The technique of lossless image compression plays an important role in image transmission and storage for high quality. At present, both the compression ratio and processing speed should be considered in a real-time multimedia system. A novel lossless compression algorithm is researched. A low complexity predictive model is proposed using the correlation of pixels and color components. In the meantime, perception in neural network is used to rectify the prediction values adaptively. It makes the prediction residuals smaller and in a small dynamic scope. Also, a color space transform is used and good decorrelation is obtained in our algorithm. Compared to the new standard JPFG-LS, this predictive model reduces its computational complexity. The compared experimental results have shown that our algorithm has noticeable better performance than the traditional algorithms. Moreover, its speed is faster than the JPEG-LS with negligible performance sacrifice.

The availability of medium performance microprocessors, in conjunction with different concepts to generate real time efficient signal processing software on microprocessors without hardwired multipliers, allows the real time implementation of sub-band voice compression algorithms. This paper deals with the implementation of a 16kbps (8kHz, 2 bits per sample) 8 sub-band coder assuming a bank of 40 tap QMF decimator and interpolator filters, an adaptive allocation of the bits resource based on channels activity and a straigth block PCM coding of the decimated samples. The paper focuses on the implementation and software techniques which were used to achieve a complete sub-band coder with about 1.3 million of instructions per second on a processor with a 16 bits instruction and data flow.

DNA sequences are generally very long chains of sequentially linked nucleotides. There are four different nucleotides and combinations of these build the nucleotide information of sequence files contained in data sources. When a user searches for any sequence for an organism, a compressed sequence file can be sent from the data source to the user. The compressed file then can be decompressed at the client end resulting in reduced transmission time over the Internet. A compression algorithm that provides a moderately high compression rate with minimal decompression time is proposed in this paper. We also compare a number of different compression techniques for achieving efficient delivery methods from an intelligent genomic search agent over the Internet

This paper presents the performance analysis of five full-reference objective quality assessment measures on compressed high-resolution video sequences from two publicly available video datasets. Quantitative measures that were accepted by the international research community used in the performance analysis - the correlation coefficient of ranks and the linear correlation coefficient between subjective and objective quality scores. The performance analysis is carried out globally - the level of complete datasets and on subsets of sequences with common characteristics (compression type or source sequence). Three types of compressed video content were analyzed - H.265 and its predecessors H.264 and MPEG-2. The correlation between subjective and objective quality scores is analyzed in different scales (resolutions) of the video signal. From the analysis of the results, very important conclusions on the objective quality assessment of the compressed video signals were derived, as well as the directions for further work.

Compressive Sensing (CS) allows the highly efficient acquisition of many signals that could be difficult to capture or encode using conventional methods. From a relatively small number of random measurements, a high-dimensional signal can be recovered if it has a sparse or near-sparse representation in a basis known to the decoder. In this paper, we consider the application of CS to video signals in order to lessen the sensing and compression burdens in single- and multi-camera imaging systems. In standard video compression, motion compensation and estimation techniques have led to improved sparse representations that are more easily compressible; we adapt these techniques for the problem of CS recovery. Using a coarse-to-fine reconstruction algorithm, we alternate between the tasks of motion estimation and motion-compensated wavelet-domain signal recovery. We demonstrate that our algorithm allows the recovery of video sequences from fewer measurements than either frame-by-frame or inter-frame difference recovery methods.

We review the various tools in JPEG 2000 that allow the users to take advantages of the various properties of the human visual system such as spatial frequency sensitivity and the visual masking effect. We show that the visual tool sets in JPEG 2000 are much richer than what was available in JPEG, where only locally invariant frequency weighting can be exploited.

A motion compensation method for video coding is proposed. The method is based at the estimation of motion vectors along the bit sheets of the most informative high order bits and the adaptive technology for selecting block sizes for motion compensation. Evaluation of motion vectors along the bit sheets of the higher bits will significantly reduce the computational complexity and enumeration of possible blocks. An adaptive technology of selecting block sizes for motion compensation will allow to select large blocks for homogeneous areas of the frame, and smaller blocks for images with complex motion. The proposed method can effectively eliminate temporary redundancy and increase the compression ratio of video frames with minimal computational resources. The results of modeling and evaluating the effectiveness of the developed algorithm are presented.

Summary form only given. We address the problem of improving variable-length-to-fixed-length codes (VF codes). A VF code is an encoding scheme that uses a fixed-length code, and thus, one can easily access the compressed data. However, conventional VF codes usually have an inferior compression ratio to that of variable-length codes. Although a method proposed by T. Uemura et al. in 2010 achieves a good compression ratio comparable to that of gzip, it is very time consuming. In this study, we propose a new VF coding method that applies a fixed-length code to the set of rules extracted by the Re-Pair algorithm, proposed by N. J. Larsson and A. Moffat in 1999. The Re-Pair algorithm is a simple off-line grammar-based compression method that has good compression-ratio performance with moderate compression speed. Moreover, we present several experimental results to show that the proposed coding is superior to the existing VF coding.

The SPARCS system is an integrated partitioning and synthesis environment for reconfigurable architectures. In this paper, we use the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) image compression algorithm as a design example to demonstrate the effectiveness of dynamic reconfiguration achieved using SPARCS. We present a typical design process using the SPARCS system consisting of temporal partitioning, spatial partitioning, and design synthesis. The results, obtained on a commercial RC architecture, show that the multiply-reconfigured version of the JPEG compression algorithm achieves reasonable improvement in execution times compared to the one-time configured version.

Reliable methods for measuring the perceived image quality are needed to evaluate visual artifacts brought about by digital compression algorithms such as JPEG. This paper presents an objective quality-assessment method based on a circular back-propagation (CBP) neural structure: the network is trained to predict quality ratings, as scored by human assessors, from numerical features that characterize images. As such, the method aims at reproducing perceived image quality, rather than at defining a comprehensive model of the human visual system. The neural model allows one to decouple the task of feature selection from the mapping of these features into a quality score. Experimental results on a public database of test images confirm the effectiveness of the approach.
