A motion estimation algorithm based on Phase-Only Correlation (POC) function is proposed. Motion estimation is one of the key tasks in several applications such as video encoding. Motion estimation is the process of finding the vertical and horizontal displacement of a block. The accuracy of this process depends on the search method and matching criteria. The proposed method calculates POC on the entire *** gives us a good estimated of the displacement that occurs within the frame. The size of the peaks depends on the size of the area that is moving towards the direction represented by them. We select a set of peaks that can be coded in a lookup table. Then, Sum of Absolute Difference (SAD) is calculated for each vector within the table. The vector with the lowest SAD for the block is selected as the motion vector. The search method based on POC provides better results compared with Full Search.

It is vital for a chronic medical patient to continuously take readings of his/her vital functions (e.g. heartbeat, etc.) and present to the physician. The problems are how to take readings without affecting the patient's normal life and how to send large amounts of data associated with vital readings like ECG, EEG, etc. to the physician effectively. In this article we propose a framework which will collect readings from ECG monitoring devices in a wireless network, then compress the collected data and automatically send this data to the physician through the patient's handheld device like 'smart' phone. We have also proposed an efficient compression algorithm for compressing the ECG waveforms in real time into a form that can be easily transmitted from the handheld device using SMS. The results obtained after implementing this compression algorithm using Java platform, micro edition version 2 (J2ME) are compared with existing ECG compression algorithms in terms of percent mean square difference (PRD), compression ratio (CR) and execution time.

Preliminary results of an attempt at correlation between objective parameters computed on video compressed sequences and subjective scores are reported. The measurement of the objective parameters is performed on sub-areas of the frame singled out taking into account spatial information and motion detection. The results show that the division of the frame into sub-areas can improve correlation performances provided by objective measurements; future planned studies are also reported.

In this study, an optimum wavelet transform-based ECG compression technique is proposed and its noise performance analysis is investigated. The major addressed issue is guaranteeing an error limit as small as possible measured by the percent root mean square difference (PRD) for the reconstructed ECG signal at every segment while keeping the compression ratio (CR) as large as possible with reasonable implementation complexity. For this purpose, an optimum wavelet transform-based compression algorithm is developed. Noise effects on the normal and the arrhythmia signal is analyzed based on the compression ratio (CR) and the reconstruction distortion. With the help of similarity measurement model it is defined that how much the reconstructed signal is similar to the original one. Two numerical metrics PRD and CR are used as the major performance evaluation parameters to analyze the results of the implemented method quantitatively. Using the developed technique, different types of orthonormal wavelets are compared.

Analysis of variable bit-rate video data has shown that long range dependence persists across a wide variety of codecs. While codecs are generally lossy, one may conjecture, as a partial explanation for this fact, that there exist information sources for which any lossless code results in a bit-rate process that eventually dominates a long range dependent random process. We prove this to be true for discrete time long range dependent renewal processes under a mild technical assumption.

Compressed domain image processing techniques are becoming increasingly important. Compressed domain retrieval allows the calculation of image features and hence content-based image retrieval (CBIR) to be performed directly on the compressed data without the need for decoding it beforehand. The colour visual pattern image coding (CVPIC) technique represents a compression algorithm where the compressed form is directly meaningful. Based on CVPIC, we introduce a compressed domain retrieval algorithm that makes immediate use of the fact that colour and pattern information is readily available in the CVPIC domain. Colour features are exploited by building a block co-occurance matrix of colour indices while shape information is represented through pattern histograms. Combining these two types of descriptors results in an efficient and effective image retrieval method that even outperforms popular pixel-based algorithms such as colour histograms, colour coherence vectors and colour correlograms.

Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration allows to dynamically change the behaviour of a portion of the FPGAs by downloading new information in the configuration memory of the device. Since modern Systems-on-Programmable-Chips (SoPCs) make extensive use of this feature, many reconfigurable area are placed in the device, with several configurations for each area. This comes at a cost in terms of dependability of the system and of memory occupation. The proposed methodology focuses on increasing the dependability of partially reconfigurable systems by safely storing compressed configuration data inside the FPGA.

This paper presents a frame-work for live multicast of video streams over the Internet. The overall system combines a scalable video compression algorithm, a cheap software only real-time video encoder and decoder, and a network unit. The scalable compression algorithm produces an embedded bit-stream to support decoders with various spatial and temporal resolutions. Bandwidth scalability with a dynamic range from a few Kbps to several Mbps is provided. The subjective quality of compressed frames improves significantly by the use of perceptual distortion measures. For cheap software only encoding and decoding we use hierarchical table-lookup vector quantization. Multiple multicast groups are used for the delivery of the scalable streams over the Internet.

The authors propose a new solution to the watermarking of digital images. This approach uses independent component analysis (ICA) to project the image into a basis with its components as statistically independent as possible. The watermark is then introduced in this representation of the space. Thus, the change of basis is the key of the steganography problem. The algorithm applied to the fragile watermarking problem locates any change in the image since it also applies to the watermark. The problem of robust watermarking is also addressed from this new point of view. Some results are included to illustrate the method.

The field of lossless image compression studies the various ways to represent image data in the most compact and efficient manner possible that also allows the image to be reproduced without any loss. There are many ways that this is accomplished and the most efficient strategy is to leverage the fundamental concepts of entropy reduction through decorrelation. The application of decorrelation methodologies prior to entropy coding is a modeling-coding strategy that produces significant results. This study focuses on the usage of the exclusive-or logic operator as a decorrelation filter. The exclusive-or logic operator is simply and reversibly applied to continuous-tone images for the purpose of extracting differences between neighboring pixels. The results of the exclusive-or operator based decorrelation filter are then processed through entropy encoding using Huffman coding. Experiments indicate that the exclusive-or operator based decorrelation filter has a significant impact on reducing entropy and therefore compression results.
