Summary form only given. In synchronous compression, a lossless data compressor attempts to equalize the rates of two synchronous communication channels. Synchronous compression is of broad applicability in improving the efficiency of internetwork links over public digital networks. The most notable features of the synchronous compression application are the mixed traffic it must tolerate and the rate buffering role played by the compression processor. The resulting system can be modeled in the time domain by queuing methods. The performance of a compression algorithm in this application is governed by the interplay of its ultimate compression ratio, its computational efficiency, and the distribution function of its instantaneous consumption rate of the source. The queuing model for synchronous compression represents the compressor as the server fed by a single queue. We describe the basic model, develop the required basic queuing theory, look at service time statistics, and compare to simulation. We develop the queuing model for synchronous compression and relate it to theoretical and empirical properties of queuing systems and Lempel-Ziv compression algorithm performance. We illustrate that synchronous compression simulations are in agreement with the predictions of queuing theory. In addition, we observe various interesting properties of match length distributions and their impact on compression in the time-domain.

Extreme-scale scientific simulations are already generating more data that can be communicated stored and analyzed. The data flood will get even worse with future exascale systems. This is true for output data and also for checkpoint/restart data. Scientific data reduction is a necessity to drastically accelerate I/O, reduce data footprint on storage and also to speed-up significantly computation, as demonstrated by the 2017 Gordon Bell award winner. But reduction should be performed wisely, for execution correctness (checkpoint/restart) and to keep the information that matters for the scientists. We can try to develop application-specific lossy data reduction techniques or to compress the dataset with advanced generic lossless compression algorithms. Unfortunately, these two approaches are either unpractical for most applications or do not provide enough data reduction for scientific datasets. Other domains already familiar with Big Data massively employ lossy compression to reduce the data size. However, lossy compression has very rarely been applied to scientific simulation data and as a result it is not well understood. In this talk, we will present challenges and opportunities in terms of compression algorithms and application of lossy compression to scientific data. We will detail not only the best-in-class compression algorithms but also the tools to assess comprehensively the error introduced by lossy compression. We will give examples of lossy compression of scientific datasets with application to visualization and checkpoint/restart. Lossy compression of scientific data reveal itself as a fascinating young research domain with many opportunities to explore and discover new techniques.

PC Grid is a promising platform to achieve a high performance computing with less construction cost. A kind of parameter sweep applications (PSA) can be efficiently carried out on the PC Grid, but there exist parallel applications are not suitable for it. We focus on PNN (Pairwise Nearest Neighbor) code- book generation algorithm for the VQ compression algorithm and propose a parallel version of the PNN algorithm suitable for the PC Grid, called "One-step Grid PNN", as well as "multi- step Grid PNN", which reduces the computation complexity on a master computer. The Grid PNN is a modified version of the PNN algorithm that creates a different codebook than the original PNN does, thus the quality of a codebook created by using the Grid PNN may be worse than that of a codebook by the original PNN. However, our experimental results show that the quality of the codebook is almost same as that of the original one. We also confirm the effectiveness of the one-step and multi-step Grid PNN by the evaluation of the computational complexity of the algorithm and the preliminary experiment executed on a PC cluster system.

This paper has the purpose of describing a new approach on firmware update on automotive ECUs. The firmware update process for certain automotive ECUs requires excessive time through the CAN bus. By using the delta flashing concept, firmware update time can be greatly reduced by reducing the quantity of the data that is transmitted over the network.

Intelligent Dictionary Based Encoding (IDBE), an encoding strategy offers higher compression ratios and rate of compression. Transforming text into some intermediate form by using IDBE is the basic philosophy of this compression technique. It is observed that a better compression is achieved by using IDBE as the preprocessing stage for the BWT based compressor. This paper aims at developing such a new and advanced technique called "Enhanced Intelligent Dictionary Based Encoding (EIDBE)". This approach is used in conjunction with BWT and is a dictionary based lossless reversible transformation that can be applied to a source text to improve existing or backend algorithm's ability to compress. EIDBE achieves better compression at the preprocessing stage and enough redundancy is retained for the compression algorithms to get better results. The experimental results of this compression method are also analysed.

