One of the main concerns of the wide use of video surveillance is the loss of individual privacy. Individuals who are not suspects need not be identified on camera recordings. Mechanisms that protect the identity while ensuring legitimate security needs are necessary. Selectively encrypting objects that reveal identity (e.g., faces or vehicle tags) is necessary to preserve individualspsila right to privacy. This paper presents a compression algorithm independent solution that provides privacy in video surveillance applications. The proposed approach is based on the use of permutation based encryption to hide identity revealing features. The permutation based encryption tolerates lossy compression and allows decryption at a later time. The use of permutation based encryption makes the proposed solution independent of the compression algorithms used. The paper presents the performance of the system when using H.264 video encoding.

This paper presents a dynamic range compression method for improving the contrast of color images. A variable transformation is applied to the input image, depending on the local dependency of the intensity. In this work, we present a local contrast correction algorithm that allows for simultaneous lowlight region and high-light region adjustments, based on multi-scale Gaussian filtering. Also, to minimize the change in color saturation between the input and the output image, we present the linear color restoration method.

In this paper, we present parallel algorithms for lossless data compression based on the Burrows-Wheeler transform (BWT) block-sorting technique. We investigate the performance of using data parallelism and task parallelism for both multi-threaded and message-passing programming. The output produced by the parallel algorithms is fully compatible with their sequential counterparts. To balance the workload among processors we develop a task scheduling strategy. An extensive set of experiments is performed with a shared memory NUMA system using up to 120 processors and on a distributed memory cluster using up to 100 processors. Our experimental results show that significant speedup can be achieved with both data parallel and task parallel methodologies. These algorithms will greatly reduce the amount of time it takes to compress large amounts of data while the compressed data remains in a form that users without access to multiple processor systems can still use.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data collections can cover large areas at high resolution, generating massive amounts of data. Many effective compression techniques exist that can reduce the volume of data for storage and transmission with slight loss of information. This paper addresses a near-lossless three-stage SAR compression scheme. The first stage uses a gradient adaptive lattice filter to decorrelate the data. In the second stage, the residue is then subject to quantization. Finally, the quantized residue is entropy coded.

There has been a significant increase in the number of smartphones and other devices that have been highly useful as a means of communication and entertainment. Therefore, there is a need to secure such devices as the majority of the smartphones that are being sold have been equipped with inbuilt biometric authentication system. Facial features are very diverse and have some kind of similarity with features in other people's faces, especially relatives and siblings. Therefore, there is a need to offload the facial authentication system and the recognition images to the cloud platform for computation. To this end, this research article has analyzed the past works based on the facial image compression paradigm for their improvements and limitations to assist in the implementation of a fast and effective facial image compression technique that will be discussed in detail in the upcoming publications.

We study the problem of compressing a source sequence in the presence of side-information that is related to the source via insertions, deletions and substitutions. We propose a simple algorithm to compress the source sequence when the side-information is present at both the encoder and decoder. A key attribute of the algorithm is that it encodes the edits contained in runs of different extents separately. For small insertion and deletion probabilities, the compression rate of the algorithm is shown to be asymptotically optimal.

Best lossless compression results of color map images have been obtained by dividing the color maps into layers, and by compressing the binary layers separately by using an optimized context tree model that exploits inter-layer dependencies. In this paper, we extend the previous context tree based method to operate on color values instead of the binary layers. We generate an n-ary context tree by constructing a complete tree up to a predefined depth, and then prune out nodes that do not provide improvement in compression to generate sub-optimal context tree with incomplete structure. Experiments show that the proposed method outperforms existing methods for a large set of different color map images

We have designed a VLSI chip for wavelet image compression which is especially suited for CCD area sensors as well as for new technology approaches in CMOS image sensors. The design has been developed for maximal resolutions of 3072 times 2048 pixels. The used compression algorithm gives a PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio) of up to 39 dB at 1 bit/pixel for common test images.

In storage systems with vast numbers of files, compression techniques should exploit of inter-file similarity, while allowing for near-atomic access to individual files. In differential compression, collections of files are compressed by identifying shared common strings. Therefore, some files are represented largely by references to strings in other files. In addition, a file in the collection can be (further) compressed by identifying common strings within the file itself. At the cost of decompression latency, but a possible gain in compression effectiveness, an LZ-style within-file compressor could resolve these references to other files. To quantify the compression gain, we experiment with a variety of file collections, from emails to source code, and test against multiple measures. If the LZ scheme honors the inter-file references, then there is only minimal improvement. If the LZ algorithm replaces inter-file references with intra-file references, then up to 3% compression improvement is witnessed for mildly similar files, and over 200% improvement for highly similar files.

Presented in this paper are experimental results for a parallel implementation of a fractal image compression algorithm. The fractal image compression process exhibits a natural parallelism and the specific parallel implementation is shown to be beneficial for the execution speed of the algorithm. Furthermore, computational speed has been enhanced through an algorithmic modification employing a quadtree recomposition approach in which quadtree subblocks are iteratively combined into larger ranges for fractal encoding. Furthermore, classification schemes which serve to reduce the O(n/sup 4/) algorithmic complexity are explored.
