Ultrasonic NDE and imaging applications utilize a large amount of information. Most of these applications demand real-time data processing with low power consumption. compression of the collected ultrasonic data helps to reduce the storage, as well as rapid data transmission to remote locations for expert analysis. The objective of this study is to develop embedded system-on-chip architectures for ultrasonic data compression, and analyze the performance of different design methods according to the application requirements. The system is implemented using Xilinx Zynq System-on-Chip (SoC), which combines both ARM processor and field-programmable gate array (FPGA) on the same chip. The major parameters analyzed in this study are signal fidelity, hardware resource utilization and computational processing speed. The hardware and software co-design implementation is about five times faster compared to software only implementation using Zynq SoC.

Multimedia Information Retrieval is currently a hot research topic due the popularity of the World Wide Web and the huge amount of multimedia data available. There exists an increasing interest to design and develop new methods and techniques to represent and classify this kind of information. Among the different sources of multimedia information currently available, we have decided to work with music audio files. Three different music representations (binary code, wave information, and SAX) have been used to study how the selection of a particular representation could affect a clustering process based on a set of similarity clusters. Two different algorithms (a hierarchical clustering method based on the quartet tree method and a genetic algorithm) have been applied to automatically perform the clustering. A compression distance, the Normalized compression Distance (NCD), has been used to generate the similarities among the music files. This distance is parameter-free and widely applicable so we can use it directly with different formats and representations. The paper shows some experimental results using these representations and compares the behavior of both clustering methods.

An improvement scheme, so named the two-pass improved encoding scheme (TIES), for the application to image compression through the extension of the existing concept of fractal image compression (FIC), which capitalizes on the self-similarity within a given image to be compressed, is proposed in this paper. We first briefly explore the existing image compression technology based on FIC, before proceeding to establish the concept behind the TIES algorithm. We then devise an effective encoding and decoding algorithm for the implementation of TIES through the consideration of the domain pool of an image, domain block transformation, scaling and intensity variation, range block approximation using linear combinations, and finally the use of an arithmetic compression algorithm to store the final data as close to source entropy as possible. We then conclude by explicitly comparing the performance of this implementation of the TIES algorithm against that of FIC under the same conditions, in which the TIES algorithm exhibits significantly better compression performance for large images (1024times1024px) compared to the FIC algorithm

With the resolution of video sequences increasing, the memory bandwidth and space requirement has become one bottleneck of a video coding system. Most of previous frame memory compression works merely focused on reducing the averaged bandwidth demand. In this paper, a lossless frame memory compression algorithm for motion estimation in HEVC and the corresponding hardware architecture are described. The compression algorithm is composed of the 64×4 partition compression algorithm and the partition group table based storage scheme. Experimental results demonstrate that, on average, the proposed algorithm reduces 70.1% memory bandwidth and 41% memory space, while saving 59.0% dynamic energy. With TSMC 90nm CMOS logic technology, our algorithm were implemented in a parallel VLSI architecture of compressor and decompressor at the cost of 48.1K and 44.2K respectively in gate-count. The achieved peak throughput is 1.51Gpixel/s, which is sufficient to handle the SHV(8K)@30fps real-time encoding with the level-D reference data reuse scheme.

We address the problem of compression for wireless sensor networks, where each of the sensors has limited power, and acquires data that should be sent to a central node. The final goal is to have a reconstructed version of the sampled field at the central node, with the sensors spending as little energy as possible. We propose a distributed compression algorithm for multihop, distributed sensor networks based on the lifting factorization of the wavelet transform that exploits the natural data flow in the network to aggregate data by computing partial wavelet coefficients that are refined as the data flows towards the central node. A key result of our work is that by performing partial computations we greatly reduce unnecessary transmission, significantly reducing the overall energy consumption.

In image based rendering (IBR), a 3D scene is recorded through a set of photos, and a novel view is rendered by assembling data from the photo set. compression is essential to reduce the huge data amount of IBR. We examine three categories of IBR compression algorithms: the block coder, the reference coder and the high dimensional transform (wavelet) coder. It is observed that the block coder consumes the least computation resource, however, its compression ratio is low. The reference coder achieves a good compression ratio with reasonable computation complexity. The high dimensional wavelet coder achieves the best compression ratio, however, it is also the most complex.

Contour compression is to encode the boundaries of objects and important for object-orient image compression and cartoon-like image compression. In this paper, we propose an advanced algorithm to perform lossy compression for contours. First, we find that among all curves, the 3rd order polynomial is most suitable for contour compression. Second, we suggest that, instead of encoding the coefficients of curves directly, it is more efficient to encode the heights of curves. Moreover, we apply an alternative definition of curvature to find the dominant points. Furthermore, we apply the improved version of adaptive arithmetic coding, including increasing the probabilities of the values with the same sign or with similar amplitudes, to encode the heights of curves. Simulations show that, when the error is similar, the proposed algorithm requires much less number of bits than other existing methods for contour compression.

Block-based compression algorithms have found widespread use in image and video compression standards. algorithms such as JPEG, however, while very effective in compressing continuous tone images, do not perform well in compressing multimedia documents which contain text and graphics. With a growing number of applications using images with a high content of both continuous tone data and text, e.g. color facsimile data and educational videos, requires the need for a good compression algorithm. In this paper we present a modified JPEG algorithm for compressing such mixed-mode images which occur in multimedia documents. The algorithm is based on the classification of a block as a kind of text or an image block depending on its DCT coefficients. There can be anywhere from 2 to 256 classes. With such a classification, the same compression algorithm can be applied except that different quantization matrices are used for the different type of blocks. The compression algorithm also uses different entropy codes for the different type of blocks. Simulation results show that the modified JPEG algorithm achieves upto 3 dB gain in PSNR compared to JPEG on multimedia documents.

In order to prolong the service life of wireless vibration sensors when collecting a large number of high-frequency vibration data, this paper studied the existing vibration data compression algorithms, put forward and analyzed the existing problems, and on this basis, proposed an effective mechanism of K-means clustering-discrete cosine transform (DCT) dual data compression. According to the characteristics of predictive maintenance data, K-means clustering-DCT dual compression algorithm firstly used the K-means algorithm to aggregate and classify vibration data. Then it carried out DCT compression according to the frequency domain characteristics of vibration signals. The verification results showed that the algorithm significantly improved data compression efficiency and reduced redundant data transmission by aggregating vibration data. Besides, under the same amount of data, the algorithm had better application performance after improving the peak signal-to-noise ratio compared with other algorithms.

There has been increased demand for more immersive video content to enhance the Quality of Service. This prompted the need for newer compression algorithms which would retain or even improve the original video quality. This research specifically delves into the implementation of a lossless Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based H.265 video compression. The main employed methods and applied treatments are briefly described. Subsequently, this work's findings are presented in the results sections. The conclusion indicates the effectiveness of (GAN)-based algorithm utilized in the video compression process.
