of large amounts of data, most of which is ultimately discarded. Instead, our approach is to apply a compressive sensing paradigm to sparsely sample the scene using the estimated pulse complexity to characterize the scene complexity, thus determining the number of samples needed for accurate reconstruction. As a first step towards this goal, we characterize here the individual laser return pulses for scenes of varying complexity, assuming that the pulses are composed by a finite number of innovations. Each scene is thus sampled at a rate that is much lower than the traditional Nyquist/Shannon limit. Our results show that accurate classifications of waveform and scene complexity with the simple nearest neighbor classifier are obtained using the proposed algorithm.

This paper presents an FPGA-based lossless compressor which directly compresses floating-point data streams to enhance the actual memory bandwidth of lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) accelerators. We show that the compression algorithms based on the 1D polynomial prediction are suitable for high-throughput hardware design. Moreover we show that integer operations provide comparable prediction performance to a floating-point predictor, while an integer predictor is expected to have smaller circuits than a floating-point one. We evaluate the compression ratio, the operating frequency and the resource consumption of the compressors with integer-based predictors through their prototype implementation using ALTERA Stratix III FPGA. We demonstrate that the implemented compressors dominate only 0.15 to 0.23 % of the entire logic resources and operate at 95 to 174 MHz to provide the compression ratio of up to 3.5, which means that we can enhance the memory bandwidth by a factor of 3.5 on average.

GML, a geographic information coding standard, has been widely used in WebGIS, heterogeneous GIS data sharing, integration, and interoperation. However, its features of large amount of redundancy inherited from XML file structure and geographic information system make a serious obstacle in WebGIS applications. According to the characteristics of GML, a data stream-based compression algorithm GDSC ( GML data stream compression ) was given, which separated the GML into structure data and value data using “Draw Pattern”, replaced the structure data with dictionary table during the separation process, and compressed the structure data and value data respectively to increase compression rate. In order to reduce compression time, GDSC uses two sub-threads for compression, decompression and network transmission.

Efficient utilization of energy is a core area of research in wireless sensor networks. Data compression methods to reduce the number of bits to be transmitted by the communication module will significantly reduce the energy requirement and increase the lifetime of the sensor node. This paper divides WSN applications into two categories, slowly-varying applications and non-slowly-varying applications, and indicates that the study of slowly-varying data compression algorithm is significance. Through analysis the probability distribution of monitored data, a simple lossless data compression algorithm namely Normal Distribution Encoding Algorithm specifically designed for slowly-varying data is proposed in this paper. Compared with the typical lossless compression algorithm, the proposed algorithm indicated better compression ratio and performance.

We present a framework for lossy compression of ultrasound RF data. The proposed scheme can be deployed either before or after the receiver beamformer. It performs a two-dimensional decorrelation in both the lateral and axial directions. The decorrelation in the lateral direction is done using a Karhun-loeve like transform, e.g., DCT or Hadamard. The decorrelation in the axial direction is done using customized orthogonal wavelet packets that are optimized for a particular ultrasound probe. The effectiveness of the compression algorithm for both pre-beamformer and post-beamformer compression is established by evaluating the performance on a set of simulated ultrasound signals.

This article introduces a new improved Biological sequence compression algorithm which is based on Variable length LUT and LZ77 algorithm and also it combines a LUT-based pre-coding routine and LZ77 compression routine. This algorithm can gains compression ratio lower than the previous Biological Sequence compression algorithm because due to the dynamic creation of look up table with in the encoding and decoding process. The overheads are reduces to maintain look up table and also the execution time decreases, other advantage are leaser memory occupation and easier implementation.

Multimedia Information Retrieval is currently a hot research topic due the popularity of the World Wide Web and the huge amount of multimedia data available. There exists an increasing interest to design and develop new methods and techniques to represent and classify this kind of information. Among the different sources of multimedia information currently available, we have decided to work with music audio files. Three different music representations (binary code, wave information, and SAX) have been used to study how the selection of a particular representation could affect a clustering process based on a set of similarity clusters. Two different algorithms (a hierarchical clustering method based on the quartet tree method and a genetic algorithm) have been applied to automatically perform the clustering. A compression distance, the Normalized compression Distance (NCD), has been used to generate the similarities among the music files. This distance is parameter-free and widely applicable so we can use it directly with different formats and representations. The paper shows some experimental results using these representations and compares the behavior of both clustering methods.
