Spatial data compression is particularly important for the development of Mobile GIS. This paper gives a review on vector data compression of Mobile GIS. Firstly, the definition and classification of vector data compression algorithms are introduced. Secondly, the traditional, new and optimal algorithms are analyzed separately, and their principles, research status, strengths and weaknesses are further discussed in detail. In the end, this paper makes an important comparison among Douglas-Peucker algorithm, wavelet-based algorithm and dynamic programming-based algorithm.

With the ever-growing presence of IoT devices in everyday applications, the sheer volume of data exchanged is increasing rapidly. Communication channels' bandwidth used in these applications often presents a bottleneck and limits the frequency at which data can be exchanged, making application of compression beforehand a viable approach. In this paper, we analyze some of the well known lossless compression algorithms capable of seamless integration as software modules on embedded devices used in (near) real-time applications. Low processing and memory resources available on them as well as unsteadiness of aforementioned communication channels were taken into consideration in algorithm selection. Attained compression ratio is evaluated on data harvested from smart meters, whilst time and energy consumed during processing were analyzed within a measurement framework purposefully built for this research. We show that considerable gains can be attained in the volume of data that can be sent from devices based on commonly used microcontrollers, with only a modest toll on time and overall energy used.

Live audio-video streaming has become popular over the years especially when it comes to communication between people living huge geographical areas apart and at a very cheap rate or even free. However, when it comes to places where bandwidth is low or limited, smooth streaming has become a serious challenge because after all bandwidth is a natural resource and is limited. Therefore, in this paper we present two algorithms or `network streaming codecs' that are designed for compressing live multimedia streams to considerable levels of 25% and 50%.

This paper presents interactive compression algorithms for streaming media over high speed networks. An MPEG coded media sequence is typically partitioned into small intervals called GoP (Group Of Pictures). This structure allows a simple realization of forward (normal)-pay operation but imposes several additional constraints on the other interactive functions. Implementation of the rewind operations requires that the decoder either decodes the whole GoP and store it, or it decodes the GoP up to the current frame to be displayed. Both of these techniques lead either to the requirement for large storage at the client machine (to store a fully decoded GoP) or massive decoding processing power (to full), decode a GoP at required displayed frame rate). Neither of these options is desirable. Furthermore, Fast Play (Fast Forward/Jump Forward) functions of MPEG coded video present are problematic. When a P-/B-frame is requested, all the related previous P-/I-frames need to be sent over the network. This is likely to lead in considerable increase in communication bandwidth and decoding power compared to the normal-play mode. Several interactive algorithms are detailed with respect to server load /network bandwidth and decoder complexity. Finally an extensive comparative study has been carried out in order to determine the trade offs of the proposed approaches.

The paper presents a comparison of the principal lossy compression algorithms, vector quantization (VQ), JPEG and wavelets (WV) posterior KLT applied to multispectral remotely sensed images and evaluated by the classification algorithm K-NN (K-nearest neighbor). The main goal of the compression of remotely sensed images is a reduction of the huge requirements for downlink and storage. The Karhunen Loeve transform first removes the interband correlation to produce the principal components of the image which are then compressed by the principal algorithms. The quality evaluation was done by a supervised classification with the well known algorithm K-NN for remote sensing applications and the MSE for visual aspects. The obtained results of these accurate and particular analysis of the current compression techniques are quite surprisingly compared to other previous works.

The majority of online content is written in languages other than English, and is most commonly encoded in UTF-8, the world's dominant Unicode character encoding. Traditional compression algorithms typically operate on individual bytes. While this approach works well for the single-byte ASCII encoding, it works poorly for UTF-8, where characters often span multiple bytes. Previous research has focused on developing Unicode compressors from scratch, which often failed to outperform established algorithms such as bzip2. We develop a technique to Unicode compressors to operate directly on Unicode characters, and implement variants of LZW and PPM that apply this technique. We find that our method substantially improves compression effectiveness on a UTF-8 corpus. On ASCII and binary files, our variants perform similarly to the original unmodified compressors.

A standard interchangeable data format was recently developed through the Transportation Pooled-Fund Study TPF-5(299) to meet different requirements and needs for two- and three-dimensional (2D/3D) pavement image data storage and exchange. Considering pavement images occupy large amounts of storage space, efficient compression algorithms for both 8-bit 2D and higher-bit 3D images become one of the key components for a successful implementation of the standard. Highway agencies and industry vendors exclusively use the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) or its successor JPEG 2000 standard for 2D image compression, while the compression of 3D 16-bit images remains to be proprietary. The goal of this paper is to evaluate suitable algorithms for compressing 3D pavement images. An overview of the state-of-the-art pavement image data collection technologies was performed, and the relevant image data formats were identified. Subsequently, five compression algorithms suitable for 16-bit image data were selected based on results from a comprehensive survey of the TPF-5(299) technical community. The compressions of several representative field images were implemented and evaluated in terms of the computation efficiency and retaining of image quality. The expected benefits of this study include facilitating standard and efficient pavement image data collection and accelerating the development of consistent pavement condition evaluation.

Internet telephony is the technology that allows for the transmission of digitized voice signals over the lnternet. The Internet telephony market has exploded since March of 1995 and continues to grow with the distribution of Internet telephone applications via the two leading Web browsers; Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer. The technology needs to be studied in order to determine the effect of Internet telephony on network performance and to determine how telco quality sound can be achieved on the Internet. This paper provides an evaluation of the compression algorithms currently being used in Internet telephony, in terms of network performance and user perceived sound quality.

The DSRC standard gives the provision to process messages in XML format instead of the default binary encoding scheme. Although, use of XML encoding provides flexibility, it also introduces bandwidth communication overhead since the message size will increase and end to end communication delay since processing time will also increase. There are many proposed XML compression algorithms to decrease message size but few have been tested for processing and communication delays for inter vehicle communication. In this paper, performance measurements for various compression algorithms on DSRC messages are presented.

This paper shows how a real-time simulator of moving pictures compression algorithms can be rapidly assembled using a basic building block, here called MOVIE (MOdule for Video Experimentation). The internal architecture of the MOVIE VLSI chip can be compared to a small systolic machine made of a 32-bit I/O processor, a reduced linear array of 16-bit computation processors and data video input/output mechanisms. Externally, the chip is provided with four 16-bit bidirectional data ports and three 16-bit bidirectional data video port. Several MOVIE chips can be easily clustered to allow the size of the linear array of computation processors to be increased. The MOVIE chip is fully programmable in a high level language in order to make program developments easier.
