Scientific computing produces, transfers, and stores massive amounts of single- and double-precision floating-point data, making this a domain that can greatly benefit from data compression. To gain insight into what makes an effective lossless compression algorithm for such data, we generated over nine million algorithms and selected the one that yields the highest compression ratio on 26 datasets. The resulting algorithm, called SPDP, comprises four data transformations that operate exclusively at word or byte granularity. Nevertheless, SPDP delivers the highest compression ratio on eleven datasets and, on average, outperforms all but one of the seven compared compressors. An analysis of SPDP's internals reveals how to build effective compression algorithms for scientific data.

Re-pair is a grammar-based compression algorithm. In the poster session of the Data compression Conference 2021, we propose the basic concepts of Parallel Re-pair, a parallel variant of Re-pair that achieves shorter compression time with multi-core CPUs. However, our experimental results show it achieves only 1.6 to 2.4 times faster with 32 processors. In this poster session, we propose practical implementation of Parallel Re-pair with Intel Threading Building Blocks.

Ultrasonic imaging applications require real-time acquisition and processing of huge volume of data. Subsequently, reducing the data storage becomes an essential requirement for applications involving ultrasound technology. compression of the acquired data significantly reduces the storage and also helps in faster data processing. Furthermore, computationally efficient data compression enables real-time data transfer to remote locations for expert analysis. In this study, an efficient implementation of ultrasonic data compression based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is realized on GeForce GT 750M NVIDIA graphical processing unit (GPU) using Open Computing Language (OpenCL). Execution of OpenCL program on GPU allows parallel computing of the compression algorithm to accelerate the computational performance. This study demonstrates that OpenCL implementation of ultrasonic compression algorithm on GPU requires only 0.29 seconds for compressing 33 Mbytes of ultrasonic data into 6.6 Mbytes (80% compression), which makes it suitable for real-time ultrasonic imaging applications.

This paper presents an image compression algorithm for gray scale images, based on neural networks. According to this algorithm the image will be first decomposed into Hadamard set of functions and second, the coefficients from the decomposition will be dynamically clustered by a newly proposed Dynamic Adaptive Clustering Method (DACM). We show that DACM converges to approximate the optimum solution based an the least sum of squares criterion theoretically and experimentally. We applied the compression method to various gray scale images and show its efficiency in providing high compression rates. In order to show some comparative results for the proposed method, we have chosen the well-known JPEG. its algorithm has similar structure and therefore is a good basis for comparison. The results from the gray scale images experiments are in favor of the proposed method.

In order to achieve the best and most relevant performance in the field of lossless data compression, but also in order to deepen and refine the results obtained by the type of data to which the compression and decompression operation is applied, this work focuses on compression using the Q-coder, which is a relatively new and less-used coder than the QM-coder, which largely uses the same principles, except that the QM -coder is better known, being mainly used in the JPEG standard. Based on coding and decoding principles using the Q-Coder, its compression performances are compared with other similar compression methods, techniques and algorithms by applying compression to text files in both English and Romanian languages but also on other types of data (images) that allow efficient storage of information in the memory of desktop, mobile or portable computing systems. The experimental results obtained for the compression performance differ significantly depending on the inner characteristics and statistical particularities of each studied natural language. The article interprets these comparative tests and highlights the subsequent differences in compression performance, providing useful conclusions and recommendations, which can be extended to texts from different other natural languages.

We present a novel lossless image compression algorithm. It achieves better compression than popular lossless image formats like PNG and lossless JPEG 2000. Existing image formats have specific strengths and weaknesses: e.g. JPEG works well for photographs, PNG works well for line drawings or images with few distinct colors. For any type of image, our method performs as good or better (on average) than any of the existing image formats for lossless compression. Interlacing is improved compared to PNG, making the format suitable for progressive decoding and responsive web design.

With the increase of image resolution in video application, the memory bandwidth is a critical problem in video coding. An embedded compression algorithm is a technique that can compress the frame data when stored in memory. It is possible to reduce memory requirements. In this paper, we propose a lossless embedded compression algorithm with context-based error compensation to reduce the memory bandwidth requirement. Experimental results have shown at least 50% memory bandwidth reduction on average and the data reduction ratio of the proposed algorithm is up to 5% higher than previously proposed lossless embedded compression algorithm [2].

Many of the ultrasonic NDE and imaging applications require processing of huge amount of data in realtime. compression of acquired data helps to reduce the storage and to rapidly transmit information to remote locations for further analysis. Signal fidelity, computational speed and resource utilization are the major parameters to be considered while designing the architecture for the compression algorithm. The objective of this study is to implement discrete wavelet transform (DWT) based ultrasonic 3D data compression algorithm on a reconfigurable ultrasonic systemon- chip hardware platform targeted for real-time ultrasonic imaging applications. The reconfigurable platform allows analysis of multiple architectures to suit various applications. The algorithm is implemented as a hardware-only design and hardware-software co-design. Both implementations provide a high signal compression ratio of about 98% with good quality signal reconstruction. This study demonstrates that, compressing 33 MBytes of experimental ultrasonic 3D data into 0.4 MBytes requires only one-fourth of a second for hardware-only design, and one minute for hardware-software co-design, making both designs highly suitable for real-time ultrasonic imaging applications.

We present in this paper an extensive comparison of compression methods adapted to impedance and field potential signals of cardiomyocytes. Different combinations of the traditional scheme of lossy compression have been tested and other original methods such as compressed sensing were implemented as well. All algorithms are assessed on several criteria such as compression ratio, distortion of the data, etc. We show that the selected method presents the ability and reliability to compress sensitive data with a compression ratio greater than 5: 1 while preserving the relevant information content of the recorded data.

Summary form only given. A new delta compression algorithm most suitable for RISC binary programs of embedded systems is presented. Conventional delta algorithms are mainly suitable for character codes. These codes compact only the same strings found in both the base and version files as copy commands. Furthermore, in the case of RISC binary programs, the delta file is encoded by many repetitions of short copy length and added data. The proposed algorithm compacts the repetitions of same instruction codes found in both the base and version files and the difference values of register changing. © 2003 IEEE.
