Efficient algorithms for compressing three-dimensional (3D) triangle meshes have been widely developed in recent years, but most of them are designed to deal with manifold meshes. A progressive geometry-driven 3D triangle meshes algorithm is proposed in this work which can be easily extended to non-manifold mesh compression and polygon mesh compression. Different from connectivity-driven algorithms; our method starts with the geometry; it encodes the geometry data into a symbol sequence consisting of only three kinds of symbols. Edge collapse and vertex unification operator are used to encode the connectivity, and the symbol sequences can be further encoded by arithmetic coding.

A multiscale geometric analysis method based on wavelet and uniform directional filter banks (WUDFB) is structured in order to overcome the insufficiencies of contourlet transform and wavelet-based contourlet transform which are used in compression. A novel WUDFB-based compression algorithm of hyperspectral imagery is proposed, in which intra-band WUDFB and inter-band prediction are used to remove the spatial and spectral redundancy respectively, and no-list set partitioned embedded block coder makes output embedded stream. The experimental results by using 64 band hyperspectral data show that the algorithm achieves higher peak signal-to-noise ratio at high compression ratio and preserves more detail information of original images than the algorithm based on wavelet transform.

A novel and simple quality controlled ECG compression algorithm is proposed using Wavelet energy based diagnostic distortion (WEDD) measure, which localizes the error between the original and the reconstructed signals in the feature space. The compression algorithm is based on Wavelet transform, energy based thresholding and an adaptive quantization scheme. The quality control criterion allows clinically acceptable reconstructions while maintaining high compression ratios. The advantage of the proposed algorithm is that the threshold value and the quantization bits are chosen automatically in few iterations so that the quality of the reconstructed signal is controlled.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals have both intra- and inter-beat correlations, which can be exploited for compression by arranging the ECG signals into appropriate two-dimensional (2-D) representations. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that maps 1-D ECG signals to 2-D arrays effectively and then compresses the 2-D arrays with efficient image compression algorithms. Compared to existing 2-D ECG compression methods, the proposed algorithm is unique in that it reveals much more intra- and inter-beat correlation characteristic of ECG signals. Therefore, the image compression algorithms can achieve enhanced performance. Furthermore, unlike existing 2-D ECG compression methods, the proposed algorithm works well for both regular and irregular ECG signals with extremely varying periods. In particular, its performance is insensitive to QRS miss detection cases.

Advanced blocs classification for fast encoding in fractal-based gray-scale images compression

Fractal-based images compression entails a computationally costly search for matching range and domain blocs. One way to remedy at this problem is to classify image blocs into categories and only search among domain blocs which are in the same category as the target range bloc. Since image blocs with a simple edge (blocs with a distinct edge running through them) are a very important portions of the perceptual information content in image, we propose in this paper a method to both identify and classify this kind of blocs according to their edge presentation. We refer to this method as forced classification (FC). This method is combined with other suitable methods of blocs classification available in the literature to allow a fast and efficient encoding of grey-scale images. The result is surprisingly good, the encoding time for 512/spl times/512 lena image is reduced by a factor of 37.52% than using only Yuval Fisher (1995) classification, while the loss of image quality is low.

The ability to change illumination is a crucial factor in image-based modeling and rendering. Image-based relighting offers such capability. However, the trade-off is the enormous increase of storage requirement. In this paper, we propose a compression scheme that effectively reduces the data volume while maintaining the real-time relighting capability. The proposed method is based on principal component analysis (PCA). A block-wise PCA is used to practically process the huge input data. The output of PCA is a set of eigenimages and the corresponding relighting coefficients. By dropping those low-energy eigenimages, the data size is drastically reduced. To further compress the data, eigenimages left are compressed using transform coding and quantization while the relighting coefficients are compressed using uniform quantization. We also suggest the suitable target bit rate for each phase of the compression method in order to preserve the visual quality. Finally, we propose real-time engine that relights images from the compressed data.

We introduce a compression algorithm using the wavelet transform. The principle of wavelet transform is to decompose hierarchically the input image into a series of successively lower resolution reference images and detail images that contain the information needed to be reconstructed back to the next higher resolution level. The histogram of image sub-bands provides information on the distribution of the coefficient values in this sub image. The sub band images resulting from wavelet transform are not equal significance. Some sub-bands contain more information than others. The total number of available bits describe an image is however, inevitably limited. Therefore, it is desirable to allocate more bits to those sub-band images and can be coded more accurately than others. The objective of such bit allocation method is to optimize the overall coder performance and minimize the quantization error. In determining which wavelet filter is to be used for image compression, some of the properties including vanishing moments are considered. The wavelet transform is implemented using a linear-phase biorthogonal filter (16,4) with 4 level of decomposition. For this study, we used a scalar quantization with uniform threshold quantizers. The quantization method is pulse code modulation (PCM) for the coefficients in all high-pass sub-bands. The coefficients of low-pass sub-band are differential PCM quantized per region.

This paper is associated with the choice of wavelet bases in electrocardiogram compression. The integer-to-integer wavelet transform in the algorithm, the zero-tree coding and the adaptive arithmetic coding in electrocardiogram is used. The wavelet library is composed of nine wavelets. The MIT-BIH arrhythmia database is used to test the algorithm. The experiment results show that it can significantly reduce the signal distortion by selecting optimal wavelet bases for each segment electrocardiogram in compression algorithm.

Summary form only given, as follows. Data compression algorithms have been widely used in many areas to meet the demand of storage and transfer of large size data. Most of the data compression algorithms regard the input as a sequence of binary numbers and represent the compressed data also as a binary sequence. However, in many areas such as programming languages (e.g. LISP and C) and compiler design, it is more desirable to have a compression algorithm which compresses a data structure while keeping a similar structure of the original data in the compressed form. In addition to reducing storage space, such compression also has the benefit of efficiently executing various operations (e.g. searching) in the compressed form. We study the problem of compressing a non-binary data structure (e.g. tree, undirected and directed graphs) in an efficient way while keeping a similar structure in the compressed form. To date, there has been no proven optimal algorithm for this problem. We use the idea of building LZW tree in LZW compression to compress a binary tree generated by a stationary ergodic source. The tree is parsed into subtrees using breadth first search and an optimal dictionary is constructed with each index pointing to a distinct subtree. We replace the parsed subtrees by dictionary indices to formed the compressed tree. We also extend our tree compression algorithm to compress undirected and directed acyclic graphs.
