Partial run-time reconfigurability of current FPGAs has been shown to be beneficial in many application domains. However, utilization of this feature is limited by the time it takes to reconfigure a selected part of an FPGA. This is commonly addressed by compression of a configuration bitstream, often using LZSS algorithm. To allow speeding up the reconfiguration also in self-adaptive architectures, bitstream compression has to be done within FPGA. Therefore, this paper presents a novel architecture of an LZSS compression engine that is able to achieve very low resource utilization or throughput several times higher than similar architectures, while keeping the other parameter as well as compression ratio at acceptable level. The presented architecture is generic, thus the user can tune the input token size and the size of buffers to achieve desired characteristics. The paper also includes an evaluation of a trade-off among the size of input token, the size of buffers utilized in LZSS algorithm, and a compression ratio for several configuration bitstreams. This evaluation can help the user to select the right set of parameters for the architecture.

This paper examines the problem of of developing a loss-less compression scheme for data from a nano-satellite being developed by the University of Saskatchewan Space Design team, the USST-Sat. The benefit of compressing scientific data from the satellite will be an increased ability to perform experiments and downlink the results. Goals for the compression scheme are to maximize space savings and result in a net energy savings over storing and transmitting uncompressed data. Our evaluations show that the custom scheme that we developed, called USST-Compress, performs compression as well as or better than the generic compression schemes evaluated, and additionally results in better net energy savings.

The increasing growth of embedded networking applications has created a demand for high-performance logging systems capable of storing huge amounts of high-bandwidth, typically redundant data. An efficient way of maximizing the logger performance is doing a real-time compression of the logged stream. In this paper we present a flexible high-performance implementation of the LZSS compression algorithm capable of processing up to 50 MB/s on a Virtex-5 FPGA chip. We exploit the independently addressable dual-port block RAMs inside the FPGA chip to achieve an average performance of 2 clock cycles per byte. To make the compressed stream compatible with the ZLib library [1] we encode the LZSS algorithm output using a fixed Huffman table defined by the Deflate specification [2]. We also demonstrate how changing the amount of memory allocated to various internal tables impacts the performance and compression ratio. Finally, we provide a cycle-accurate estimation tool that allows finding a trade-off between FPGA resource utilization, compression ratio and performance for a specific data sample.

Internet is evolving. How the content is generated has changed and currently, users and readers of a site can create content. They can express themselves showing their feelings or opinions commenting diverse stories or other users' comments in social news websites. This fact has led to negative side effects: the appearance of troll users and their contents seeking deliberately controversy. In this paper we propose a new method to filter trolling comments using compression models. Normally, Vector Space Model representation use is quite common but these filters can be attacked. To this end, we validate our approach with data from 'Meneame', a popular Spanish social news site, training several compression models, showing that our method can maintain high accuracy rates whilst making such filters difficult to defeat.

In this paper, we propose a compression method that allows for the efficient storage of large amounts of CAN traffic data, which is needed for the forensic investigations of accidents caused by cyber attacks on vehicles. compression of recorded CAN traffic also reduces the time (or bandwidth) needed to off-load that data from the vehicle. In addition, our compression method allows analysts to perform log analysis on the compressed data, therefore, it contributes to reduced analysis time and effort. We achieve this by performing semantic compression on the CAN traffic logs, rather than simple syntactic compression. Our compression method is lossless, thus preserving all information for later analysis. Besides all the above advantages, the compression ratio that we achieve is better than the compression ratio of state-of-the-art syntactic compression methods, such as gzip.

A power-efficient modular wireless platform has been designed for prototyping and pre-clinical evaluations of neural recording implants. This Kit for Designing Implants (KDI) is separated in function specific modules of 34x34mm which can be assembled as needed. This paper presents the design of new modules for this existing wireless KDI platform. These modules cover the functionalities of electrical stimulation for BCI neurofeedback, impedance spectroscopy for monitoring tissue reaction around implanted electrodes and a real-time lossless data compression algorithm for ECoG signals. This algorithm has been implemented using two different hardware solutions and its performances compared. The design and evaluation of these modules are a first step towards the inclusion of these functionalities into the next generation of WIMAGINE (R) implants.

This paper focuses on the data compression for fronthaul link in cloud radio access network (C-RAN). We introduce a linear predictive coding (LPC) based compression algorithm, which includes three main modules, linear predictor, piecewise quantizer and arithmetic coding. The linear predictor is used to eliminate redundancies caused by the correlations of LTE signals. According to the distribution characteristics of the output from the linear predictor, a piecewise quantizer is designed to decrease the quantization noise. To get extra coding gain, arithmetic coding is applied based on the output codebook from the piecewise quantizer. Furthermore, an alphabet reconstruction scheme is proposed to reduce the complexity of arithmetic encoding and decoding. Omitting the up/down-sampling and low-pass filtering operation in traditional schemes, our solution has simpler structure, but demonstrates better compression performance with comparable computational complexity. Remarkably, our scheme presents strong flexibility to different load ratios. Taking 40% load ratio as an example, within 2% error vector magnitude (EVM) distortion, our algorithm can achieve 23% compression ratio for uplink and 17% compression ratio for downlink, which has nearly 15% gain compared with the traditional algorithm.

Data compression algorithms are used in process plants to store and transmit data for analysis purposes. Amount of data is increasing in process plants due to advances in automation and process monitoring technologies. Process data historians are used in plants to store, manage, retrieve and analyze process data. Process data historians use data compression algorithms to effectively manage large amount of data. Best practiced compression algorithm in process data historians has a severe drawback that it significantly alters the statistical properties of reconstructed data;this results in incorrect analysis results which have financial and safety implications for the process plants. Proposed compression algorithm is designed to preserve the critical statistical properties for process data analysis which supports operational decision making in process plants. Case studies are presented on real plant data and simulated data to compare the performance of proposed algorithm with best practiced algorithm used in process data historians.

This paper proposes a universal variable-length lossless compression algorithm based on fountain codes. The compressor concatenates the Burrows-Wheeler block sorting transform (BWT) with a fountain encoder, together with the closed-loop iterative doping algorithm. The decompressor uses a Belief Propagation algorithm in conjunction with the iterative doping algorithm and the inverse BWT. Linear-time compression/decompression complexity and competitive performance with respect to state-of-the-art compression algorithms are achieved.

It has been demonstrated with recent software implementations of context modeling the capability of PPM (Prediction by Partial Matching) [1] type of algorithms to achieve very high compression rates. However, the cost is high in terms of computational complexity and low speed-Hardware implementations of compression algorithms are capable of increasing compression speed by at least an order of magnitude compared with same compression methods implemented in software. In this paper we investigate and study the issues related to the simplification of one PPM type of algorithms, the PPMC [2] to achieve high performance.
