The problem inherent to any digital image (or digital video) system is the large amount of bandwidth required for transmission or storage. This has driven the research area of image compression to develop more complex algorithms that compress images to lower data rates with better fidelity. One approach that can be used to increase the execution speed of these complex algorithms is to implement the algorithms on a parallel supercomputer. The authors address the parallel implementation of the JPEG still image compression standard on the MasPar MP-1, a massively parallel SIMD computer. They demonstrate that the greatest difficulty lies not with the compression algorithm per se, but with the speed bottleneck that arises in the output of the compressed image. They develop a parallel output algorithm which addresses this problem and present results which show real-time performance on 1024/spl times/1024 images.< >

Cyclic-reservation multiple-access (CRMA) is an access scheme for high-speed local and metropolitan area networks based on a dual-bus configuration. In CRMA, the headend generates the reserve commands periodically. It is proved that the problem of finding a shortest cycle for a CRMA reservation (called a cycle compression problem) is NP-complete by showing that it is equivalent to the interval coloring problem. An O(n/sup 2/) approximation algorithm is proposed to solve this problem, where n is the number of stations in the network.< >

The data analysis program, SPECTRUM, is used for fusion, visualization, and classification of multispectral imagery. To facilitate data transmission and storage, a compression algorithm is proposed based on spatial wavelet transform coding and KLT decomposition of interchannel spectral vectors, followed by adaptive optimal multiband scalar quantization. The performance of SPECTRUM clustering and visualization is evaluated on compressed multispectral data. 8-bit visualizations of 56-bit data show little visible distortion, at 50:1 compression and graceful degradation at higher compression ratios.< >

We provide a comprehensive trade-off analysis of major compression algorithms as applied to multispectral imagery. Our goal is to identify a real-time, low cost codec for multispectral imagery. Hence the major criteria used for performance and ranking of various algorithms emphasize implementation complexity in addition to compression performance and robustness. Multispectral imagery codecs are designed by suitably extending and modifying the state-of-art still image codecs so that the resultant codec simultaneously benefits from the spatial and spectral correlations inherent in multispectral imagery. In particular, two different approaches of interest which emerge are vector quantization (VQ) and transform coding (TC). This paper describes and analyzes some recently developed multispectral imagery codecs utilizing the above two approaches. For completeness, a brief overview of alternate approaches is also included.< >

A novel analog focal-plane processor, the Vector Array Processor (VAP), is designed specifically for use in real-time/video-rate on-line lossy image compression. This custom CMOS processor is based architecturally on the Vector Quantization algorithm in image coding, The current implementation of the processor can handle codebook sizes of up to 128 vectors of dimensionality 16. The VAP performs vector matching in a fully parallel fashion, utilizing as its basic computational element the 'bump' circuit that computes the similarity between two input voltages and outputs a current proportional to this disparity.< >

compression of data is to minimise its representation which manifests in many applications such as storage and transmission. This proposed algorithm is an extension of the class of the substitutional encoders, typified by the Sliding Window technique (LZSS) of the Lempel-Ziv family of algorithms. This paper is concerned with the development of a universal lossless compression algorithm which allows adaptation to the variation in the source and yet is insensitive to the parameters bounded by the Lempel-Ziv Sliding Window encoder design, within a finite window context. This article includes a comparison on the analysis between the proposed Double Window Algorithm and its predecessor, the Lempel-Ziv Sliding Window Dictionary (LZSS).

Multispectral image compression has been identified as a critical technology area for future advanced land remote sensing systems. The nature of multispectral imagery is such that, with correlated spectral bands, additional redundancy exists between registered pixels which can be exploited for compression gains. Because of the stringent requirements placed upon multispectral compression by various exploitation activities, designing a multispectral compression algorithm is not trivial. This paper will concentrate, not on compression algorithms, but upon some of the system design requirements, image properties and other issues that face compression algorithm designers.< >

Describes quantitative distortion measures for compressed monochrome image and video based on a psycho-visual model. The model follows the human vision perception in that the distortion as perceived by a human viewer is dominated by the compression error uncorrelated with the local features of the original image and for a video sequence the distortion is perceived from two sources, the still areas and the motion areas of a video frame. The authors have performed subjective tests to obtain ranking results for compressed images and video sequences which were compressed using different compression algorithms and compared the results with the rankings obtained using their distortion measure and other existing mean-square error based measures. They have found that their distortion measure's ranking matches the subjective ranking accurately whereas the mean-square error and its variants performed poorly in matching the subjective ranking on an average.< >

The embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW) algorithm has proven to be an extremely efficient and flexible compression algorithm for low bit rate image coding. The embedding algorithm attempts to order the bits in the bit stream in numerical importance and thus, a given code contains all lower rate encodings of the same algorithm. Thus, precise bit rate control is achievable and a target rate or distortion metric can be met exactly. Additional, the technique is fully image adaptive, does not even need to know the dynamic range of the numbers being compressed. Because of the embedding and adaptivity features of EZW, judicious pre-processing at the encoder and the corresponding inverse post-processing at the decoder can be used to convert the numerical optimization used in EZW to other criteria such as a subjective one or one which favors critical regions as illustrated by an application called "smart compression".< >