The risk of having a program execution corrupted by transient faults is growing as computer processors are using more transistors, are becoming denser and are operating at lower voltages. This risk is multiplied when we take into account High Performance Computing with its hundreds or thousands of processors working together to solve a single problem. To evaluate how program executions behave in presence of transient faults we have proposed the concept of robustness against transient faults. This concept can be used to determine the more significant parts of a program with respect to the risk of misbehavior by transient faults for further study of improvement. The robustness concept can also be used as a metric to compare different approaches applied to a program to make it less likely of producing corrupted results. In this work we present why and how is possible to simplify a fraction of a program's robustness by taking into account the repetition of sequences of instructions. The simplified analysis obtains the exact same result as a full program robustness evaluation (exhaustively and without estimations). By simplifying the analysis we were able to reduce in up to 192 times our previously published robustness analysis time and also were able to evaluate larger programs in feasible time (unimaginable by using executions in a fault injection capable environment).

This paper presents a study of the statistical characteristics and multiplexing of variable-bit-rate (VBR) MPEG-coded video streams. Our results are based on 23 minutes of video obtained from the entertainment movie, The Wizard of Oz. The experimental setup which was used to capture, digitize, and compress the video stream is described. Although the study is conducted at the frame level (as opposed to the slice level), it is observed that the inter-frame correlation structure for the frame-size sequence involves complicated forms of pseudo-periodicity that are mainly affected by the compression pattern of the sequence. A simple model for an MPEG traffic source is developed in which frames are generated according to the compression pattern of the original captured video stream. The number of cells per frame is fitted by a lognormal distribution. Simulations are used to study the performance of an ATM multiplexer for MPEG streams.

Occam filters are a general technique for filtering random noise via data compression. Previously it was established that these filters converge in a learning theoretic sense, with convergence bounds that depended on the probability distribution of the noise variable. The paper presents a convergence bound for uniformly sampled signals that is independent of the probability distribution of the noise variable, barring some minimal assumptions. It also examines an application of Occam filters to remove random noise from digital video, thereby enabling improved nearly lossless compression.< >

Both computation-intensive and bandwidth-intensive are primary characterizes in closed-loop video coding systems. With the rapid progress of semiconductor industry, the commutation-intensive issue can be properly handled by parallelism or pipeline processing. Therefore, bandwidth-intensive issue becomes more and more important in video coding. The embedded compression (EC) technology is widely applied to reduce frame memory size and bandwidth requirement. In this paper, an efficient EC algorithm, including ABC-based recompression, side-clipping mechanism and average-based prediction, is proposed. With proposed EC algorithm, the compression ratio (CR) of 50percent can be guaranteed with minor PSNR degradation of 4.02percent on average. Although EC is an additional function in video coding system, the extra encoding computation load is just 2.4percent on average. Consequently, the proposed EC algorithm can be exploited to reduce the frame memory and bandwidth requirement in video coding systems.

Many popular image compression schemes are based on block-transform coding, a technique where images are broken into small blocks of pixels prior to transformation and compression. Block-transform coding often introduces blocking artifacts which are particularly prevalent at low bit-rates due to quantization errors. A novel algorithm for deblocking block-transform compressed images is proposed in this paper. This algorithm is based on a phase-adaptive, shifted thresholding technique that estimates the original uncompressed image as the weighted sum of shifted versions of the decompressed image subjected to a threshold. An efficient integer transform is used to construct the shifted versions of the decompressed image. The aggregation weights are obtained adaptively using the local phase moment characteristics of the underlying image content. The proposed algorithm utilizes important human perceptual characteristics to provide effective image deblocking while preserving image detail. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is more efficient than comparable methods and yields both subjective results and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) results comparable to existing methods.
