Compound (or mixed) document images contain graphic or textual content along with pictures. They are a very common form of documents, found in magazines, brochures, web-sites etc. Because of the very distinct nature of those two image classes (text/graphics vs. pictures), their compression invariably involves multiple compression systems and a region segmentation (classification) method. We review state-of-the-art technologies on the subject while focusing our attention on the mixed raster content (MRC) multi-layer approach. We also present new results on segmentation for MRC based on optimized rate-distortion-based block thresholding.

The storage density of PCM has been demonstrated to double through the employment of Multi-Level Cell (MLC) PCM arrays. However, this increase in capacity comes at the expense of increased latency (both read and write) and decreased long-term endurance, as compared to the more conventional Single-Level Cell (SLC) PCM. These negative traits of MLCs detract from the potentially invaluable storage benefits. This paper introduces a compression-based hybrid MLC/SLC PCM management technique that aims to combine the performance edge of SLCs with the higher capacity of MLCs in a hybrid environment. Our trace-driven simulations with real application workloads demonstrate that the proposed technique achieves 3.6X performance enhancement and 72% energy reduction, on average, as compared with MLC-only configurations, while always providing the same effective capacity as the MLC-only mode.

Data reduction algorithms operating on GPS tracklogs are widely used in cartographic applications, because the raw dataset usually includes a huge redundancy and unneccessarily high volume of measurement points. The existing methods for compressing tracklogs are either too simplistic or intended to be used on powerful computers, whereas our research focuses on mobile environments where both memory and computational power are very limited. In this paper we are introducing a modified version of a well-known line generalization algorithm, which aims to reach the best trade-off between complexity and accuracy in embedded systems, mostly smartphones.

We present a method to compress digital ink based on piecewise-linear approximation within a given error threshold. The objective is to achieve good compression ratio with very fast execution. The method is especially effective on types of handwriting that have large portions with nearly linear parts, e.g. hand drawn geometric objects. We compare this method with an enhanced version of our earlier functional approximation method, finding the new technique to give slightly worse compression while performing significantly faster. This suggests the presented method can be used in applications where speed of processing is of higher priority than the compression ratio.

The 21st century is the century full of information. The data compression is an indispensable key technology in the information society. We use adaptive swinging door trending in the historical data compression of the heating data center. The experimental results show that the algorithm can compress the historical data faster, obtain a higher compression ratio, and ensure that the decompressed data has higher accuracy.

The compression algorithms reduce the redundancy in data representation to decrease the storage required for that data. Data compression offers an attractive approach to reducing communication costs by using available bandwidth effectively. There has been an unprecedented increase in the amount of digital data transmitted via networks especially through the Internet and mobile cellular networks, over the last decade. Digital data represent text, images, video, sound, computer programs, etc. With this trend expected to continue, it makes sense to pursue research on developing algorithms that can most effectively use available network bandwidth by maximally compressing data. A strategy called intelligent dictionary based encoding (IDBE) in conjunction with Burrows Wheeler Transform (BWT) is discussed to achieve this. It has been observed that a preprocessing of the text prior to conventional compression will improve the compression efficiency much better. The intelligent dictionary based encoding provides some level of confidentiality. The experimental results of this compression method are also analyzed.

We analyze the lossless compression for a large class of discrete complete and memoryless sources performed by a generalized Huffman with an alphabet consisting of M letters. Given the number of source messages, N, the alphabet size, M, and the number of code words, p, on each level in the graph, excepting the last two ones, we have determined the unknown encoding parameters, that is, the number n of the levels in the encoding graph, the number q of code words on the level n-1, the number k of groups of M nodes, and the remaining m nodes on the last level. The average code word length is also computed. Two extreme cases, when p=0 and p=M-1 have been analyzed.

We study the problem of scalable monitoring of operational 3G wireless networks. Threshold-based performance monitoring in large 3G networks is very challenging for two main factors: large network scale and dynamics in both time and spatial domains. A fine-grained threshold setting (e.g., perlocation hourly) incurs prohibitively high management complexity, while a single static threshold fails to capture the network dynamics, thus resulting in unacceptably poor alarm quality (up to 70% false/miss alarm rates). In this paper, we propose a scalable monitoring solution, called threshold-compression that can characterize the location- and time-specific threshold trend of each individual network element (NE) with minimal threshold setting. The main insight is to identify groups of NEs with similar threshold behaviors across location and time dimensions, forming spatial-temporal clusters to reduce the number of thresholds while maintaining acceptable alarm accuracy in a large-scale 3G network. Our evaluations based on the operational experience on a commercial 3G network have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed solution. We are able to reduce the threshold setting up to 90% with less than 10% false/miss alarms.

Information technology is growing very rapidly, in particular for data handling. Data is a valuable asset for everyone, especially for larger companies with branches in several places. Data transmission from headquarters to branch offices make the company must provide good tools to do it. These companies also need tools that can be used to compress data to reduce their size. The main idea of the word-based encoding is to extract each word of the source text, then it is checked whether containing capital letters or not. After that, it is checked if there is a symbol or number. The particle will be separated from the basic word using stemming algorithm. Symbols, numbers and affixes will be indexed in the basic dictionary. The basic word will also be checked whether it exists in the basic dictionary or not. If there is not a match, then the word will be stored in the supplement dictionary. The experiment was conducted on the text file with the size from about 10K bytes up to 500K bytes with 16-bits length codewords. The result shows that the compression ratio of the proposed method is comparable with the previous ones, while its processing time is much better than the Reversed Sequence of Characters on LZW method.

Modern application specific instruction set processors (ASIPs) have customizable caches, where the size, associativity and line size can all be customized to suit a particular application. To find the best cache size suited for a particular embedded system, the applications) is/are executed, traces obtained, and caches simulated. Typically, program trace files can range from a few megabytes to several gigabytes. Simulation of cache performance using large program trace files is a time consuming process. In this paper, a novel instruction cache simulation methodology that can operate directly on a compressed program trace file without the need for decompression is presented. This feature allowed our simulation methodology to have an average speed up of 9.67 times compared to the existing state of the art tool (Dinero IV cache simulator), for a range of applications from the Mediabench suite
