We present a novel fidelity constraint for the image enhancement problem by exploiting the motion vectors of a compressed video bit-stream. These vectors establish a correspondence between image pixels across a series of frames, and our goal is to maintain this relationship during processing. In our past work, we considered algorithms that relied on the sum-of-absolute differences as the match criteria. As we show in this paper, this metric is problematic for the enhancement problem. We then pose the constraint within the context of a sum-of-squared errors criterion for matching. This allows for a more rigorous treatment of the fidelity constraint. Finally, experimental results illustrate the performance of the new constraint.

A scheme for the region of interest (ROI) coding of 3D meshes is proposed for the first time. The ROI is encoded with higher fidelity than the rest region, and the "priority" of ROI relative to the rest region (background, BG) can be specified by encoder or decoder (user). Wavelet transform is used on 3D mesh and zerotrees are adopted to organize the coefficients. The wavelet coefficients of ROI are scaled up and encoded with a modified set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) algorithm. In additional, a fast algorithm is proposed for creating the ROI mask. Once the quality of reconstructed ROI becomes high enough, the transmission can be intermitted and much transmission bandwidth and storage space will be saved consequently.

Most color compression systems reduce the redundancies between the RGB color components by transforming the color primaries into a decorrelated color space, such as YIQ or YUV. In this paper a different compression approach is proposed. Since the high correlation of the RGB color channels implicitly suggests a localized functional relation between the components, it is used here in an alternative framework, by approximating subordinate colors as functions of a base color. This way, only a reduced number of parameters is required for coding the color information. Furthermore, since this correlation is in particular high locally, the image is first sub-divided into regions. For each region the correlation is analyzed and exploited separately. The size of the encoded regions is gradually reduced to allow progressively a more refined description of the transmitted image. compression results of this progressive approach, which could be useful for slower communication channels, are presented, and compared with JPEG as a typical example of the decorrelation approach. Our conclusion is that the proposed new approach to progressive image coding could be superior to presently available compression techniques.

We present the concept of tele-action objects (TAOs), which possess private knowledge specific to the object instances. The user can create and modify the private knowledge of a tele-action object, so that the tele-action object will automatically react to certain events to pre-perform operations for generating timely response, improving operational efficiency and maintaining consistency. Moreover tele-action objects also possess a hypergraph structure leading to the effective presentation and efficient communication of multimedia information. The active multimedia system (AMS) is provided to manipulate and maintain the TAOs. The user interface and the system architecture for the AMS are described. A multimedia mail system is implemented to illustrate the usefulness of tele-action objects. Finally, we discuss the advantages of the proposed approach and future research.

This paper presents a PPM variation which combines traditional character based processing with string matching. Such an approach can effectively handle repetitive data and can be used with practically any algorithm from the PPM family. The algorithm, inspired by its predecessors, PPM/sup */ and PPMZ, searches for matching sequences in arbitrarily long, variable-length, deterministic contexts. The experimental results show that the proposed technique may be very useful, especially in combination with relatively low order (up to 8) models, where the compression gains are often significant and the additional memory requirements are moderate.

A compression method, based on the choice of a wavelet that matches the electrocardiogram signal to be compressed, is proposed in this paper. The coefficients of the scaling filter that minimize the distortion of the compressed signal are used to determine the wavelet. The choice of the scaling filter is done by the parametrization of the scaling coefficients in a way that all the constraints are satisfied for any set of parameters. A genetic algorithm is used to determine the parameters that minimize the distortion of the compressed signal. The performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed and compared with the compression using the classical wavelet Db3.

In this paper, we propose a new stereoscopic video coding method aiming at efficient stereoscopic video compression over terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB). The limited amount of bandwidth available to T-DMB network has a significant impact on the amount of information that it can transmit. In particular, to transmit stereoscopic video within the limited channel bandwidth of T-DMB, efficient compression of the visual information is required. One of the enabling technologies is stereoscopic coding which exploit spatial correlation between two views. In order to further improve coding efficiency of the stereoscopic video, a new compression algorithm downsampling residual data is proposed. Main idea of residual-downsampling algorithm is to reduce the resolution of residual data that consist of the differential values between original input image and predicted image and to code the downsampled residual data. Experimental results show the proposed method achieves efficient compression at lower bit rates than Simulcast.

Summary form only given. In synchronous compression, a lossless data compressor attempts to equalize the rates of two synchronous communication channels. Synchronous compression is of broad applicability in improving the efficiency of internetwork links over public digital networks. The most notable features of the synchronous compression application are the mixed traffic it must tolerate and the rate buffering role played by the compression processor. The resulting system can be modeled in the time domain by queuing methods. The performance of a compression algorithm in this application is governed by the interplay of its ultimate compression ratio, its computational efficiency, and the distribution function of its instantaneous consumption rate of the source. The queuing model for synchronous compression represents the compressor as the server fed by a single queue. We describe the basic model, develop the required basic queuing theory, look at service time statistics, and compare to simulation. We develop the queuing model for synchronous compression and relate it to theoretical and empirical properties of queuing systems and Lempel-Ziv compression algorithm performance. We illustrate that synchronous compression simulations are in agreement with the predictions of queuing theory. In addition, we observe various interesting properties of match length distributions and their impact on compression in the time-domain.

PC Grid is a promising platform to achieve a high performance computing with less construction cost. A kind of parameter sweep applications (PSA) can be efficiently carried out on the PC Grid, but there exist parallel applications are not suitable for it. We focus on PNN (Pairwise Nearest Neighbor) code- book generation algorithm for the VQ compression algorithm and propose a parallel version of the PNN algorithm suitable for the PC Grid, called "One-step Grid PNN", as well as "multi- step Grid PNN", which reduces the computation complexity on a master computer. The Grid PNN is a modified version of the PNN algorithm that creates a different codebook than the original PNN does, thus the quality of a codebook created by using the Grid PNN may be worse than that of a codebook by the original PNN. However, our experimental results show that the quality of the codebook is almost same as that of the original one. We also confirm the effectiveness of the one-step and multi-step Grid PNN by the evaluation of the computational complexity of the algorithm and the preliminary experiment executed on a PC cluster system.

Extreme-scale scientific simulations are already generating more data that can be communicated stored and analyzed. The data flood will get even worse with future exascale systems. This is true for output data and also for checkpoint/restart data. Scientific data reduction is a necessity to drastically accelerate I/O, reduce data footprint on storage and also to speed-up significantly computation, as demonstrated by the 2017 Gordon Bell award winner. But reduction should be performed wisely, for execution correctness (checkpoint/restart) and to keep the information that matters for the scientists. We can try to develop application-specific lossy data reduction techniques or to compress the dataset with advanced generic lossless compression algorithms. Unfortunately, these two approaches are either unpractical for most applications or do not provide enough data reduction for scientific datasets. Other domains already familiar with Big Data massively employ lossy compression to reduce the data size. However, lossy compression has very rarely been applied to scientific simulation data and as a result it is not well understood. In this talk, we will present challenges and opportunities in terms of compression algorithms and application of lossy compression to scientific data. We will detail not only the best-in-class compression algorithms but also the tools to assess comprehensively the error introduced by lossy compression. We will give examples of lossy compression of scientific datasets with application to visualization and checkpoint/restart. Lossy compression of scientific data reveal itself as a fascinating young research domain with many opportunities to explore and discover new techniques.
