We present the NML model for classes of models with memory described by first order dependencies. The model is used for efficiently locating and encoding the best regressor present in a dictionary. By combining the order-1 NML with the order-0 NML model the resulting algorithm achieves a consistent improvement over the earlier order-0 NML algorithm, and it is demonstrated to have superior performance on the practical compression of the human genome

Hyperspectral imaging is of interest in a large number of remote sensing applications, such as geology and pollution monitoring, in order to detect and analyze surface and atmospheric composition. The processing of these images, called spectral analysis, allows for the identification of the specific mineralogical and agricultural elements which compose an image. We seek to understand how loss due to compression can affect the spectral analysis results, and then modify the compression algorithms to improve spectral analysis performance. More specifically, we suggest modifications to the 3D-SPIHT algorithm for improving the classification accuracy of hyperspectral images for two classification techniques: spectral angle mapper (SAM) and matched filtering (MF). Results of our modification show an improvement in the error rate as reported by the classification techniques, indicating an increase in the ability to analyze hyperspectral images which have been compressed.

In this paper we present a lossless compression algorithm for colour video sequence which exploits the spatial, the spectral and the temporal correlations of a colour video sequence in the RGB colour space using the well-known optimal prediction theory. The main idea is to construct the optimal prediction coefficients estimating an autocorrelation matrix which exploits all these correlations. No colour transformation or motion compensation are applied because reversible colour transformations are not able to fully decorrelate the three bands of each frame, and motion compensation remarkably increases the complexity of the updating step of the autocorrelation matrix estimate. Furthermore, the fact that our algorithm is not based on motion compensation lead it to be robust to scene changes. The prediction errors are then coded using a context-based Golomb-Rice coder, with bias cancellation, but without run-length coding. To construct the contexts, the prediction errors are then modeled using an estimate of their local variance. This estimate considers all the previous prediction errors, using a forgetting factor to improve the adaptability of the proposed algorithm. The quantized estimated variance values are used as contexts for the Golomb-Rice coder, and, among others, we considered the following solutions: - 12 contexts estimated by sampling the standard deviation with a quantization step Delta = 1, and a saturation threshold equal to 12, [delta 12 ]; - 128 contexts estimated by sampling the standard deviation with Delta = 1/3 and a saturation threshold equal to 128/3, [delta 128 ]. The obtained coding results are presented for the proposed algorithm compared to JPEG-LS (without using any colour transformation), and JPEG2000 (in lossless mode, using the reversible colour YD b D r transform, and the 5/3 DWT). The results show an improvement of about 1.5 bpp and 0.65 bpp if compared with JPEG-LS coder, and JPEG2000, respectively

This paper presents efficient hardware architecture for Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) data compression algorithm that can perform both encoding and decoding operations simultaneously using a CAM array. An enhanced CAM cell design has been proposed to achieve search and twofold store operations in single access during regular match operations. The proposed architecture utilizes these enhanced CAM cells to accelerate the implementation of the LZW algorithm. The performance of the proposed design is evaluated using the Corpus benchmarks, where on an average a performance improvement of 53times is achieved when compared to the software approach

Since the data of Well Logging Result Drawings is so large, it is necessary to apply efficient algorithm to compress them. Based on the lossless compression of LZMA (Lempel-Ziv-Markov chain-Algorithm), this paper presents a new compressing algorithm for Well Logging Result Drawings after analyzing Result Drawings in CGM (Computer Graphics Metafile) format. The experiment results indicate that the compression ratio of the proposed new algorithm for the Result Drawings with cgm format is larger than currently popular compression software. The new algorithm is also suitable to compress Result Drawings in any other vector format.

An FPGA-based approach is proposed for implementing a compression system developed specifically for the signal of phonocardiogram. The compression method offers better rate and distorsion than standard audio compression techniques. Both the algorithm and the details on the solutions adopted for its implementation are presented in this paper.

We consider grammar based text compression with longest-first substitution, where non-overlapping occurrences of a longest repeating substring of the input text are replaced by a new non-terminal symbol. We present a new text compression algorithm by simplifying the algorithm presented in S. Inenaga et al., (2003). We give a new formulation of the correctness proof introducing the sparse lazy suffix tree data structure. We also present another type of longest-first substitution strategy that allows better compression. We show results of preliminary experiments comparing grammar sizes of the two versions of the longest-first strategy and the most frequent strategy

Existing header compression systems, like ROHC, try to compress all headers in protocol stack together, using monolithic profiles. The distributed profiles concept is introduced recently, used to compress protocol headers individually. In this paper, the research for optimal format indication for distributed profiles is presented. After concluding that per protocol CRC and padding are obsolete, the compression efficiency is calculated for TCP, RTP and SCTP stacks, and further tested on real captured flows. The results obtained show, that distributed concept can be nearly as efficient as the monolithic one.

compression algorithms generate a predictive model of data, using the model to reduce the number of bits required to transmit the data (in effect, transmitting only the differences from the model). As a consequence, the degree of compression achieved provides an estimate of the level of regularity in the data. Previous work has investigated the use of these estimates to understand the replication of building blocks within genetic programming (GP) individuals, and hence to understand how different GP algorithms promote the evolution of repeated common structure within individuals. Here, we extend this work to the population level, and use it to understand the extent of similarity between sub-structures within individuals in GP populations.

Recent processors utilize a variety of parallel processing technologies to boost its performance, and thus it is required that multimedia applications can be efficiently parallelized and can be easily implemented on such a processor with parallel processing features. We implemented a parallel algorithm with "double strip-mining" method of optimal codeword search for VQ compression on a shared-memory parallel environment and evaluated the effectiveness of the parallel algorithm. Namely, by applying strip-mining method to a loop with regard to vectors as well as that to codewords (double strip-mining), the buffer area can be reduced and results of our experiments find that this method can keep the same performance as the original strip-mining method with regard to the quality of compression. Moreover, two optimization methods for sequential computers are described: the shortcut calculation and the modified expression. Our experimental results show that the elapsed time is improved by 20% to 40% by using the both sequential optimization methods, so the effectiveness of the above methods on sequential computers is empirically confirmed and can be also applied to parallel systems easily.
