Internet computing is facilitated by a remote execution methodology in which programs transfer to a destination for execution. Since the transfer time can substantially degrade the performance of remotely executed (mobile) programs, file compression is used to reduce the amount of data that is transferred. compression techniques however, must trade off compression ratio for decompression time, due to the algorithmic complexity of the former, since the latter is performed at run-time in this environment. In this paper, we define the total delay as the time for both the transfer and the decompression of a compressed file. To minimize the total delay, a mobile program should be compressed in the best format for minimizing the delay. Since both the transfer time and the decompression time are dependent upon the current underlying resource performance, selection of the "best" format varies and no one compression format minimizes the total delay for all resource performance characteristics. We present a system called Dynamic compression Format Selection (DCFS) for the automatic and dynamic selection of competitive compression formats based on the predicted values of future resource performance. Our results show that DCFS reduces the total delay imposed by the compressed transfer of Java archives (.jar files) by 52% on average for the networks, compression techniques and benchmarks studied.

The paper presents an original method of text transformation based on permutations with restrictions and elimination of repetitive letters within a word having the purpose of improving the performance of lossless compression algorithms, based on a new generated dictionary. The direct transformation algorithm and the reverse transformation algorithm are presented, as well as the impact on more compression techniques compared to other transforms used in text compression. This transformation has as purpose the performance improvement for existing text compression algorithms, including the use of neural networks. The main condition is that the transformation should be reversible for the text recovery after decompression.

To explore the three-base periodicity often found in protein-coding DNA regions, we introduce a DNA model based on three deterministic states, where each state implements a finite-context model. The results obtained show compression gains in relation to the single finite-context model counterpart. Additionally, and potentially more interesting than the compression gain on its own, is the observation that the entropy associated to each of the three states differs and that this variation is not the same among the organisms analyzed

We propose a view-dependent compression algorithm for 3D binary voxel models, based on the skeleton representation. An input model is first partitioned into several segments. The segmentation increases the number of skeleton points, requiring more bits than the original model. Therefore, we develop a remodeling algorithm, which reduces the number of skeleton points in each segment effectively without any loss of information. Each segment is then compressed with a context-based arithmetic coder. Before the transmission, the encoder is informed of the viewing parameters via feedback channel. Then, the encoder transmits visible segments in detail, while cutting off invisible segments. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm requires much less bitrate than the conventional skeleton-based algorithm, while exhibiting faithful image quality.

We demonstrate a novel location aware services framework termed COMA for efficient compression and map-matching of road-network graph data. Key innovations include working demonstration of a new compression algorithm to eliminate nodes and edges that do not affect graph connectivity while ensuring object location map-matching accuracy. The demonstration features: (1) Algorithm to leverage compressed versions of road-network graphs for map-matching of objects locations to correct road edges without decompression, (2) Upwards of 75% compression ratio implying significant savings for road network data transmission costs, a key constraint for internet of things (IOT) devices, and (3) Use of a new controllable parameter, termed conflict factor C, whereby location aware services can trade the compression efficiency with map-matching accuracy at varying granularity. In addition to above features the demonstration features an extensible framework that enables experimentation and comparison between various compression and map-matching algorithms in a rich interactive interface. In this paper we outline data management challenges for location aware services using various scenarios for compression of a real road-network map of a large region of United States, along with both real and synthetic moving object trajectories distributed over this map. We describe the COMA framework through its map-based Graphical User Interface, ability to select the area of interest from the road-network map, and submit a compression request. COMA can export and save the compact versions of the selected area in different formats and plot the compressed graph over the original map for visual inspection to study the differences between compressed and uncompressed versions and various related statistics.

The paper proposes a compression mechanism for multi-stage switching networks with multi-rate BPP (Binomial-Poisson-Pascal) traffic streams. The effectiveness of the proposed mechanism is compared to previously studied Call Admission Control (CAC) mechanisms for multi-rate switching networks, i.e. bandwidth reservation mechanism and threshold mechanism. The paper investigates by means of simulation method the influence of the CAC mechanisms on the key performance indicators of multi-service switching networks.

The increasing size and complexity of high performance computing (HPC) systems have led to major concerns over fault frequencies and the mechanisms necessary to tolerate these faults. Previous studies have shown that state-of-the-field checkpoint/restart mechanisms will not scale sufficiently for future generation systems. Therefore, optimizations that reduce checkpoint overheads are necessary to keep checkpoint/restart mechanisms effective. In this work, we demonstrate that checkpoint data compression is a feasible mechanism for reducing checkpoint commit latencies and storage overheads. Leveraging a simple model for checkpoint compression viability, we show: (1) checkpoint data compression is feasible for many types of scientific applications expected to run on extreme scale systems, (2) checkpoint compression viability scales with checkpoint size, (3) user-level versus system-level checkpoints bears little impact on checkpoint compression viability, and (4) checkpoint compression viability scales with application process count. Lastly, we describe the impact that checkpoint compression might have on future generation extreme scale systems.

Every day the amount of medical image generated grows rapidly so there is a need for efficient image compression for storing and managing the medical images. In this work, a suitable image codec is proposed for medical images. During the past few years, frequency domain analyzes such as Discrete Cosine Transform and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) have been widely used in the field of image compression due to their well localized property of its coefficients in both space and frequency domain. This research work also deals with image compression based on frequency domain transformation. As the medical images are vital for diagnosis, they require lossless compression to store them. However, the coefficients of DWT are real numbers; lossless compression cannot be achieved. The Lifting Wavelet Transform (LWT) is used in proposed system to overcome limitation of DWT.

Summary form only given. Conventional compression techniques exploit general redundancy features in data to compress them. For example, Huffman or Lempel-Ziv techniques compresses data by statistical modeling or string matching while the Burrows-Wheeler Transform simply sorts data by context to improve compressibility. On the other hand, data can often be compressed better by exploiting their specific features. For example, columns or fields in a database table tend to be sparse, but not rows. Techniques have been developed to either group related table columns or compute dependency among them to transform data and enhance compressibility. The Vcodex data transformation platform provides a framework to develop and use such data transforms. That is, it treats compression techniques as invertible data transforms that can be composed together for specific tasks. In this way, data transformation remains general and can include techniques for encryption and others.

Energy efficiency is a key parameter in the design of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Sensor nodes are generally operated by using batteries of limited capacity. To achieve energy efficiency, a reduction in radio communication is necessary. The communication unit consumes the major power in a wireless sensor node. Reduction in power consumption to make reliable wireless sensor networks, due to the exchange of data between sensor nodes can be attained with the help of data compression approach. A lossless data compression (LDC) approach is proposed to attain reliability in wireless sensor networks. compression schemes have advantages that they can allow dynamical adjustment for the change in source data statistics for performance maximization. The proposed algorithm requires less computational power and its effectiveness has been computed by compression of temperature and relative humidity data sets gathered by real WSNs. The compression ratio has been obtained up to 73.54% and 61.82% for temperature and relative humidity data sets.
