Modern Biotechnology produces large amount of genomic data. The explosion of DNA data has given a challenge for understanding genomic structure, the disk storage and computation. It is essential for the development of efficient compression techniques to handle genomic data storage. Data compression is used to store the data in less memory. The properties of DNA sequence offer a chance to build DNA specific compression algorithms. In this paper, a novel compression technique is proposed for genomic data. In the first stage, each base in DNA sequence is converted into binary form using 2-bit encoding system. On the resultant binary string, A Modified run length encoding is applied. The output is compressed again using Huffman encoding technique in second stage. The encoded sequence is converted into ASCII characters. This technique is quite simple and effective.

This paper presents a new video compression algorithm with improved compression performance. The proposed algorithm works with any existing compression algorithm to provide added compression. This kind of series application of algorithm with existing algorithms provides flexibility it terms of implementation and integration with existing products. The concept proposed in this paper uses the concept of quadrature carrier multiplexing in the digital domain to compress alternate frames on quadrature digital virtual carriers to reduce the size of the video. Since the algorithm is generic it can be applied to any packets or chunks of data. Experiments were performed to quantitatively evaluate the performance of the proposed compression algorithm. The results of the experiments showed that using the proposed algorithm with existing MPEG-4 compression yields 50% compression over MPEG-4 standard without any perceivable change in the video quality especially at higher resolutions.

Several algorithms for accurate circular target localization can be used in optical-electronic measurement systems. In this paper we examine the effects of compression artifacts on the measurement results. We consider image acquisition model of optical-electronic measurement systems and use it to compare accuracy of widely used center of gravity (CoG) algorithm in the presence of compression artifacts. Several compression algorithms are studied in order to determine their influence on the measurement results, including original algorithm for image coding with region of interest (ROI) support.

This paper proposes an improvement over Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) compression algorithm by employing a new method that uses exponential decay (ED) as a tool to manage and remove infrequently used entries in the LZW dictionary. The presented results demonstrate that ED may be an efficient tool to manage and refresh the LZW dictionary. The achieved compression ratio is higher than in the traditional methods like Dictionary Reset DR and Least Recently used LRU. The experimental results demonstrate that the dictionary refresh by the ED may provide higher compression ratio, compared with the original LZW algorithm. In order to investigate the benefits of ED method, it is compared with some other way of LRU-based enhancements. In particular, we consider a LRU-like LZW scheme with Huffman coding of difference from last used word.

The development of a neurologically-oriented mobile health system involves significant challenges in terms of the proper sensing and efficient transmission of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, and the faithful reconstruction of these signals at the receiving node. EEG compression has been widely used to reduce storage requirements, improve the real time processing of the sensed signals, and provide a better and timely feedback to the concerned patients. The non-stationarity of the EEG signals and the large volumes of data being continuously processed mandate the development of data reduction schemes that provide a good tradeoff between compression performance and the preservation of the signal quality and integrity. To this end, we propose in this work a dynamic and effective compression approach for EEG data that relies on a sequence of compression and decompression phases to optimize the compression rate while maintaining a distortion level below a target threshold. Simulation results using real EEG data segments show that even with stringent quality requirements, a notable compression ratio can be attained with minimal processing overhead.

Power signal implies useful messages to discover working status of submersible motors, but it should be compressed efficiently before transmitted because of the huge data. Based on the approximate sinusoidal characteristic of power signal, sinusoidal compression algorithm is proposed which references four-parameter sine fitting algorithm and static Huffman compression algorithm. For power signal with sampling frequency of 10kHz, the compression ratio can be as high as 2.5 by Sinusoidal compression algorithm, while only 1.5 by normal static Huffman algorithm. Simulation signal is generated based on real power signal, and slot harmonics are also concluded which are related with the motor speed. Simulation results implied that the compression ratio by sinusoidal compression algorithm is better than that of the static Huffman or other common power signal compression methods.

The existent problem of the weather radar data lies in its too large data which is not conducive to its storage and transmission. This paper put forward a hybrid compression algorithm of the weather radar data that consists of three steps including pre-compression, lossy compression and lossless compression. Firstly, the paper introduced the radar data's types and characteristics, analyzing the pre-compression algorithm; Secondly, according to the practical requirements of the diverse users, it proposed the adoption of lossless compression and lossy compression algorithm for the data; Finally, the flow chart of mixed compression algorithm was presented and verified based on the actual data.

The popularity of location-acquisition devices has led to a rapid increase in the amount of trajectory data collected. The large volume of trajectory data causes the difficulties of storing and processing the data. Various trajectory compression methods are therefore proposed to deal with these problems. In this paper, we overview the existing road-network-constrained trajectory compression methods and propose a novel classification based on the features leveraged by them. We also propose new methods that fill in the research blanks indicated by the classification. We conduct a thorough comparison among the existing and new road-network-constrained trajectory compression methods. The performances of the methods are studied via various metrics on real-world dataset. We make new discoveries regarding the performances and the scalability of existing methods, and provide guidelines of road-network-constrained trajectory compression for various scenarios.

For fast packet classification, the de-facto industry standard is to use Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM) chips where each chip stores one classifier rule and a given packet is checked against all such rules in parallel. In spite of the TCAM advantages, for a large number of rules, the TCAM deployment becomes expensive and the power consumption increases significantly. Therefore, it is desirable to reduce the number of TCAM rules while retaining the original classification semantics. In this work, we present efficient graph-based algorithms and data structures that allow us to capture the rule ordering relationships and iteratively compress the TCAM rules. Through extensive experiments, we show that our algorithm achieves 75% reduction of firewall rule sets on an average and even achieves an additional 24% compression on the output rule set of the state-of-the-art solutions.

Overdrive technique is mandatory for liquid crystal display (LCD) to mitigate the motion blur phenomenon. As the display resolution increases, the image data should be highly compressed to reduce the usages of frame memory and bandwidth. Since current high quality compression algorithms inevitably require large embedded memory (line buffer) and complex computations, a low complexity line-buffer-free edge-preserved compression algorithm is proposed in this paper to reserve the edge information for overdrive technique of LCD. Performance evaluations show that the proposed edge-preserved compression achieves above 20% PSNR improvements as compared to the conventional DPCM compression up to 6:1 compression ratio.
