A classic idea to improve text compression is to replace words with references to a text dictionary, either external or stored together with the archive. We advocate for the second option, as even with one language in mind (e.g., English) it is rather impossible to have a single dictionary fitting well different sorts of modern texts. There are basically two problems to solve, which are how to assign codewords to individual words from the parsed text, and how to represent the dictionary compactly. The resulting data are input for a backend compressor. Since in many scenarios texts are decompressed (read) more often than compressed (written), we focus on LZ77 backend compression algorithms, in particular Deflate, used in zip/gzip standards, whose well-known asset is very fast decompression.

A novel coding method is presented for ultrasound image compression in teleultrasound system. The encoder chooses the video signals immediately after the ultrasonic beam forming as the object to be compressed other than the standard video images using in traditional methods. The compression algorithm is based on the 2-D discrete wavelet transform and arithmetic coding. Experiments on several images show satisfying results.

The consultative committee for space data systems (CCSDS) data compression working group has recently adopted a recommendation for image data compression, with a final release expected in 2005. The algorithm adopted in the recommendation consists of a two-dimensional discrete wavelet transform of the image, followed by progressive bit-plane coding of the transformed data. The algorithm can provide both lossless and lossy compression, and allows a user to directly control the compressed data volume or the fidelity with which the wavelet-transformed data can be reconstructed. The algorithm is suitable for both frame-based image data and scan-based sensor data, and has applications for near-Earth and deep-space missions. The standard will be accompanied by free software sources on a future Web site. An application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) implementation of the compressor is currently under development. This paper describes the compression algorithm along with the requirements that drove the selection of the algorithm. Performance results and comparisons with other compressors are given for a test set of space images

The proposed texture compression algorithm is based on a block-wise approach, where each block is subjected to the modified fractal compression method and is partly represented by Haar wavelet or Laplacian pyramid. In our new method, the advantage of the local fractal compression algorithm is taken for 4*4 blocks compressed independently. To overcome the problem of quad tree structure, we use regular partitioning of compressed block to 2*2 range blocks R. The local domain pool for compressed block consists of only one domain block being the whole compressed block D = B. The resulting fractal code is subjected to further compression using Haar wavelet or Laplacian Pyramid.

This paper presents a compression algorithm based on region of interest (ROI) of face to gain a high compressing ratio and to assure the quality of compressed result. First, the ROI including facial features is detected by the FC2VQ (feature correction two-stage vector quantization) algorithm. Then the mask of ROI is calculated. Finally the proposed algorithm is used to compress. The compression ratios of ROI and background can be adjusted randomly according to the requirement. Experimental results show that our algorithm can make the compressing quality of ROI better than that of the background, and the facial features region can be well recognized by eyes

In this paper we present a new watermarking algorithm for joint near-lossless compression and authentication of remote sensing images. The adopted compression algorithm is the standard JPEG-LS algorithm. Our methodology has been designed by integrating into the standard JPEG-LS compression algorithm, by means of a stripe approach, a known authentication technique derived from Fridrich. This procedure points out two advantages: firstly, the produced bit-stream is perfectly compliant with the JPEG-LS standard, secondly, when the image has been decoded, it is always authenticated because information has been embedded in the reconstructed values. Near-lossless coding does not harm authentication procedure and robustness against different attacks is preserved

The application of recent video data compression techniques to speech data is described. In order to effectively apply these techniques, the speech data should be segmented so as to achieve a high degree of correlation between corresponding samples in adjacent speech segments, allowing the formation of a two-dimensional speech "raster" with significant correlation in both dimensions. Several methods for generating such two-dimensional formats are proposed, and the results of applying the hybrid cosine-transform/DPCM compression algorithm [1] and the two-dimensional cosine transform to selected data formats are presented. Also proposed are several hardware configurations for the possible application of these results to narrowband speech processing.

This paper presents a practical and effective image compression system based on wavelet decomposition and contrast sensitive-SVR (support vector regression) for compressing still images. The kernel function in an SVR plays the central role of implicitly mapping the input vector (through an inner product) into a high-dimensional feature space. We study the different wavelet kernel for image compression application. Image quality is measured objectively, using peak signal-to-noise ratio, and subjectively, using perceived image quality. The effects of different wavelet kernels, image contents and compression ratios are assessed. A comparison with JPEG, SPIHT compression system is given. Our results provide a good reference to choose a suitable kernel for image compression application.

Fractal image compression techniques are being developed due to the recognition that fractals can describe natural scenes better than shapes of traditional geometry. One of the most efficient fractal methods is based on iterated function systems (IFS). The basic principle is that an image can be reconstructed by using the self-similarities in the image itself. When encoding an image, the algorithm partitions the image into a number of square blocks (domain blocks). After this there is a new partition into smaller blocks (range blocks). For every range block the best matching domain block is searched among all domain blocks by performing a set of transformations on the blocks. The compression is obtained by storing only the descriptions of these transformations. While rapid compression algorithm exists, the compression process is extremely time consuming. A crucial point in the encoding procedure is to be able to determine the "best matching" domain block for every range block. So, the matching criterion or the distortion measure represents an important part in the encoding process. This paper investigates the collage theorem upon which is built the fractal image compression method in order to determine the best matching measure for fractal compression. The results prove that the linear correlation coefficient gets the best reconstruction image quality in addition to rapid convergence in the decoding. However, different matching criteria are employed between image partitions.

Generally, the best known accepted image compression techniques - such as wavelet based technique - have some obvious weakness to act as on-board real time practical compression technique due to their large processing units and multistage floating coefficients. It is difficult to implement them in compact reliable hardware architecture and achieve high compression performance results suitable for on-board compression systems. On the other hand, high image fidelity of decoded image and its hardware simplicity are important features for on-board real time compression systems. The introduced resampling block coding (RBC) algorithm is a step forward to fulfil some of the features. RBC compression results are significant compared to the set partitioning in - hierarchical trees (SPIHT) wavelet based image compression technique within the near-lossless region. In this article, the results are declared concerning the image fidelity, compression ratio (CR), speed and the maximum grayscale error of the decoded image.
