Fractal image compression turns out to be a powerful and competitive technology, which can be successively applied to a still image coding, especially at high compression rates. Unfortunately, a large amount of computation needed for the compression stage remains to be a serious obstacle in exploring this new perspective approach. Diversified attempts are made to improve the situation. In particular, theoretical investigations and experiments show that the problem-oriented use of invariant image parameters (image smoothness estimates) can serve the purpose.

Recently the performance of nonlinear transforms have been given a lot of attention to overcome the suboptimal n- terms approximation power of tensor product wavelet methods on higher dimensions. The suboptimal performance prevails when those transforms are used for a sparse representation of functions consisting of smoothly varying areas separated by smooth contours. This paper introduces a method creating normal meshes with nonsubdivision connectivity to approximate the nonsmoothness of such images efficiently. From a domain decomposition viewpoint, the method is a triangulation refinement method preserving contours. The so-called normal offset decomposition searches from the midpoint of the edges in the previous approximation along the normal direction until it pierces the surface that represents the image and adds the piercing points to the approximation. The transform is nonlinear as it depends on the actual image. In this paper, we propose a normal offset based compression algorithm for digital images. The discrete setting causes the transform to become redundant. We also propose a model to encode the obtained coefficients. We show rate distortion curves and compare the results with the JPEG2000 encoder.

DNA compression has been a subject of great interest since the availability of genomic databases. Although only two bits are sufficient to encode four bases of DNA ( namely A, G, T and C ), the massive size DNA sequences compels the need for efficient compression. General text compression methods do not make use of characteristics specific to DNA sequences. DNA specific compression algorithms usually take advantage of repeat sequences. DNA sequences with high repetition rates can be best compressed by dictionary-based compression algorithms. However segments of DNA that do not reappear in the sequence are compressed using different text compression scheme. In this paper, we propose an encoding scheme to compress non repeat regions of DNA sequences, based on dynamic programming approach. In order to test the efficiency of the method we incorporate the encoding scheme in a DNA-specific algorithm, DNAPack. The performance of this algorithm is compared with various DNA compression algorithms. The results show that our method achieve better results in many cases.

compression is a technique to reduce the quantity of data without excessively reducing the quality. The transmission and storing of compressed multimedia data is much faster and more efficient than original uncompressed data. There are various techniques and standards for multimedia data compression, especially for image compression. They are either lossless or lossy techniques. Arithmetic and Huffman coding are two of the widely used lossless compression techniques. Burrows Wheeler Transform(BWT) is a sorting technique which when used with the available compression algorithms can considerably increase the compression ratio. Here a hybrid compression model using BWT with Arithmetic Coding(AC) and Huffman Coding is analysed for image compression and improvement in overall compression is documented.

Electrocardiograms (ECG) display important information about the cardiac activity of the human heart. An early diagnosis can be significantly improved through long-term remote monitoring of the patient. This involves large quantities of data to be transmitted to a physician for interpretation. Therefore, reliable compression algorithms have to be developed. The performance of a compression method based on the Discrete Wavelet Transform has been tested using the Daubechies family of mother wavelets as a main parameter. Simulations have been performed on a significant number of ECG signals, the results being displayed for performance evaluation.

The following article is about the methods of sound data compression. The technological progress has facilitated the process of recording audio on different media such as CD-Audio. The development of audio data compression has significantly made our lives easier. In recent years, much has been achieved in the field of audio and speech compression. Many standards have been established. They are characterized by more better sound quality at lower bitrate. It allows to record the same CD-Audio formats using “lossy” or lossless compression algorithms in order to reduce the amount of data surface area at almost noticeable difference in the quality of the recording. In order to compare methods of sound data compression I have used Adobe Audition 3.0 software and computer program of the sound compression system from manufacturers' side. To illustrate the problem, I have used the graphs of the spectrum and musical composition spectrograms. The comparison has been done on the basis of uncompressed music track from the original CD-Audio.

Wireless sensor networks WSNs, are fastest growing ubiquitous networking used for monitoring and managing remote habitats. IEEE 802.15.4 standard was introduced for optimizing power consumption. For improving connectivity and enabling efficient data transfer with minimum modifications of the existing Internet stack, an adaptation layer, 6loWPAN, was introduced by IETF. This paper presents a novel header compression algorithm to combat with the reduction in the Maximum Transmission Unit of 6LoWPAN with respect to Internet. This improves the Quality of Service parameters such as throughput, delay and jitter variations. The size of fragmentation header is reduced by eliding the datagram_size field in in the in between fragments. the first and the last fragment and removing it This results in the reduction of fragment header size by 8 bytes, thereby yielding a reduction of 2.9ms in the transmission time for each IPv6 packet of nominal 1000 bytes payload. Contiki OS was used to record results to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

In this paper, we present the realization of Boolean function classification schemes on Altera FLEX10K FPGA device for lossless data compression. The compression algorithm is performed by incorporating Boolean function classification into Huffman coding. This allows for more efficient compression because the data has been categorized and simplified before the encoding is done. The design is followed by the timing analysts and circuit synthesis for the validation, functionality and performance of the designated circuit which supports the practicality, advantages and effectiveness of the proposed hardware realization for the applications. The average compression ratio is 25% to 37.5% from numerous testing with various text inputs with a maximum clock frequency of 27.9 MHz

Electromyography signals are used for biomedical applications and clinical diagnosis. This paper presents a system to acquire high quality EMG (electromyography) signal and compress it for high data transfer rate. For acquiring EMG signals we are using off-the-shelf integrated circuit AFE which generates 24 bit data stream output. After acquiring the signal from front end amplifier, the signal is processed (filtration, compression). This is achieved by making use of MSP430 MCU (micro controller). We are using AFE and MSP430 because it is less power consuming, reliable, and both are compatible with each other. The detail of the hardware and software is explained in the further section of the paper. This paper also describes the compression algorithm. compression is done so that whenever the data is send wirelessly using Bluetooth, Zigbee etc, it requires less bandwidth.

Reducing the number of transmitted bytes in a wireless sensor network reduces the time the radio is on, resulting in a significant increase in battery lifetime. Toward this end we have developed a compression technique that is independent of the protocols used in the network, acts as a transparent layer, and consumes minimal computing resources. Patterns in recent packets are identified and replaced in the transmitted packet by bit flags. This algorithm was tested on packet traces collected from commercial wireless sensor networks for 40-80% compression, yielding comparable energy savings in a time-synchronized network.
