Data compression algorithms are widely employed to reduce the amount of data in order to save storage space and to speed-up the data transfer. Lossy algorithms provides high compression ratio but are designed to provide good results mainly when multimedia data are processed. Aim of this paper is to analyze the behavior of commercial lossy and lossless algorithms in the presence of measurement data. The paper also describes a lossy algorithm that has been designed to provide high compression ratios with a known uncertainty level

To explore the three-base periodicity often found in protein-coding DNA regions, we introduce a DNA model based on three deterministic states, where each state implements a finite-context model. The results obtained show compression gains in relation to the single finite-context model counterpart. Additionally, and potentially more interesting than the compression gain on its own, is the observation that the entropy associated to each of the three states differs and that this variation is not the same among the organisms analyzed

Considering the statistical independent property between phase and amplitude of SAR raw data, a new method is provided that the amplitude and phase of raw data are compressed respectively based on wavelet packet transform (WPT) after a thorough analysis on the decomposed wavelet packet coefficients of the amplitude. By using the real SAR raw data, the performances achieved in terms of certain parameters have been evaluated. The results show that this algorithm is superior to the traditional BAQ algorithm, simultaneously in terms of the reservation of phase information

DNA compression has been a subject of great interest since the availability of genomic databases. Although only two bits are sufficient to encode four bases of DNA ( namely A, G, T and C ), the massive size DNA sequences compels the need for efficient compression. General text compression methods do not make use of characteristics specific to DNA sequences. DNA specific compression algorithms usually take advantage of repeat sequences. DNA sequences with high repetition rates can be best compressed by dictionary-based compression algorithms. However segments of DNA that do not reappear in the sequence are compressed using different text compression scheme. In this paper, we propose an encoding scheme to compress non repeat regions of DNA sequences, based on dynamic programming approach. In order to test the efficiency of the method we incorporate the encoding scheme in a DNA-specific algorithm, DNAPack. The performance of this algorithm is compared with various DNA compression algorithms. The results show that our method achieve better results in many cases.

We introduce an efficient algorithm for real-time compression of temporally consistent dynamic 3D meshes. The algorithm uses mesh connectivity to determine the order of compression of vertex locations within a frame. compression is performed in a frame to frame fashion using only the last decoded frame and the partly decoded current frame for prediction. Following the predictive coding paradigm, local temporal and local spatial dependencies between vertex locations are exploited. In this framework we present a novel angle preserving predictor and evaluate its performance against other state of the art predictors. It is shown that the proposed algorithm improves up to 25% upon the current state of the art for compression of temporally consistent dynamic 3D meshes.

This paper proposes a low complexity and flexible fixed data rate compression algorithm for multispectral imagery specifically targeted for high-rate instruments used onboard of spacecraft. To reduce the development costs, this algorithm re-use, as far as possible, already existing compressors, such as CNES algorithms already used in previous missions or standard algorithms suited for space missions. The proposed algorithm is then composed of a decorrelation stage performed on spectral channels and can be used in front of existing monospectral compressors. The decorrelation stage is based either on a fixed transform evaluated previously on a set of images or on the Karhunen-Loeve transform locally adapted to the studied block of image, implemented in a scan-based mode

This article describes a new software-based on-line memory compression algorithm for embedded systems and presents a method of adaptively managing the uncompressed and compressed memory regions during application execution. The primary goal of this work is to save memory in disk-less embedded systems, resulting in greater functionality, smaller size, and lower overall cost, without modifying applications or hardware. In comparison with algorithms that are commonly used in on-line memory compression, our new algorithm has a comparable compression ratio but is twice as fast. The adaptive memory management scheme effectively responds to the predicted needs of applications and prevents on-line memory compression deadlock, permitting reliable and efficient compression for a wide range of applications. We have evaluated our technique on an embedded portable device and have found that the memory available to applications can be increased by 150%, allowing the execution of applications with larger working data sets, or allowing existing applications to run with less physical memory

Normal mapping can reveal the details of complex geometry object and improve the photorealistic when rendering. However, GPU should compress a great number of normal textures to save the valuable video memory and limited bandwidth just as the common texture compression technology. This paper proposes a Hybrid Adaptive Normal Map Texture compression Algorithm, which utilizes three useful tactics, which are TSSA, BlocklndexTable and I3DC, to compress the normal map texture according to its different features such as a great many of, few or fewer zero texels existed in the normal map texture. The experimental results and comparisons show that it can reach the compression rate of 5: 1 or more and achieve better image result than others'. What's more, it will be a good candidate for hardware implementation because of its low cost.

In scientific computing environments, large amounts of floating-point data often need to be transferred between computers as well as to and from storage devices. compression can reduce the number of bits that need to be transferred and stored. However, the run-time overhead due to compression may be undesirable in high-performance settings where short communication latencies and high bandwidths are essential. This paper describes and evaluates a new compression algorithm that is tailored to such environments. It typically compresses numeric floating-point values better and faster than other algorithms do. On our data sets, it achieves compression ratios between 1.2 and 4.2 as well as compression and decompression throughputs between 2.8 and 5.9 million 64-bit double-precision numbers per second on a 3 GHz Pentium 4 machine.

A low power 16-bit RISC is proposed for body sensor network system. The proposed IPEEP scheme provides zero overhead for the wakeup operation. The lossless compression accelerator is embedded in the RISC to support the low energy data compression. The accelerator consists of 16times16-bit storage array which has vertical and horizontal access path. By using the accelerator the energy consumption of the lossless compression operation is reduced by 93.8%. The RISC is implemented by 1-poly 6-metal 0.18 um CMOS technology with 16 k gates. It operates at 4 MHz and consumes 24.2 uW at 0.6 V supply voltage.
