We combine a mask motion detection algorithm with both the WAAVES adaptive compression algorithm resulting into MMWaaves) and a JPEG2000 coder resulting into MMJPEG2000) for the compression of medical images sequences. Several images were compressed using Waaves, MMWaaves, and MMJPEG2000 to observe which tool provided the best visual quality while maintaining a high compression ratio. Compared to Waaves, the MMWaaves achieved compression gains up to 40% for CT scans and 50 % for MRI. In addition, the SSIM values attributed to the compressed images were between 0.96 and 0.988 while the PSNR values were higher than 42. In addition MMWaaves attained a superior performance than MMJPEG2000.

Climate modeling data are usually multidimensional arrays of floating-point numbers. These arrays typically have two or three spatial dimensions and one temporal dimension, describing the evolvement of climate variables in a time span. With the advances of high performance computing, the volume of climate data is expanding exponentially, bringing tough challenges for climate data archiving and sharing. In this paper, we propose a lossless compression algorithm for the time-spatial climate floating-point arrays. Our compression algorithm can eliminate more data redundancy efficiently through adaptive prediction, XOR-differencing, and multi-way compression. In addition, static regions, which are very common in climate data, can be identified and compressed more efficiently. Moreover, to utilize the multi-cores on modern computers, we proposed a method to parallelize our compression algorithm. Evaluations demonstrate that single thread version of our compression method can achieve the best balance in compression ratios, deflating throughputs and inflating throughputs. And the parallel version can achieve 800 MB/s deflating throughputs and over 2600 MB/s inflating throughputs on a 16-core server.

Header compression techniques can improve the speech quality of VoIP applications. However, its deployment over wireless mesh environments may not offer much improvement, since the wireless and multi-hop characteristics of such a network impose a high packet loss rate. In this work, we propose a new approach for header compression, using packet aggregation to cooperate with the header compression scheme. Simulation results show that the new cooperative approach can decrease significantly the packet loss, impacting positively on the speech quality.

Significant work has been performed on encrypting images and compressing images as two separate problems, but traditional encryption techniques generally degrade the compression ratio. To circumvent these issues, two methods have been used. The first employs known encryption algorithms on compressed image data. The second develops compression algorithms which work well for encrypted data. The contribution of this paper is using alpha rooting to perform simultaneous compression and encryption. This achieves improved compression performance in terms of computational complexity and compression ratio. Results are shown for 2 of the well known benchmark images, using the well known JPEG image compression standard to demonstrate the effectiveness of alpha rooting for simultaneous encryption and compression.

In this article, we present a novel word-based lossless compression algorithm for text files which uses a semi-static model. We named our algorithm as Multi-stream Word-based compression Algorithm (MWCA), because it stores the compressed forms of the words in three individual streams depending on their frequencies in the text. It also stores two dictionaries and a bit vector as a side information. In our experiments MWCA obtains compression ratio over 3,23 bpc on average and 2,88 bpc on files larger than 50 MB. If a variable length encoder like Huffman Coding is used after MWCA, given ratios will reduce to 2,63 and 2,44 bpc respectively. With the advantage of its multi-stream structure MWCA could become a good solution especially for storing and searching big text data.

The communication system is essential for the devices used in IoT. Nevertheless, the consumption caused by transmitting and receiving data is a concern in many scenarios. That is due to these devices commonly having limited energy and computational capacities. Transmission of redundant or irrelevant samples frequently wastes the device’s resources. Furthermore, Storing a large amount of redundant data could consume storage space and not offer any benefit. Data compression (DC) methods are a potential solution. DC could reduce communication usage and storage demand. This research proposes the Training Swing Door Trending (TSDT) for being implemented in IoT Devices. TSDT is a new algorithm that improves the classic Swing Door Trending (STD). They represent the data by trend lines and have a constant computational complexity. TSDT has a training step for the automatic configuration of its parameters. This article additionally presents the compression Factor (C-Score), a new quality metric to analyze the compression results in lossy DC methods. C-Score takes as a basis the F-Score, a measure of predictive performance. The C-Score uses the compression and Error metrics to evaluate the compression performance in Lossy algorithms.

Today there is an emerging demand of Internet and network related service to collect the valuable service usage data and process it using data mining methods. In this paper, a generalized scheme for preprocessing and high-density compression of log files is presented. The aim of the method is to provide a base for long-term storage in a form appropriate for direct processing by data mining algorithms. Experiments on real log data show that the differentiated semantic log compression (dslc) methods compress at 2-3%, outperforming general-purpose compression utilities. This paper also demonstrates the flexibility of the pipeline concept by inlaying a field-wise compression algorithm to improve the compression efficiency. The implementation of this scheme was designed for the largest Hungarian Internet content provider.

An image contains large amount of digital data and it is necessary to reduce digital data volume for transmission and preservation by using image compression. This paper mainly concentrates on image compression using Raspberry Pi processor which helps to preserve large number of images and in retaining its quality. Raspberry Pi processor allows the implementation of most widely used 2-D Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) compression method to give the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) format using Open CV platform. JPEG compression algorithm is used to compress the full-color still images which give good human visual perception (HVP) after the compression. Experimental results give the high quality compressed images and it is compared with different quality factors. Implementation of image compression on Raspberry Pi has its real time application of Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs). The proposed method helps MAVs to store large number of images captured by it.

GML, a geographic information coding standard, has been widely used in WebGIS, heterogeneous GIS data sharing, integration, and interoperation. However, its features of large amount of redundancy inherited from XML file structure and geographic information system make a serious obstacle in WebGIS applications. According to the characteristics of GML, a data stream-based compression algorithm GDSC ( GML data stream compression ) was given, which separated the GML into structure data and value data using “Draw Pattern”, replaced the structure data with dictionary table during the separation process, and compressed the structure data and value data respectively to increase compression rate. In order to reduce compression time, GDSC uses two sub-threads for compression, decompression and network transmission.

When dealing with extremely large quantities of data, it is sometimes necessary to make concessions in order to compress the data to a manageable size, a technique known as lossy compression. One example of such a concession is perfect knowledge of the order in which each data element was recorded. When sampling a random variable, it is often the case that the values measured are more important than the order in which they appear. We have designed a lossy compression scheme that capitalizes on this fact by representing the order in which a sequence of values was measured with less precision than the values themselves. That is, the compressed data is very accurate and efficiently compressed when order is disregarded. Our algorithm works by encoding the measured values as a non-decreasing sequence and their order of appearance as indices referencing contiguous subsequences or slices of the value list. By changing the criteria used to determine a slice, the recorded order may be made more or less accurate, increasing or decreasing compression ratios respectively. Moreover, values in special ranges can be treated specially; for instance, statistical outliers might be represented exactly, whereas mundane values might be recorded with less precision.
