SIP and SDP are used in 3G cellular IP multimedia subsystems (IMS) to perform multimedia session setup and maintenance. However, both protocols are text-based and have large messages with sizes frequently exceeding several hundred bytes. SigComp can be used to compress these messages and greatly reduce the call setup and feature invocation delays. In this paper, the potential gain of using SigComp to compress SIP/SDP is demonstrated through performance results. Our results show that dictionary-based compression algorithms are best suited for SigComp. Static and user-defined dictionaries are very important for reducing the first several messages in a SIP dialog while extended operations such as dynamic and shared compression can significantly improve the overall compression efficiency. On average, the message sizes can be reduced by as much as 88% with negligible compression/decompression time.

In this paper, a digital image watermarking technique based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT) will be proposed. This scheme is designed utilizing principles deriving from the human visual system, JPEG standard compression algorithm and DWT decomposition. It is optimized special for against JPEG compression. The watermark signal as a binary sequence is embedded to the diagonal higher frequency band at 2-D level DWT decomposition of Y channel in YUV color model. The experiment shows that the proposed scheme has strong robust to against JPEG compression, some popular filtering and geometrical attacks.

Data compression techniques can alleviate low bandwidth problems in multigigabit networks and are especially useful when combined with encryption. This paper presents a reconfigurable hardware compressor core, the Titan-R, which can compress data streams at 8.5 Gb/sec making it the fastest reconfigurable such device ever proposed. Its compression algorithm is a variation of the most widely used and efficient such scheme the Lempel-Ziv (LZ) algorithm that uses part of the previous input stream as the dictionary. In order to support this high network throughput the Titan-Rutilizes a very fine-grained pipeline and takes advantages of the high-bandwidth provided by the distributed on-chip RAMs of the state-of-the-art FPGAs.

It is generally believed that the performance of current image coding techniques is not close enough to the fundamental limit on the bit rate at which high reception quality is maintained. For supporting the future applications that demand high image quality at very low bit rates, more efficient coding algorithms are expected. Among numerous approaches to reach this optimality, perceptual coding that matches the compression algorithm to the human perception mechanism has been considered as the most promising solution, and has recently become an important area of research. In addition to the investigation on perceptual coding, the need for a distortion metric for predicting the distortion has long been recognized in the image processing community. For still image evaluation, several distortion measures tied to some psycho-visual properties have been proposed. Examples of such measures are to be found in the literature. One significant problem associated with these metrics is that there is little information on how these measures perform in comparison to one another. The purpose of this paper is to provide a rigorous evaluation of four metrics which are designed for the evaluation of coded achromatic still images.

This paper describes a new set of block source codes well suited for data compression. These codes are defined by sets of productions rules of the form allowbar rarr blowbar where a isin A represents a value from the source alphabet A and llowbar, blowbar are small sequences of bits. These codes naturally encompass other variable length codes (VLCs) such as Huffman codes. It is shown that these codes may have a similar or even a shorter mean description length than Huffman codes for the same encoding and decoding complexity. A first code design method allowing to preserve the lexicographic order in the bit domain is described. The corresponding codes have the same mean description length (mdl) as Huffman codes from which they are constructed. Therefore, they outperform from a compression point of view the Hu-Tucker codes designed to offer the lexicographic property in the bit domain. A second construction method allows to obtain codes such that the marginal bit probability converges to 0.5 as the sequence length increases and this is achieved even if the probability distribution function is not known by the encoder

LZW is a lossless data compression algorithm which has been incorporated as the standard of the Consultative Committee on International Telegraphy and Telephony. In addition, LZW is used to create GIF, TIFF and PDF files. In this paper, we propose an improvement to LZW using ideas from sequential pattern mining. The goal of this area is to find all the maximal frequent sequences (MFSs) which are sequences that appear at least /spl beta/ times and they are not subsequences of any other MFS. We preprocess the data using an algorithm for searching all the MFSs to manage the MFSs as part of the dictionary of LZW, according to the frequency of the MFS. This modification allows us to propose a new variant of LZW algorithm. Some experiments with text files, showing the compression rates of the proposed algorithm, were performed.

The Consolidated Automated Support System (CASS) Automated Technical Information (ATI) System used to display Technical Manuals and Test Program Instructions is a page turner system. Each page of a manual is a raster page (bitmapped graphics) displayable at 72 dpi. Selection of these pages is accomplished by using ASCII index files. Expanding the content and use of the ASCII index files and linking the indexes causes the CASS ATI to appear to the user as a form of an IETM with less graphic files required. This approach will save development dollars and make the CASS ATI more user friendly. The addition of duplicate Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM) for each raster file makes the optical disk data used for CASS ATI totally updatable.< >

Manipulating digital video using desktop computers, especially in uncompressed form, and communicating it over networks can be time-consuming because of its large bandwidth requirements. While the size of a video frame is large, the amount of new information in each video frame is often quite small. We present an algorithm that predicts those parts of the video image that change from frame to frame. This effectively allows the manipulation of uncompressed digital video using common personal computers with no special hardware support. The algorithm uses a statistical technique and takes advantage of locality of change. We show that the algorithm is effective and yet is simple and low-cost.
