As government networks migrate towards an Internet protocol version 6 (IPv6) based infrastructure, there is growing concern over the increased operational overhead required by IPv6 packets. IPv6 has twice the overhead of its predecessor, Internet protocol version 4 (IPv4), mainly due to a larger address space. Overhead concerns are further magnified in encrypted networks that employ IP security protocol (IPsec) tunnel-mode security associations (SAs). For example, global information grid (GIG) tactical networks, which are characterized by both bandwidth-constrained and high bit error rate (BER) links, may significantly be impacted by the additional IP header required by IPsec for traffic flow confidentiality. The Internet engineering task force (IETF) has developed various header compression algorithms to reduce the overhead associated with IP packets. Robust header compression (ROHC) and enhanced compression of the real-time transport protocol (ECRTP) mitigate the impact of the IPv6 overhead at the network layer, and help reduce overhead at the transport layer. In this paper, we evaluate the benefits of instantiating header compression in encrypted networks characterized by bandwidth-constrained, high BER links. The results will highlight the benefits of integrating ROHC and ECRTP with IPsec devices for compression of the plaintext upper layer protocols (ULP) headers of IP packets.

With the high resolution instruments, the data collected by the space solar telescope (SST) satellite will be a large volume. Meanwhile, due to the limited storage and down-link capacity, onboard data compression is needed. In this paper, a real time image compression scheme is proposed. According to the requirement of SST and the space environment restriction condition, we adopt the compression algorithm based on Daub 4 wavelet transform with lifting steps, and designed the data compression (DCU) platform with DSP and FPGA. The interfaces and HW/SW designs are given in detail. The system tests show that the performance meets the requirement of SST

In the context of the use of wireless sensor network technology for environmental monitoring, the two main elementary activities of wireless sensor network are data acquisition and transmission. However, transmitting/receiving data are power consuming task. In order to reduce transmission-associated power consumption, we explore data compression by processing information locally. In this article, we evaluate and compare compression algorithms on an ultra-low power microcontroller from Texas Instrument within the MSP430 series used for designing wireless sensor network. We propose and evaluate a new data compression algorithm inspired from run length encoding called K-RLE.

In this paper we propose an x-coordinate point compression method for elliptic curves over F p , where p >; 3 is prime, as an alternative to the classical y-coordinate point compression method. A point P̃ = (x̃, y) will be compressed as P = (x, y) where x has only two bits and, thus, our method allows more compact representations when [log 2 x] >; [log 2 y]+1. Both our compression and decompression algorithms involve solving cubic equations or, in some cases, only computing cube roots modulo a prime, thus being of worst-case complexity O((log 2 p) 4 ). For some particular cases, our compression algorithm can be significantly improved, requiring only two multiplications (thus, being of worst-case complexity O((log 2 p) 2 )).

The future telecommunication systems will be surely characterized by the convergence of mobile technologies and Internet protocols, achieved through a network platform totally based on TCP/IP protocols ("all-IP network").In such a system, both wired and wireless parts are built on a common network platform based on TCP/IP protocol. However, TCP/IP protocol headers overheads are large and need to be compressed to save radio channel bandwidth which is the most expensive and scarce resource of the whole wireless system, especially for some services whose payload size is small. In this paper, a new adaptive robust TCP/IP header compression algorithm for 3G wireless networks is proposed and analyzed. The aim of this algorithm is to adjust the dimension of variable sliding window (VSW) in W-LSB encoding wiith the accurate estimation o wireless channel state to achieve the good balance of compression ratio and error-resistant robustness for the adaptive use in wireless link. We present simulation results that demonstrate the effectiveness of this adaptive algorithm over wireless link.

Huge amount of data recorded during exercise electrocardiography may be stored for further analysis or be transferred to a remote physician through telephone lines. Due to channel limitations, data must be compressed prior to the transfer, In this study, an algorithm suitable for compression of exercise electrocardiography data is proposed. 2-D discrete cosine transformation is applied in the algorithm to make use of the pseudo periodic behavior of the data. To increase the correlation, data is aligned from the R peaks. QRS detection is performed using a fast dyadic wavelet transform. The success rate of the detection algorithm is found to be 99.78%. Uniform scalar quantization is used with a zonal coding method in the coding of 2-D discrete cosine transform coefficients. The performance of the compression algorithm is evaluated in terms of compression ratio, reconstruction error and by comparing the reports of the ST segment depression test applied before the compression and after the reconstruction to inspect whether vital information is preserved.

In recent years, many visions for hitherto considered-futuristic computing applications gained momentum. The vision of smart factories is one example for these trends, which all share a common requirement: the prolific dissemination of sensor information. As wireless communication in smart factories needs to cope with harsh environments, the amount of sensor information produced by sources will likely surpass the communication channel's available capacity. This discrepancy calls for efficient communication and filtering protocols, as well as compression mechanisms, as a foundation for dependable applications. We propose such a compression algorithm that is lossless and tailored towards the requirements of the manufacturing industry. Our algorithm employs a two-step stochastic model that uses lossy compression to extract an approximation from the signal and a separate noise model to accommodate the remaining error. Evaluation results validate that our algorithm achieves better compression rates than existing approaches for several types of real world sensor data from the industry.

This paper examines the opportunity of using compression for accelerating the (re)configuration of FPGA devices, focusing on the choice of compression algorithms, and their hardware implementation cost. As our purpose is the acceleration of the configuration process, estimating the decoder speed also plays a major role in our study. We evaluate a wide range of well-established compression algorithms and we also propose two methods specifically developed for compressing FPGA configuration bitstreams, one based on a static dictionary and the other on arithmetic coding. For the arithmetic coding we propose a statistical model that takes advantage of the particularities of the configuration bitstreams of the Virtex 4 FPGA family. We evaluate the efficiency of the proposed methods along with state of the art compression algorithms on a number of benchmark circuits, some selected from the available open source implementations and some synthetically generated. Our evaluations indicate that using modest resources we can achieve parity and even exceed comercial software in terms of compression ratio, and outperform all other traditional algorithms. All our implemented decompressors are shown to use less than 1.5% of the slices available on the FPGA device.

Compressing program code compiled for VLIW processors to reduce the amount of memory is a necessary means to decrease costs. The main disadvantage of any code compression technique is the system performance penalty because of the extra time required to decode the compressed instructions during run time. In this paper we improve the performance of decoding compressed instructions by using our novel compression technique (LICT: left-uncompressed instruction technique) which can be used in conjunction with any compression algorithm. Furthermore, we adapt a new code compression approach called Burrows-Wheeler (BW) which has been used before in data compression. It significantly reduces the code size compared to state-of-the-art approaches for VLIW processors. Using our LICT in conjunction with the BW algorithm improves the performance explicitly (2.5times) with little impact on the compression ratio (only 3% compression ratio loss).

Transform coefficients carry important data characteristics but can also be compressed significantly in many remote sensing applications. Failures in the several computing facilities that execute lossy compression algorithms and support the transmission of Fourier transform data can corrupt the values beyond recovery at the final destination. Various methods for including fault tolerance at the data processing level are exemplified by describing a protected system that computes the FFT, truncates small coefficients and compresses the remaining nonzero coefficients using lossless arithmetic coding. Algorithmic checks within the FFT and arithmetic encoding and decoding operations are augmented with additional features between and across several subsystems involved in compressing and transmitting the FFT data. End-to-end error detection is achieved in this manner.
