This paper discusses how protocol header compression schemes can be implemented in the Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) as part of the GSM recommendations. We briefly describe details of the two compression algorithms currently selected for implementation by the recommendations committee, followed by an explanation of how these schemes can be implemented in the SGSN.

The capacity of on-chip trace buffers employed for embedded logic analysis limits the observation window of a debug experiment. To increase the debug observation window, we propose a novel architecture for embedded logic analysis based on lossless compression. The proposed architecture is particularly useful for in-field debugging of custom circuits that have sources of nondeterministic behavior such as asynchronous interfaces. In order to measure the tradeoff between the area overhead and the increase in the observation window, we also introduce a new compression ratio metric. We use this metric to quantify the performance gain of three lossless compression algorithms suitable for embedded logic analysis.

We present a model-based approach to encode multiple synchronized video streams which show a dynamic scene from different viewpoints. By utilizing 3D scene geometry, we compensate for motion and disparity by transforming all video images to object textures prior to compression. A 4D SPIHT wavelet compression algorithm exploits interframe coherence in both temporal and spatial dimension. Unused texels increase the compression, and a shape mask can be omitted at the cost of higher decoder complexity. The proposed coding scheme is intended for use in conjunction with free-viewpoint video and 3D-TV applications.

We propose a high-speed lossless data compression algorithm, named SnappyR. Improved upon Snappy, we design new structures of the literal and the match tokens to achieve better compression ratio than Snappy. Numerous benchmarks are conducted on different sets of data corpus. The evaluations consistently show that SnappyR provides a better compression ratio comparing to Snappy, as well as LZ4, and better than LZO in most cases. Although a little slower than Snappy, the compression and decompression speeds of SnappyR are still much higher than entropy encoding based compression algorithms, such as ZSTD, deflate or Zlib. Thus, SnappyR can become another viable replacement or alternative to Snappy, LZ4 or LZO for computing and storage systems and applications, where high-speed lossless data compression is needed. More details about SnappyR algorithm design and performance evaluation can be found at [1].

When attempting to compare different compression algorithms used in multiband compression hearing aids, or different parameter settings of a given compression algorithm, there is a need to compare equivalent amounts of compression. Since there are several parameters that influence the actual amount of compression that occurs, it is desirable to know which set of parameters will create the least perceptual difference from the original signal for a given amount of compression. Unfortunately, there is not a well defined approach for determining the amount of compression that has been imparted to a signal. Two degree of compression metrics are proposed that can be used to determine the amount of compression by direct analysis of the audio signal before and after compression. These metrics give excellent results in predicting the ratings of subject-based testing on the audio quality of several different audio segments across several parameter variations.

Data compression is very important today and it will be even more important in the future. Textual data use only limited alphabet - total number of used symbols (letters, numbers, diacritics, dots, spaces, etc.). In most languages, letters are joined into syllables and words. All three approaches are useful in text compression, but none of them is the best for any file. This paper describes a variant of algorithm for evolving alphabet from characters, 2-grams and 3-grams, which is optimal for compression of text files. We used Simulated Annealing for this evolution of the alphabet. The efficiency of the new variant will be tested on four compression algorithms. The achieved results are very promising.

This article introduces a new improved Biological sequence compression algorithm which is based on Variable length LUT and LZ77 algorithm and also it combines a LUT-based pre-coding routine and LZ77 compression routine. This algorithm can gains compression ratio lower than the previous Biological Sequence compression algorithm because due to the dynamic creation of look up table with in the encoding and decoding process. The overheads are reduces to maintain look up table and also the execution time decreases, other advantage are leaser memory occupation and easier implementation.

We present a framework for lossy compression of ultrasound RF data. The proposed scheme can be deployed either before or after the receiver beamformer. It performs a two-dimensional decorrelation in both the lateral and axial directions. The decorrelation in the lateral direction is done using a Karhun-loeve like transform, e.g., DCT or Hadamard. The decorrelation in the axial direction is done using customized orthogonal wavelet packets that are optimized for a particular ultrasound probe. The effectiveness of the compression algorithm for both pre-beamformer and post-beamformer compression is established by evaluating the performance on a set of simulated ultrasound signals.

The proliferation of malware has been causing great harm to computer and information systems. Traditional signature-based approaches fail to detect obfuscated malware and unknown malware. We present a preliminary study on classifying with compression of program instructions for malware detection. The code structure information was utilized to compress. The disassembled code is converted to its intermediate representation. We extract the opcode to form the stream for prediction by partial matching (PPM). The binaries are classified with this statistical compression algorithm. The preliminary experiment shows that our method can efficiently detect malware with high accuracy and low false positive rate.

Image-based rendering (IBR) systems create photorealistic views of complex 3D environments by resampling large collections of images captured in the environment. The quality of the resampled images increases significantly with higher image capture density. Thus, a significant challenge in interactive IBR systems is to provide both fast image access along arbitrary viewpoint paths and efficient storage of large image data sets. We describe a compression scheme based on a spatial image hierarchy that meets the requirements of interactive IBR walkthroughs. By exploiting image coherence over the entire image capture plane, we achieve compression performance similar to traditional motion-compensated schema, e.g., MPEG, yet allow image access along arbitrary paths. Furthermore, by exploiting graphics hardware for image resampling, we achieve interactive display rates during IBR walkthroughs.
