In this paper, an online heuristic is proposed and evaluated, for managing the dynamic memory in a computer system with Active Disks, by physically co-locating in disk memory or main memory, the data pages being accessed by a computation slice. This enables a runtime system that can offload the corresponding computation slice to the appropriate processing unit at the disk memory or main memory. A modified version of SEQUITUR, an online compression algorithm, is used to identify the affinity among sets of pages in a virtual memory page reference stream, and a page allocation and replacement policy that co-locates these sets of pages in memory is presented. The sets of pages identified by the algorithm are shown to closely match the sets of pages referenced by computation slices, using a suite of data access kernels as benchmarks. The paging policy is evaluated with page traces of micro benchmarks and real applications. In memory constrained environments, with additional memory at the disk, most of the benchmarks see improved performance, due to fewer page faults. The paging heuristic can co-locate 50% of the affinity sets on average and can offload tip to 100% of the computation to disk, while the number of page faults are comparable to that of the LRU paging policy.

We propose a new and efficient method to develop secure image-encryption techniques. The new algorithm combines two techniques: encryption and compression. In this technique, a wavelet transform was used to decompose the image and decorrelate its pixels into approximation and detail components. The more important component (the approximation component) is encrypted using a chaos-based encryption algorithm. This algorithm produces a cipher of the test image that has good diffusion and confusion properties. The remaining components (the detail components) are compressed using a wavelet transform. This proposed algorithm was verified to provide a high security level. A complete specification for the new algorithm is provided. Several test images are used to demonstrate the validity of the proposed algorithm. The results of several experiments show that the proposed algorithm for image cryptosystems provides an efficient and secure approach to real-time image encryption and transmission.

Advances in networking technologies and audio compression algorithms are enabling a revolution in the way music is sold and distributed. Today, one acquires recorded music by purchasing a physical music carrier: a record, tape or CD. In the future, we will acquire music by transferring bits from a server in the network. This will create a demand for a variety of new networked audio devices, but will also introduce new challenges in copyright protection. In this paper we review some of the technologies which will be changing the audio business and describe some of the prototype audio devices being developed at AT&T Labs - Research.

Despite the existence of the current standard for still image compression namely JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), alternative techniques for image compression are being investigated due to the need for fast and high quality storage and transmission of large datasets for distribution through the Internet or in CD-ROM. The use of the wavelet transform for multi-resolution pyramid decomposition of images for data compression and transmission has already been successfully employed by a number of researchers using the common frame of linear subband filtering techniques. However, to achieve a desired compression ratio for a specific class of images, an optimized compression algorithm needs to be developed by considering all stages, i.e. from initial transform mapping to final encoding. This paper addresses the suitability and requirement of further development of a wavelet pyramid coding in compressing color images, specifically the color Visible Human digital photographic dataset. The distinct advantages of a newly developed adaptive vector quantization (VQ) over commonly used scalar quantization and conventional VQ of the wavelet decomposed error pyramids are also discussed.

Automatic recognition of emotions in speech has attracted the attention of the research community in recent years. Some of the most relevant proposed applications of it are in call-centers. In these scenarios the speech is distorted by compression algorithms. The effects of such distortion on the performance of systems for automatic recognition of emotions must be assessed. In this study these effects are evaluated independently of any other distortions generated by the communications channel. Several state-of-the-art codecs are used to compress the speech signals of two emotional speech databases. The databases used are the Berlin Database of Emotional Speech and the enterface05. The methodology considers voiced and unvoiced segments of the speech separately. Spectral, cepstral, noise and Non-Linear Dynamics (NLD) measures are used to characterize the segments. Finally, a classifier based on a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) is used to identify the emotion. The results indicate that voiced segments are less affected by the compression than unvoiced ones in terms in classification accuracy. They also show that the bandwidth of the analyzed signals is an important factor in the classification results.

This paper presents a compression algorithm for dynamic data, the size of which keeps on increasing rapidly. It is a memory efficient data compression technique comprising of a block approach that keeps the data in compressed form as long as possible and enables the data to be appended to the already compressed text. The algorithm requires only a minimal decompression for supporting update of data using a little preprocessing which reduces the unnecessary time spent in compression-decompression to support update by the algorithms deigned till now to a minimum. Further, the text document can be modified as required without decompressing and again compressing the whole document. The paper also presents the design of the required data structures for our algorithm with performance results.

Data compression algorithms are used to reduce the redundancy and storage requirement for data. Data compression is also an efficient approach to reduce communication costs by using available bandwidth effectively. Over the last decade we have seen an unprecedented explosion in the amount of digital data transmitted via the Internet in the form of text, images, video, sound, computer programs, etc. If this trend expected to continue, then it will be necessary to develop a compression algorithm that can most effectively use available network bandwidth by compressing the data at maximum level. Along with this it will also important to consider the security aspects of the compressed data transmitting over Internet, as most of the text data transmitted over the Internet is very much vulnerable to an attack. So, we are presenting an intelligent, reversible transformation technique that can be applied to source text that improve algorithm ability to compress and also offer a sufficient level of security to the transmitted data.

Data compression algorithms are used to reduce the redundancy, storage requirement and efficiently reduce communication costs. Data Encryption is used to protect our data from unauthorized users. Due to the unprecedented explosion in the amount of digital data transmitted via the Internet, it has become necessary to develop a compression algorithm that can effectively use available network bandwidth and also taking into account the security aspects of the compressed data transmitting over Internet. This paper presents an encoding technique that offers high compression ratios. An intelligent and reversible transformation technique is applied to source text to improve the capability of algorithms to compress the transmitted data. The results prove that the proposed method performs better than many other popular techniques with respected to compression ratio and the speed of compression and requires some additional processing on the server/nodes.

The time it takes to reconfigure FPGAs can be a significant overhead for reconfigurable computing. In this paper we develop new compression algorithms for FPGA configurations that can significantly reduce this overhead. By using runlength and other compression techniques, files can be compressed by a factor of 3.6 times. Bus transfer and decompression hardware are also discussed. This results in a single compression methodology which achieves higher compression ratios than existing algorithms in an off-line version, as well as a somewhat lower quality compression approach which is suitable for on-line use in dynamic circuit generation and other mapping-time critical situations.
