A typical seismic analysis scenario involves collection of data by an array of seismometers, transmission over a channel offering limited data rate, and storage of data for analysis. Seismic data analysis is performed for monitoring earthquakes and for planetary exploration as in the planned study of seismic events on Mars. Seismic data compression systems are required to cope with the transmission of vast amounts of data over constrained channels and must be able to accurately reproduce occasional high energy seismic events. We propose a compression algorithm that includes three stages: a decorrelation stage based on subband coding, a quantization stage that introduces a controlled amount of distortion to allow for high compression ratios, and a lossless entropy coding stage based on a simple but efficient block-adaptive arithmetic coding method. Adaptivity to the non-stationary behavior of the waveform is achieved by partitioning the data into blocks which are encoded separately. The compression ratio of the proposed scheme can be set to meet prescribed fidelity requirements, i.e. the waveform can be reproduced with sufficient fidelity for accurate interpretation and analysis. The distortions incurred by this compression scheme are currently being evaluated by several seismologists. Encoding is done with high efficiency due to the low overhead required to specify the parameters of the arithmetic encoder. Rate-distortion performance results on seismic waveforms are presented for various filter banks and numbers of levels of decomposition.

This paper presents a data compression scheme for Chinese text files. Due to the skewness of the distribution of Chinese ideograms, the Huffman coding method is adopted. By storing the Huffman tree in the coding table and representing the Huffman tree using the Zaks sequence, the algorithm produces significant improvement on the compression results. The proposed method is evaluated by comparing its performance with three well-known compression algorithms and an algorithm specially designed to compress the coding table. This algorithm should also be applicable to other ideogram-based or oriental language texts. Also, it has the potential to reduce the dictionary size in a bigram or trigram-based semi-adaptive compression scheme for English texts.

Weighted finite automata (WFA) is a tool for specifying real functions and in particular grayscale images. The image compression software based on this algorithm is competitive with other methods in compression of typical grayscale images. It performs particularly well for high compression rates, for color images, and compared to other methods it has several additional advantages. This paper mainly deals with image manipulation. Weighted finite transducers (WFT) can be used to specify the widest variety of image transformations (linear operators on grayness functions). The authors briefly introduce WFA and WFT and give some examples of image transformations specified by WFT.

A novel discrete cosine transform (DCT) and fractal transform coding (FTC) hybrid image compression algorithm is proposed which dramatically improves the speed of the FTC coding and JPEG's ability of preserving image details at high compression ratios. The overall subjective quality of the whole JPEG decoded image is also heightened.

We address the problem of code size minimization in VLSI systems with embedded DSP processors. Reducing code size reduces the production cost of embedded systems. We use data compression methods to develop code size minimization strategies. We present a framework for code size minimization where the compressed data consists of a dictionary and a skeleton. The dictionary can be computed using popular text compression algorithms. We describe two methods to execute the compressed code that have varying performance characteristics and varying degrees of freedom in compressing the code. Experimental results obtained with a TMS320C25 code generator are presented.

Today, in the digitized satellite image domain, the need for high-dimension images is increasing considerably. To transmit or to store such images (more than 6000/spl times/6000 pixels), we need to reduce their data volume, and so we have to use image compression techniques. In most cases, these operations have to be processed in real time. The large amount of computations required by classical image compression algorithms prohibits the use of common sequential processors. To solve this problem, CEA (in collaboration with CNES) has tried to define the best-suited architecture for image compression. In order to achieve this aim, we developed and evaluated a new parallel image compression algorithm for general-purpose parallel computers using data-parallelism. This paper presents this new parallel image compression algorithm. We present implementation results on several parallel computers. We also examine load balancing and data mapping problems. We end by defining optimal characteristics of the parallel machine for real-time image compression.

In today's multimedia market, there are several hardware and software solutions to the transmission of video over a low bit-rate channel. The decoding part is relatively simple and inexpensive to implement. However, the encoding of full-size, high-quality video in real-time remains a complex and costly matter for the compression algorithms currently in use. A real-time digital video compression system (DVCS) has been developed to provide a solution to this problem, and make real-time video applications such as videoconferencing, digital video editing and several others affordable. Three-dimensional subband coding is used in the compression process because this algorithm is most compatible with the human visual system. The DVCS described in this paper is based on a simple subband coding algorithm which can be implemented in ASIC form with less than 50,000 gates. Hence, a much simpler and less expensive encoder/decoder chip can be implemented. The DVCS supports full screen, full-motion images at 30 frames/sec. A number of other standard resolution formats such as CCIR 601, CIF and QCIF are also supported. The intrinsic scalability of subband coding makes the compression system expandable to high-definition television by simply adding an additional image detail band.

We explore modifications of the LZ77 type dictionary compression algorithm so that it can compress gray-scale images efficiently. We consider the following modifications to the LZ77 compression: (1) Limiting the positions to start the pattern match in the search window to four neighboring pixels of the first pixel in the lookahead buffer. (2) Using an approximate matching. (3) Adaptively changing the lookahead buffer size. (4) Combination of approximate matching and exact matching using a non-greedy parsing algorithm. Our method is better than the UNIX compress and worst JPEG, and sometimes better than the best JPEG.

This paper describes an effort to extend the Lempel-Ziv algorithm to a practical universal lossy compression algorithm. It is based on the idea of approximate string matching with a rate-distortion (R-D) criterion, and is addressed within the framework of vector quantization (VQ). A practical one pass algorithm for VQ codebook construction and adaptation for individual signals is developed which assumes no prior knowledge of the source statistics and involves no iteration. We call this technique rate-distortion Lempel-Ziv (RDLZ). As in the case of the Lempel-Ziv algorithm, the encoded bit stream consists of codebook (dictionary) updates as well as indices (pointers) to the codebook. The idea of "trading" bits for distortion in modifying the codebook will be introduced. Experimental results show that, for Gaussian sources as well as real images, RDLZ performs comparably, sometimes favorably, to static codebook VQ trained on the corresponding sources or images.
