Summary form only given. This paper presents LZAC, a new universal lossless data compression algorithm derived from the popular and widely used LZ77 family. The objective of LZAC is to improve the compression ratios of the LZ77 family while still retaining the family's key characteristics: simple, universal and fast in decoding and economical in memory consumption. LZAC presents two new ideas: composite fixed-variable-length coding and offset-difference coding. The two new concepts enable LZAC to improve the LZ family's compression ratios further without using the complex and slow adaptive arithmetic coding or Huffman coding. The Calgary corpus was used to evaluate LZAC's performance. The results show that LZAC achieves a non-weighted average compression ratio of 2.94 bits/char in an 8-kbyte window which surpasses the performance of any other compression algorithm in the LZ77 and LZ78 families.

Approximate multipliers have recently attracted great attention due to their substantially lower energy consumption and area overhead. But previous approximate multiplier designs are mainly focused on the design of approximate compressors, little attention is paid to the compression strategy of partial product matrix. This paper proposes an optimized universal compression scheme for the compressor-based approximate multiplier. When we apply the new compression scheme to the state-of-the-art compressors, the accuracy of the approximate multiplier is largely increased and fewer exact adders are needed. To prove the efficiency of the new compression strategy, an 8-bit and a 12-bit approximate multipliers are designed using Verilog and synthesized under the TSMC 40-nm CMOS technology. Compared to the state-of-the-art, the experimental results indicate that the mean error distance of 8-bit multiplier decreases by 19.6%, with area and power reduced by 5.38% and 2.38% respectively; 12-bit multiplier has a reduction of 18.1% for mean error distance, with area and power reduced by 6.29% and 3.24% respectively. Moreover, application to image processing is presented, which shows that the proposed approximate multiplier has a better performance.

We introduce an EDIF netlist graph-based compression algorithm which is lossy with respect to the original byte stream but lossless in terms of the circuit information it contains. The algorithm builds on the graph mining tool SUBDUE. Our algorithm, CEDIF (Compressed EDIF), compresses the EDIF file to a size about 39% of the size of the compressed file resulting from the state-of-the-art PAQ text compression algorithm and to about 85% of the size of a GRAPHITOUR-like graph compression algorithm.

The compression algorithm developed for METIS arises from the standard CCSDS 123.0-r-1 [1], a lossless data compressor suitable for multispectral and hyperspectral imagers and sounders. This paper presents an extension of the standard to handle lossless compression specifically tailored to solar corona images. The main contributions of this paper are the following: the adaptation to the radial geometry of solar corona images through a remapping process called "radialization" and the ability to exploit three-dimensional image compression of the standard through the compression of a multi-temporal data cube composed by successive acquisitions. The development of the algorithm took care of many aspects based on the geometry and the nature of the expected acquisitions;this adaptation process leads to a significant increase in compression performance through routines resulting very light from a computational point of view, which is a key aspect for on-board applications.

Efficient utilization of energy is a core area of research in wireless sensor networks. Data compression methods to reduce the number of bits to be transmitted by the communication module will significantly reduce the energy requirement and increase the lifetime of the sensor node. This paper divides WSN applications into two categories, slowly-varying applications and non-slowly-varying applications, and indicates that the study of slowly-varying data compression algorithm is significance. Through analysis the probability distribution of monitored data, a simple lossless data compression algorithm namely Normal Distribution Encoding Algorithm specifically designed for slowly-varying data is proposed in this paper. Compared with the typical lossless compression algorithm, the proposed algorithm indicated better compression ratio and performance.

This paper introduces a new effective coding technique for the compression of Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals using the wavelet transform. It is based on generating a binary stream of 1's and 0's that encodes the structure of wavelet coefficients. This binary stream is compressed using a modified run length encoding. The effects of signal length, finite word length representation of the wavelet coefficients and threshold levels selection on the quality of the reconstructed signal that is measured on PRD and compression ratio measures are investigated. The technique is tested for the compression of normal and abnormal ECG signals extracted from MIT-BIH database. The performance parameters of the proposed coding algorithm are measured and a compression ratio of 23.5:1 with a PRD of 1.53% is achieved.

Normal maps play an important role in computer 3D graphics to express pseudo roughness of the surface with a small amount of polygon data. In this paper, a highly efficient normal map compression algorithm is proposed based on an estimation model to predict the quality of the images rendered with the compressed normal maps. The optimal encoding is achieved by minimizing the predicted mean square error (MSE) employing vector quantization (VQ). In addition, encoding and decoding time is fast enough for practical usage. Experimental results demonstrate that the algorithm proposed in this paper yields better compression performance than the other algorithms in the literatures.

Utilization of energy efficiently has been a main area of research in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). As sensors are battery operated, battery cannot be recharged frequently in the remote location where sensors are deployed. So energy optimization is of paramount importance to increase the battery life and hence the sensor network lifetime. Data compression can be an effective tool to reduce power consumption. In this paper, we have proposed a modified version of Huffman coding (MHC) algorithm for WSNs. We have taken data set of temperature variation from a sensing node. The compression ratio obtained is up to 64.325%, 60.51% and 63.08% for Le-Genepi deployment, Patrouille des Glaciers and St-Bernard deployment respectively.

The problem inherent to any digital image (or digital video) system is the large amount of bandwidth required for transmission or storage. This has driven the research area of image compression to develop more complex algorithms that compress images to lower data rates with better fidelity. One approach that can be used to increase the execution speed of these complex algorithms is to implement the algorithms on a parallel supercomputer. The authors address the parallel implementation of the JPEG still image compression standard on the MasPar MP-1, a massively parallel SIMD computer. They demonstrate that the greatest difficulty lies not with the compression algorithm per se, but with the speed bottleneck that arises in the output of the compressed image. They develop a parallel output algorithm which addresses this problem and present results which show real-time performance on 1024/spl times/1024 images.< >

Limited energy and memory resources are important constraints in the design of an embedded system. compression is a useful and widely employed mechanism to reduce the memory requirements of the system. As the leakage energy of a memory system increases with its size and because of the increasing contribution of leakage to overall system energy, compression also has a significant effect on reducing energy consumption. However, storing compressed data / instructions has a performance and energy overhead associated with decompression at runtime. The underlying compression algorithm, the corresponding implementation of the decompression and the ability to reuse decompressed information critically impact this overhead. In this paper, we explore the influence of compression on overall memory energy using a commercial embedded Java virtual machine (JVM) and a customized compression algorithm. Our results show that compression is effective in reducing energy even when considering the runtime decompression overheads; for most applications.
